Odds & Ends: Zimmerman, Devine, Wolf

By Tim Dierkes | April 22, 2009 at 11:30am CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • WEEI's Alex Speier points out that Ryan Zimmerman's deal mirrors the Kevin Youkilis extension, despite the difference in performance.  Tyler Hissey of Around The Majors likes the Zimmerman contract nonetheless.
  • Speier also reports that the Red Sox placed pitcher Devern Hansack on unconditional release waivers, not long after he dislocated his shoulder.  UPDATE: Hansack will be re-signed to a minor league deal.
  • Athletics reliever Joey Devine had Tommy John surgery, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
  • Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star talked to Royals GM Dayton Moore, who said the decision to recall Brian Bannister over Luke Hochevar was not financially motivated.
  • Randy Wolf doesn't have hard feelings toward the Astros, according to MLB.com's Michael Murphy.  The 'Stros wisely yanked their three-year, $28.5MM offer to Wolf in November.
  • Josh Levitt names the worst contract extensions in the game.

Odds & Ends: Colletti, Youkilis, Turnbow

By Tim Dierkes | March 31, 2009 at 11:40am CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Chat today, 2pm CST.
  • Rays info from Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times: they're trying to figure out a way to keep Jason Isringhausen, and they've released pitcher Chuck Tiffany (part of the Danys Baez trade in '06).
  • In talking to Ramona Shelburne of the L.A. Daily News, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti explained his success reading the market this offseason.  He also said, "I believe there will be some players available on July 31st that normally would never be available."
  • Ken Davidoff of Newsday reminds us of past trade discussions involving Kevin Youkilis, before he was highly regarded.
  • Baseball America's Jim Callis notes that the Cubs released "three of their top picks from the last six drafts this spring: outfielder Ryan Harvey, the sixth overall pick in 2003; righthander Grant Johnson, a second-rounder in 2004; and lefty Mark Pawelek, the 20th overall choice in 2005."
  • According to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, Rangers reliever Derrick Turnbow's opt-out date is Thursday.  He's talking to his agent about whether he should head to Triple A Oklahoma.
  • MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince says lefty reliever Juan Lara signed a minor league deal with the Indians – "just 16 months after a car accident nearly took his life."

Odds and Ends: Prospects, Alfonzo, Zimmerman

By Tim Dierkes | January 21, 2009 at 3:00pm CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • Cardinals GM John Mozeliak subjected himself to all kinds of questions from fans today in an online chat.  It sounds like he might do a little spring tinkering.
  • It seems that the Angels will go with internal options for the fifth starter job.
  • The Rangers, Rays, and A’s are atop Keith Law’s farm system rankings, with the Tigers, Nationals, and Astros bringing up the rear.
  • Orioles infielder Oscar Salazar is likely on the chopping block to make room for Gregg Zaun.
  • Kyodo News reports that Edgardo Alfonzo will try out for the Yomiuri Giants.
  • Dave Sheinin says Kevin Youkilis is a good comp for Ryan Zimmerman.  The midpoint between Zimmerman’s and the Nationals’ arbitration submissions would be a $3.325MM.
  • I sincerely appreciate all the submissions for the Saturday evening writer gig.  I’m happy to welcome D.J. Blatter aboard as our newest blogger.

Cafardo’s Latest: Varitek, Sheets, Glavine

By Nat Boyle | January 18, 2009 at 12:12pm CDT

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has a new article up in this Sunday’s paper:

  • Mariners advisers have suggested bringing in Jason Varitek to improve the Seattle pitching staff.
  • "Arbitration-strapped" Philadelphia may have interest in Ben Sheets as he becomes a bigger bargain by the day.
  • Cafardo details the Kevin Youkilis contract extension, to the dollar.
  • Kris Benson will work out for the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Rangers, and Cubs next Saturday.
  • Tom Glavine would entertain an offer from Washington.
  • If Atlanta takes on Andruw Jones, they would only have to take on $400K of the $21MM plus the Dodgers are paying him.

Red Sox To Sign Kevin Youkilis For Four Years

By Tim Dierkes | January 15, 2009 at 7:09pm CDT

7:09pm: According to Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald the contract’s worth at least $41.25MM. Youkilis gets a $1MM signing bonus, $6MM in 2009, $9MM in 2010 and $12MM in 2011 and 2012. After four years, the Red Sox have the option of buying Youkilis out for $1.25MM or paying him about $14MM to play another season.

5:25pm: Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe adds an important detail; the deal includes a club option for a fifth year at $13MM. It’s still unclear whether it includes any buyouts.

3:06pm: According to ESPN’s Peter Gammons, the Red Sox and Kevin Youkilis agreed to a four-year deal worth more than $40MM.  There’s also a fifth year option.  The deal buys out two arbitration years and two free agent years.  The Boston Globe’s Amalie Benjamin says the deal is close but not likely to be finished today.

Youkilis, 30 in March, hit .312/.390/.569 in 621 plate appearances in ’08 while playing above-average defense at first base.  He finished third in the AL MVP vote.  Youkilis’ teammate Dustin Pedroia received $34MM for the same slice of his career ($40.5MM in total).

Red Sox Next Moves

By Ben Jones | December 25, 2008 at 8:30am CDT

After missing out on Mark Teixeira, Boston Red Sox fans have been asking what the team will do to respond. Here are a few links about the current (and therefore future) state of the franchise.

  • Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald goes through the health of designated hitter David Ortiz and third baseman Mike Lowell, and he looks at pitching and the open slot behind the plate.

  • In this article, McAdam takes a look at the free agent market with the goal of determining who would work well with the Red Sox. Overall, McAdam writes that the homegrown talent has reduced the pressure the Red Sox have on the market. Because of this, McAdam believes the Red Sox view free agency as “unnecessarily expensive.”

  • Adam Kilgore of the Boston Globe expands on what we learned yesterday about first baseman Kevin Youkilis’ contract: A one-year deal stands.

  • Scott Erickson’s wife talks about his comeback bid.
  • The Red Sox have had "early-stage conversations" about an extension for Kevin Youkilis.

  • Roch Kubatko suggests the Orioles should try to acquire Ryan Garko.
  • Curt Schilling weighs in on Mark Teixeira’s options.
  • Dayton Moore still doesn’t sound willing to trade Zack Greinke.
  • Peter Schmuck and Craig Calcaterra discuss the Sidney Ponson case, which could have a significant impact on the game.

Red Sox Rumors: Sabathia, Youkilis, Tazawa

By Tim Dierkes | December 5, 2008 at 10:19am CDT

Red Sox rumors and links abound this morning.

  • ESPN’s Buster Olney says the Red Sox will meet with C.C. Sabathia within the next few days.  It’s unknown whether they have serious interest.
  • Olney adds that the Sox hope to sign Kevin Youkilis and Jon Lester long-term, in the wake of the Dustin Pedroia deal.  Peter Gammons suggested a deal for Youkilis could get done quickly.
  • Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe says GM Theo Epstein has prioritized catching.  Epstein suggested more catchers may be available in trade than people think.
  • Benjamin says the Red Sox also want to add a right-handed hitting outfielder who can play center (such as Rocco Baldelli) and a corner infielder.  Trade talks with the Tigers for Julio Lugo have broken down.
  • Epstein indicated to Benjamin that certain free agent pitchers will "dominate for years to come," and that’s the type he’s interested in.  He also said an eight-to-ten year deal for a free agent is unlikely, but Benjamin says not to rule out Mark Teixeira.
  • Epstein said at a press conference yesterday that the team’s Junichi Tazawa signing was made possible in part by the Daisuke Matsuzaka signing a few years back.  Dice-K and Hideki Okajima could be reasons Tazawa turned down more money from the Rangers.  Tazawa may begin his career in Double A.
  • The Boston Herald’s Sean McAdam looks at the controversy caused by the Tazawa deal.

Red Sox Sign Pedroia To Extension

By Tim Dierkes | December 3, 2008 at 5:58pm CDT

5:57pm: MLB.com’s Ian Browne wonders if the Pedroia signing is the first of several.  Will the Sox be able to hammer out extensions with Jon Lester, Kevin Youkilis, and Jonathan Papelbon this winter?

11:33am: Tony Massarotti has the contract breakdown.

11:18am: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox signed second baseman Dustin Pedroia to a six-year deal worth about $40.5MM.  ESPN’s Peter Gammons was right on this scoop as well.  The deal buys out two years of free agency and also has a club option for 2015.

Rosenthal cites the deals signed by Hanley Ramirez, David Wright, and Ryan Braun as comparables.  Pedroia’s deal covers one pre-arbitration season, all three arb seasons, and two years of free agency.  Ramirez received $54.4MM for the same slice of his career, Wright got $55MM, and Braun received $43.8MM.  Also, Brian McCann gets $37.8MM, Grady Sizemore gets $30.95MM, Evan Longoria is at $31.95MM, Robinson Cano gets  $42.49MM, and Chase Utley gets $55.5MM.  That assumes options are exercised, where applicable.
