Free Agent Notes: Young, Rowand, Manny, Francisco

By Tim Dierkes | December 6, 2011 at 3:45pm CDT

Free agent notes I found lying around on Twitter…

  • Righty Chris Young should be ready for spring training following shoulder capsule surgery, his agent told MLB.com's Corey Brock.
  • Aaron Rowand is looking for a big league job, tweets Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.  The Phillies said no.
  • Manny Ramirez is calling teams directly in his search for employment, tweets Bob Klapisch.
  • Reliever Frank Francisco is likely to sign elsewhere in the wake of the Blue Jays acquiring Sergio Santos, GM Alex Anthopoulos told reporters today.
  • Infielder Miguel Tejada hopes for a Major League deal, tweets Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.
  • More than a dozen scouts are expected to watch Joel Zumaya throw next week, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney.  The Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, and Padres are among the team's that will be in attendance.
  • Sidney Ponson has no intention of pitching again, writes MASNSports.com's Roch Kubatko.  Currently, Ponson is contemplating whether to purchase a boat.  I say go for it, big guy!

Sidney Ponson Signs With Long Island Ducks

By Mike Axisa | March 16, 2010 at 2:30pm CDT

Righthander Sidney Ponson has signed with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League according to Mike Ashmore of The Hunterdon County Democrat (via Twitter).

The 33-year-old Ponson appeared in 14 games (9 starts) for the Royals last season, posting a 7.36 ERA and a 1.28 K/BB ratio in 58.2 innings. He became a free agent in August after Kansas City designated him for assignment, and this is the first time we've heard his name since.

Ponson hasn't been an effective big leaguer since 2003, when he tossed up a 3.75 ERA for the Orioles and Giants. Baltimore signed him to three year, $22.5MM contract after that season, and all they got in return was a 5.64 ERA in 346 innings and numerous off-the-field headaches.

Lew Ford, Preston Wilson, Carl Everett, Danny Graves, and Bill Pulsipher are among the former big leaguers to have donned a Ducks' uniform.

The Latest On The Remaining Free Agent Starters

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 12, 2010 at 9:52am CDT

There aren't many options for teams looking to sign a dependable starter, but the free agent market isn't completely barren yet. Of all the free agents remaining, only three pitchers logged more than 100 innings last year. Here's the latest on all eight starters to pitch as many as 40 innings last year (or what Roy Halladay logs in an average month):

  • Braden Looper, 194.2 IP – The Dodgers are interested on a minor league deal and the D'Backs aren't likely to pursue him, despite Brandon Webb's questionable status for Opening Day.
  • Jarrod Washburn, 176 IP – The Twins and Mariners seemed to lead the way for Washburn early on, but the Scott Boras client said yesterday that he doesn't expect to return to Seattle. The D'Backs don't appear likely to pursue Washburn and we haven't seen the Orioles connected to him for a month.
  • Mike Hampton, 112 IP - He will miss the 2010 season after undergoing rotator cuff surgery.
  • John Smoltz, 78 IP – Smoltz hasn't ruled out the Braves, but the Cardinals don't appear to have the money to sign him and the Nationals haven't spoken to him recently. Jon Heyman of SI.com says Smoltz is content to wait for the right deal, which may mean a mid-season signing.
  • Bartolo Colon, 62.1 IP -  The former Cy Young Award winner wants to pitch, but wasn't publicly linked to any teams this winter.
  • Sidney Ponson, 58.2 IP -  There has been no reported interest in Ponson this winter.
  • Adam Eaton, 49 IP - There has not been interest in Eaton, either.
  • Pedro Martinez 44.2 IP – The Phillies have been linked to Pedro throughout the offseason. Pedro may wait to sign in-season, as he did last year.

Like so many before them, the Royals have designated starter Sidney Ponson for assignment, says Bob Dutton at the Kansas City Star via Twitter. His departure will make room for the incoming Kyle Davies. Sir Sid put up a sparkling 7.36 ERA and 32/25 K/BB ratio in 58.2 innings for the Royals this season.

  • Former Blue Jays assistant GM Bart Given has a blog, and it's pretty good from what I've read (hat tip: Drunk Jays Fans).
  • Sidearmer Mark Worrell, acquired by the Padres for Khalil Greene, needs Tommy John surgery according to Bill Center of the San Diego Union Tribune.
  • Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune says the White Sox "traded infielder Sergio Santos to San Francisco for future considerations."  Santos was picked 27th overall by the D'Backs in the 2002 draft.
  • Chico Harlan of the Washington Post wonders whether $5MM first baseman Dmitri Young will be willing to accept an assignment to Triple A.
  • MLB.com's Alyson Footer says Astros GM Ed Wade never lied to her and doesn't owe her an apology about Ivan Rodriguez.  Wade just changed his mind after talking to Footer.
  • Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune doesn't see the Cubs releasing $4MM reliever Luis Vizcaino.
  • Tracy Ringolsby of Inside The Rockies believes Jeff Baker is the team's most likely infielder to be dealt.  ESPN's Jayson Stark mentioned Baker yesterday as a trade candidate, and the Denver Post's Troy E. Renck has wondered if he'd fit for the Yankees or Astros.
  • MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan says the Rangers have discussed Frank Catalanotto with other clubs but found no takers.  Catalanotto has $6MM coming to him.
  • Rany Jazayerli discusses the Royals' signing of Sidney Ponson and release of Jimmy Gobble.

Royals Sign Sidney Ponson

By Tim Dierkes | March 17, 2009 at 3:51pm CDT

According to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star, the Royals signed pitcher Sidney Ponson to a minor league deal.  Ponson, 32, posted a 5.04 ERA, 3.85 K/9, and 3.18 BB/9 in 135.6 innings for the Rangers and Yankees last year.  He did post a very strong 54.5% groundball rate.  The Rangers released Ponson in June due to "disrespectful and adverse reactions to situations unbecoming of teammates."
