Rosenthal’s Latest: Swisher, Nady, Kapler, Zaun

By Tim Dierkes | January 6, 2009 at 8:50am CDT

The latest from Ken Rosenthal.

  • A recent Ned Colletti-Scott Boras conversation about Manny Ramirez didn’t result in progress.  Boras still has his sights on at least $100MM over four years.  Rosenthal adds that Manny is "cool to the idea of playing in San Francisco."
  • Nick Swisher and Xavier Nady are drawing "significant interest."  Rosenthal speculates that the Giants, Braves, or Pirates would make sense.
  • The door is not closed with the Yankees and Andy Pettitte.  Pettitte recently rejected the Yanks’ one-year, $10MM offer.
  • Some Mets people prefer Oliver Perez to Derek Lowe.  The Braves have yet to speak to Boras about Lowe, while the Brewers and Phillies have financial concerns about fitting him in.
  • Trevor Hoffman has a West Coast preference (the Dodgers or maybe a Padres reconciliation) but interest with the Brewers is mutual.  Other relievers on the Dodgers’ radar: Juan Cruz, Guillermo Mota, and Dennys Reyes.
  • Brian Fuentes’ agent had serious talks with the Yankees, but no offer was made.  Fuentes would’ve been Mariano Rivera’s set-up man and perhaps taken over upon his retirement.
  • Rosenthal notes that MLB kicked in a small part of the $10MM owed to Sidney Ponson from their luxury tax pool, which is not uncommon.
  • If they can afford it, the Rays would like to sign Gabe Kapler.
  • The Orioles, Red Sox, and A’s are interested in Gregg Zaun.
  • Perhaps because of the cool market for his services, Orlando Cabrera is willing to play second base.  The Yankees did not have interest.
  • That Gavin Floyd for Brian Roberts rumor "seemingly arose from internal discussions among Orioles officials."

Twins Rumors: Kawakami, Lyon, Saito, Mota

By Tim Dierkes | January 5, 2009 at 5:02pm CDT

La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune has the latest hot stove info on the Twins.

  • The Twins don’t appear to be currently negotiating with Kenshin Kawakami – starting pitching isn’t top priority currently.  Neal says that could change if they need to package a starter in a trade.
  • Reliever names on the radar: Brandon Lyon, Takashi Saito, and Guillermo Mota.  Lyon may be out of their price range.

Rangers Seeking Turnbow and Others

By | December 31, 2008 at 7:51pm CDT

T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com fills us in on the Rangers’ ongoing search for bullpen help:

  • Derrick Turnbow is at the top of the list with pitching coach Mike Maddux leading the charge.  The two worked together a few years ago in Milwaukee.  The Marlins and Pirates are also thought to have interest.
  • The Rangers are also investigating closers Chad Cordero and Jason Isringhausen, both free agents.  As Sullivan points out, the Rangers like to target low-cost, high-reward relievers.  Some would call them reclamation projects.
  • Right-hander Guillermo Mota is also on the team’s list.  The 35-year-old had a 4.11 ERA for the Brewers last year.

Odds and Ends: Taveras, Kemp, Mota

By Tim Dierkes | July 10, 2008 at 10:39am CDT

Today’s random linkage.

  • Correction to the Justin Duchscherer post – he only has one more arbitration year, not two.  He’s set to reach free agency after the ’09 season.
  • Rob Neyer points us to a quality interview with Yankees beat writer Tyler Kepner over at NoMaas.org.
  • MLB.com’s Jim Molony says the Marlins have renewed interest in Rockies center fielder Willy Taveras.
  • LEN3 thinks the Twins need a reliever more than anything.
  • Dave Cameron wonders if Matt Kemp is overrated.
  • Craig Brown of Royals Authority examines the team’s trade candidates.
  • The Padres’ Paul DePodesta runs through his team’s top trade candidates as well as general considerations in trading.
  • The Dodgers are close to signing their first-round pick, Ethan Martin.
  • Oscar Villarreal refused the Astros’ assignment to the minors and may be released.  Also at this link, the Astros have an offer out to first round pick Jason Castro.
  • The Indians signed Bryan Bullington, the Pirates’ first overall pick in ’02.

Mets Acquire Estrada For Mota

By Tim Dierkes | November 21, 2007 at 9:28am CDT

UPDATE: Non-tendering Estrada is still an option for the Mets, but they’ve unloaded Mota’s contract.  The Mets may shop around for better options, knowing they have an adequate fallback.  According to Jamey Newberg, the Mets found the asking prices for trade targets Gerald Laird and Ramon Hernandez to be unacceptable.

The Mets found their catcher today in the person of Johnny Estrada.  To get him from the Brewers, Omar Minaya only had to surrender Guillermo Mota.

It was a swap of a couple of unwanted guys.  The Brewers would’ve non-tendered Estrada rather than pony up $4MM+ for him.  However they’ll probably plop down something close to that for Jason Kendall, who is superior to Estrada only in the intangibles department.  Doug Melvin offered Estrada to the Mets while naming six different players he’d accept in return.

Mota was actually decent in terms of his 2.6 K/BB ratio this year, but he was hittable and home run prone.  Maybe the Brewers can make something of him, though at $3.2MM it’s a slightly pricey gamble.  Mota of course brings more steroid stigma to Milwaukee’s pen, which already has Derrick Turnbow.

Some Mets’ Notes

By Tim Dierkes | December 7, 2006 at 9:51pm CDT

The Mets have resigned relief pitcher Guillermo Mota to a 2-year/$5MM contract, according to MLB.com.  Mota was acquired from the Indians back in August and went 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA in 18 games for the Mets in 2006. He’ll be in New York for his 34 and 35 year seasons.

The Mets also lost top catching prospect Jesus Flores in the Rule V Draft today to the Washington Nationals. Though Jesus was still in the St. Lucie (A-advanced), he was considered to be the heir to the backstop once Paul Lo Duca was ready to move on. Flores will now be forced to play in the same stadium where he broke his thumb in an exhibition game at the start of the 2005 season.

""We’re disappointed, because we like Jesus a lot, but we’ll see how the process plays out," said Mets director of Minor League operations Adam Wogan."

The Mets are also still slated to meet with Barry Zito soon.

Minor Trades and Rumors

By Tim Dierkes | August 20, 2006 at 9:19pm CDT

The Cubs unloaded Neifi Perez on the Tigers today, and it was no surprise Neifi got through waivers.  What team would want to be on the hook for $2.5MM for him next year?  Ditching Neifi at this point at least partially rights the wrong of signing him to an extension in the first place for Jim Hendry.  The Cubs’ "everything man" will be making outs atop of Detroit’s lineup now.  Even more impressive is that Hendry snagged a 22 year-old catching prospect, Chris Robinson, in the deal.

The Mets added righty reliever Guillermo Mota today.  Along with Oliver Perez, this is another project with plenty of upside.  Mota was one of the game’s top setup men a few years ago.

Tom Glavine’s got a possible blood clot, which could mean season or career-ending surgery. At least his life is not in danger.  The news first appeared on an ESPN message board from a man said to be Glavine’s brother-in-law.  Back when Glavine appeared healthy, the same source indicated that the southpaw would finish his career with the Braves, at any salary.

Reggie Sanders may have cleared waivers.  Who wants a 38 year-old right fielder with a .248/.304/.424 line?  Don’t forget the $5MM he’s owed next year.

From Yankees announcer Jim Kaat: the Rangers may be talking to the Orioles about Mark Teixeira.  Tex is from Maryland, for what it’s worth.

Plenty of buzz going around in various forms of media that the Red Sox may acquire reliever LaTroy Hawkins.  We’ll know soon enough.  The 33 year-old has, at least, kept the ball in the yard and exhibited good control with the Orioles this year.
