Kyle McCann

Kyle McCann, Art Warren Sign With Mexican League Teams

By Steve Adams | May 13, 2025 at 9:33am CDT

Former A’s catcher Kyle McCann signed with los Piratas de Campeche in the Mexican League over the weekend, the team announced. He’s not the only former big leaguer headed to Mexico this week. MLBTR has learned that former Reds and Mariners reliever Art Warren is signing with los Tecos de los Dos Laredos. McCann is represented by the Ballengee Group. Warren is a client of Gaeta Sports Management.

McCann, 27, made his big league debut last year and got into 54 games with Oakland. He posted a .236/.318/.371 slash in 157 plate appearances, smacking five homers and six doubles along the way. The former fourth-rounder drew walks at a strong 10.2% clip but was also set down on strikes in an ugly 37.6% of his plate appearances. The year prior, McCann posted a .270/.351/.474 line in Triple-A Las Vegas, but in that ultra-hitter-friendly setting, that seemingly strong slash line actually checked in 11% worse than league average by measure of wRC+ (89).

Defensively, McCann had some issues. His 19% caught-stealing rate was worse than the 21.9% league average, and he posted well below-average framing marks in his 324 innings behind the plate. Statcast credited him with average numbers in terms of blocking balls in the dirt. McCann didn’t play any first base in the majors, but he’s played more than 800 minor league innings there and Baseball America called him an average defender at the position back in their 2021 scouting report.

Warren, 32, posted strong numbers in his first two big league looks with the 2019 Mariners and 2021 Reds. In 26 1/3 innings between those two teams, he notched a sparkling 1.03 earned run average with a massive 37.9% strikeout rate against a 9.7% walk rate. He looked set for a nice run in the Reds’ bullpen after that 2021 showing, but his 2022 follow-up was wrecked by injury.

Warren logged 36 innings for the ’22 Reds but was rocked for a 6.50 ERA. His four-seam fastball, which had averaged 95.2 mph in 2021, saw a sharp drop to a 93.5 mph average. The right-hander’s eye-popping 19.2% swinging-strike rate plummeted to 12.1%, resulting in a deflated 24.2% strikeout rate. His command also eroded, evidenced by a 13.3% walk rate.

The Reds placed Warren on the injured list with a flexor strain that July. He returned six weeks later, struggled for about a month, and was optioned to Triple-A Louisville. That option was quickly rescinded when elbow damage was discovered, and Warren was instead placed on the major league injured list. Two weeks later, the team announced that Warren had undergone a UCL procedure that would wipe out the rest of his 2022 campaign and his entire 2023 season.

Warren was non-tendered and eventually signed a minor league deal with the Yankees once he was healthy. He struggled immensely with their Triple-A squad last year in his return from surgery. In 26 2/3 frames, he served up 26 runs (8.78 ERA) on 36 hits and 22 walks. Eight of those hits were long balls. Warren still punched out 29 batters in his 26 2/3 innings of work, but with the barrage of walks, that only came out to a 21.2% strikeout rate (against a 16% walk rate). His average fastball in Triple-A sat at the same 93.5 mph average he showed in 2022 before undergoing his UCL repair.

The hope for both McCann and Warren is surely to parlay solid play in Mexico into a return to affiliated ball on a minor league deal. McCann has actually already suited up for three games — two at catcher, one as a DH — and gone 3-for-11 with a pair of doubles but also seven strikeouts. Warren’s new club, los Tecos, has been picked over by MLB teams in recent weeks. They’ve seen Cory Abbott (Rangers), Beau Burrows (Pirates), Nick Margevicius (Tigers), Sean Poppen (Angels) and Andrew Vasquez (Angels) all sign minor league deals with affiliated clubs.

Athletics Outright Kyle McCann, Anthony Maldonado

By Darragh McDonald | February 6, 2025 at 10:39am CDT

The Athletics have sent catcher Kyle McCann and right-hander Anthony Maldonado outright to Triple-A, according to each player’s transaction log at MLB.com. That indicates both players cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week. Both will stay with the organization as non-roster depth and could be in big league camp as non-roster invitees.

McCann, 27, made his major league debut last year. He has generally been a high-power, high-strikeout guy in his minor league career and he carried that up to the big leagues. In his 157 plate appearances, he struck out 59 times, a huge 37.9% rate. But he also popped five home runs and walked at a solid 10.2% clip, allowing him to post a .236/.318/.371 slash line and 102 wRC+. Defensively, each of FanGraphs, Baseball Prospectus and Statcast graded him as a subpar framer.

Those offensive numbers hewed fairly close to his minor league numbers, as he slashed .251/.344/.458 for a 99 wRC+ over 2022 and 2023. He struck out 32.9% of the time but drew walks in 11.1% of his plate appearances and hit 38 homers in 846 trips to the plate.

The A’s have Shea Langeliers as their primary catcher and acquired Jhonny Pereda to serve as the backup, nudging McCann off the roster. That gave other clubs a chance to grab McCann but none of them took that chance. Since McCann has less than three years of service time and this is his first career outright, he doesn’t have the right to elect free agency.

The A’s only have the two backstops on their 40-man in Langeliers and Pereda, so they’re surely glad to keep McCann around as depth without needing to use a roster spot for now. He could be the first one up if either of the two rostered backstops suffers an injury.

Maldonado, 27, was just claimed by the A’s in November. He made his major league debut with the Marlins last year, allowing 12 earned runs in 19 innings with a tepid 13.4% strikeout rate. The minor league track record is larger and more impressive. Over the past four years, he tossed 188 innings on the farm with a 3.26 earned run average, 32.4% strikeout rate and 9% walk rate.

Like McCann, this is his first career outright and he has less than three years of major league service time. That means he’ll have to accept this outright assignment, giving the A’s a depth arm for their bullpen without taking up a spot on the roster.

Athletics Acquire Jhonny Pereda, Designate Kyle McCann

By Anthony Franco | January 30, 2025 at 6:48pm CDT

The Athletics announced the acquisition of catcher Jhonny Pereda from the Marlins in exchange for cash considerations. Miami had designated the 28-year-old for assignment on Tuesday as the corresponding move for the Connor Gillispie waiver claim. The A’s designated catcher Kyle McCann for assignment to open a 40-man roster spot.

Pereda has played professionally for 11 seasons. He earned his long-awaited major league call last spring. Pereda held his spot on Miami’s 40-man roster all year, though he spent the majority of the season on optional assignment to Triple-A Jacksonville. He made 20 major league appearances, hitting .231/.250/.231 across 40 trips to the plate. The right-handed hitter ran a more impressive .297/.405/.424 slash over 195 plate appearances with Jacksonville.

Over parts of four Triple-A seasons, Pereda carries a strong .293/.385/.408 batting line in nearly 800 plate appearances. He spent time in the Cubs, Red Sox, Giants and Reds organizations before getting his major league look in Miami. Pereda joins Shea Langeliers as the only catchers on the 40-man roster. That makes him the favorite for the backup job right now, though it’s possible the A’s look for a more experienced veteran in the coming weeks. Tyler Soderstrom came up as a catcher but only spent four MLB innings behind the plate last season. He’s probably ticketed for everyday run at first base. Pereda still has a couple minor league options and could go back to Triple-A if the A’s add another catcher.

McCann was the A’s fourth-round pick in 2019. The Georgia Tech product made his big league debut last year. He got into 54 games and slashed .236/.318/.371 through 157 plate appearances. McCann had also fared well at Triple-A Las Vegas two seasons ago. He connected on 17 homers with a .270/.351/.474 batting line over 388 plate appearances, albeit in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

The lefty-swinging McCann has had a solid offensive reputation dating back his time in college. He has hit for power and taken plenty of walks during his minor league career, though he also strikes out much too often. He fanned at a 37.6% clip during his MLB time and struck out in 32.2% of his plate appearances with Las Vegas. Scouting reports have long questioned his receiving skills. Statcast indeed graded him as a below-average pitch framer for his 324 major league innings. He posted slightly below-average pop times and ran a middling 19% caught stealing rate.

The A’s will trade McCann or place him on waivers within the next few days. His offensive promise could get him a look from another club that is willing to live with some of the defensive tradeoffs. McCann still has a full slate of options and could be freely sent to Triple-A if a team is willing to carry him on the 40-man roster.

Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase first reported that the A’s were acquiring Pereda.

Athletics Select Kyle McCann

By Darragh McDonald | March 28, 2024 at 12:15pm CDT

The Athletics announced a series of Opening Day roster moves today. They selected the contract of catcher Kyle McCann and placed left-hander Sean Newcomb and infielder Aledmys Diaz on the 60-day injured list. Those two IL placements open spots for McCann and for lefty T.J. McFarland, who was acquired from the Dodgers earlier this week. Pitchers Scott Alexander, Luis Medina and Freddy Tarnok were placed on the 15-day IL while outfielder Miguel Andújar was placed on the 10-day IL.

McCann, 26, cracks a big league roster for the first time. A fourth-round pick from the 2019 draft, he was considered one of the club’s top 30 prospects in 2020 and 2021 but fell off after he struggled mightily in first taste of Double-A. He played 93 games there in 2021 but hit just .166/.283/.275, striking out in 37.1% of his plate appearances.

Since then, the strikeout problems have lingered but things have gone a bit better when he does put the bat on the ball. He split 2022 between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting 20 home runs that year while slashing .234/.338/.444. He struck out at 33.4% clip but also drew walks 12.2% of the time and his overall performance translated to a 100 wRC+, exactly average.

Last year, he struck out in 32.2% of his appearances, all at Triple-A, but hit 17 homers and slashed .270/.351/.474 for a wRC+ of 97. In this year’s Spring Training, he was punched out in 40.6% of his 32 plate appearances but also drew walks 15.6% of the time and hit two dingers for a .231/.375/.500 batting line.

Prior to this move, the A’s only had two catchers on their 40-man roster in Shea Langeliers and Tyler Soderstrom. The latter was optioned to Triple-A a couple of weeks ago, with the club seemingly preferring for him to have regular playing time as opposed to sitting on the bench as the backup to Langeliers. McCann will get to join the big league club and will be making his debut as soon as he gets into a game.

Newcomb has been battling soreness in his surgically-repaired left knee and it seemed the A’s don’t expect him to be able to return between now and late May. The same goes for Díaz, who has dealt with both a groin strain and a calf strain this spring.
