The Brewers announced that outfielder Jay Gibbons has retired, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tweets. The 35-year-old last played in the Major Leagues with the 2010-11 Dodgers.

Gibbons appeared in 58 games for Milwaukee's Double-A and Triple-A affiliates this year, posting a .253/.345/.431 batting line. He retires with 127 career MLB home runs and a .260/.315/.453 batting line in nine seasons with the Orioles and Dodgers. Gibbons hit at least 20 homers in three of four seasons from 2002-05 and earned close to $16MM in his career, according to Baseball-Reference.

The Brewers signed outfielder Jay Gibbons to a minor league deal, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tweets. The Brewers, who had released Gibbons at the end of Spring Training, assigned him to Double-A Huntsville. Gibbons appeared in 24 games for the Dodgers last year, playing both corner outfield positions and posting a .255/.323/.345 line in 62 plate appearances. He has a .258/.318/.460 career line against right-handed pitching.

Brewers Notes: Greinke, Gibbons, Payroll

When Matt Cain signed his six-year, $127.5MM extension with the Giants, McCalvy "got the sense that just blew things up" in regards to the state of Zack Greinke's contract talks with the Brewers. Before Cain's deal, McCalvy thought Greinke would "absolutely" remain in Milwaukee, and while he isn't quite as certain now, there is still a chance Greinke re-signs with the Brewers even if he reaches free agency.
Jay Gibbons was released by the club during the final week of Spring Training. Gibbons, 35, signed a minor league deal with Milwaukee in February.
In the unlikely event that the Brewers are out of the NL Central race by July, McCalvy still doesn't think the Brewers will sell off such players as Greinke, Shaun Marcum or Francisco Rodriguez. The team is drawing more fans than ever to Miller Park and "it would be a very tough sell to those ticket holders if you start trading away your core players."
McCalvy says he could see the club "dial back a bit" on payroll in the coming years. The Brewers' relatively small TV market and cable TV contract will make it hard for the team to sustain its current payroll, which Cot's Baseball Contracts calculates at approximately $98.15MM for the 2012 season.

Gibbons appeared in 24 games for the Dodgers last year, playing both corner outfield positions and posting a .255/.323/.345 line in 62 plate appearances. He has a .258/.318/.460 career line against right-handed pitching.

22 Triple-A Players Elect Free Agency

A total of 22 players that finished the year in Triple-A elected free agency after the end of the regular season according to the transaction pages of the Pacific Coast and International Leagues. Outrighted To Triple-A: Todd, Gibbons, Kouzmanoff,

Here's where we'll keep track of all players who get outrighted to Triple-A today…

The Cardinals have outrighted Jess Todd to Triple-A, reports Rick Hummel of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Todd returned to the team that originally drafted him after being claimed off waivers last month.
Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times reports (on Twitter) that Jay Gibbons has accepted his outright assigment with the Dodgers and will report to their Triple-A affiliate.
The A's announced that they outrighted Kevin Kouzmanoff to Triple-A (Twitter link). Oakland initially demoted the third baseman on Monday and they outrighted him today to create a 40-man roster spot for Graham Godfrey.
Jake Fox cleared waivers and the Orioles outrighted him to Triple-A, according to Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com (Twitter link). Fox is expected to report to the minors this weekend, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun (on Twitter). Baltimore designated the utility player for assignment last week and were exploring possible trades, but rival teams, including the Pirates, weren't interested.

Outrighted To Triple-A: Gibbons, Castro, Vasquez

The Dodgers have outrighted both Jay Gibbons and Juan Castro to Triple-A, reports Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times (on Twitter). Both players were designated for assignment earlier this week, and Hernandez says it's unclear if either with elect free agency or accept the assignment.
The Dodgers have also outrighted Luis Vasquez, freeing up a 40-man roster spot for Trent Oeltjen according to Hernandez (Twitter links). Jerry Sands was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Dodgers Designate Gibbons, Castro For Assignment

The Dodgers announced that they designated Jay Gibbons and Juan Castro for assignment (Twitter link). In related moves, the Dodgers optioned Ivan DeJesus and John Ely to the minors, activated Juan Uribe, Blake Hawksworth and Marcus Thames from the disabled list and called up top prospect Dee Gordon.

Gibbons, 34, hit .255/.323/.345 with one home run in 62 plate appearances this year after signing a one-year, $650K deal with Los Angeles in the fall. In 2010 the nine-year veteran returned to the Major Leagues after a two-year absence and hit .280/.313/.507 in 80 plate appearances for the Dodgers.

Castro, 38, appeared in seven games for the Dodgers this year and collected four singles and a walk in his 15 plate appearances. The versatile infielder split the 2010 campaign between Los Angeles and Philadelphia, posting a .194/.237/.233 line in 140 plate appearances overall.

Boston was never inclined to non-tender Jonathan Papelbon had they signed Rivera; they valued him at the back of their bullpen in the short-term, and the draft picks that would come their way if he signs elsewhere as a free agent in the long-term.

Dodgers Sign Jay Gibbons

The Dodgers signed Jay Gibbons to a one-year major league deal worth $650K plus incentives, according to Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times (all Twitter links). $400K of that money is guaranteed, while Gibbons could earn up to $800K if he makes 500 plate appearances (Twitter links).

The 33-year-old earned a call up to the majors after hitting .347/.375/.594 in Triple-A this year. He followed that performance up with a .280/.313/.507 line in 80 big league plate appearances, so the Dodgers were expected to bring him back.

L.A. signed Gibbons to a minor league deal in January, though he hadn't appeared in the majors since 2007. The eight-year veteran has had success in the majors, as his 126 career homers indicate. Gibbons, a left-handed batter, has a career .783 OPS against right-handed pitching.
