Brewers Acquire Rob Zastryzny From Yankees

Left-hander Rob Zastryzny has been traded from the Yankees to the Brewers, according to announcements from both clubs. Andrew Wagner of Freeman Sports was among those to notice earlier that Zastryzny was in the Brewer clubhouse. The Yanks, who signed the southpaw to a minor league deal, receive cash considerations in return. The Brewers have selected the lefty to their roster and optioned righty Elvis Peguero as the corresponding move. Milwaukee already had an open 40-man spot via Vinny Capra being designated for assignment recently.

As mentioned, Zastryzny signed a minor league deal with the Yankees in the winter. He has been at the Triple-A level so far this year with mediocre surface-level results but better numbers under the hood. Through 12 innings, he has a 23.5% strikeout rate, 50% ground ball rate and no walks. Though he has a 4.50 earned run average, thanks to a .378 batting average on balls in play and 60.6% strand rate.

The Brewers are already familiar with Zastryzny, as he pitched for them last year. He signed a minor league deal with Milwaukee ahead of the 2024 campaign and was called up in the summer. However, he only got to make nine appearances before some left elbow tendinitis put him on the injured list in late July. He stayed on the IL through the end of the year and was put on waivers in November, with the Cubs claiming him. He later cleared waivers in February and elected free agency, which led to his deal with the Yankees.

Zastryzny has pitched in six separate MLB seasons but has just 67 innings under his belt. In that time, he has a 4.30 ERA, 18.2% strikeout rate, 10.5% walk rate and 44.8% ground ball rate. His minor league numbers have generally been better. From 2021 to the present, he has thrown 143 2/3 innings on the farm with a 3.57 ERA, 29.1% strikeout rate and 7.6% walk rate.

He finished last year hurt but appears to be healthy now. Perhaps he had some sort of opt-out or upward mobility clause in his contract, with the Brewers more willing to give him a roster spot than the Yankees.

Yankees Sign Rob Zastryzny To Minor League Deal

The Yankees announced Monday morning that they’ve signed left-handed reliever Rob Zastryzny to a minor league deal and invited him to join their major league camp. Zastryzny was designated for assignment by the Cubs last week and outrighted after he went unclaimed on waivers. However, the veteran southpaw had the right to reject that assignment in favor of free agency. The Cubs never formally announced that he did so, but this morning’s announcement from the Yankees makes it clear that’s how things played out.

Zastryzny, 32, has pitched in parts of six big league seasons and tallied nearly two full years of MLB service. He tossed 7 2/3 innings with the 2024 Brewers and allowed only one run four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. He’s also seen big league time with the Cubs, Mets, Angels and Pirates, combining for a 4.30 earned run average in 67 innings.

Zastryzny has fanned 18.2% of his opponents against a 10.5% walk rate. His 44.8% ground-ball rate is only a couple ticks better than average, but he’s excelled when it comes to keeping the ball in the yard, limiting opponents to an average of just 0.40 homers per nine frames. Lefties have been particularly inept against him, batting just .189/.319/.232 in 113 plate appearances. Conversely, righties have torched the 6’3″ southpaw at a .311/.372/.447 clip. Zastryzny posted a 3.03 ERA in Triple-A last season and carries a career 4.69 mark in parts of eight seasons at that level (409 innings).

The Yankees’ only left-hander in the bullpen at the moment is Tim Hill, who re-signed in the Bronx on a one-year deal earlier this month. Zastryzny joins fellow veteran Tyler Matzek as a seasoned non-roster invitee in camp. He’ll compete for a spot alongside Hill in the ’pen, though there are enough notable unsigned veterans that it’s possible the Yankees could still bring someone in on a guaranteed deal.

Cubs Outright Rob Zastryzny

Cubs reliever Rob Zastryzny cleared waivers and was outrighted off the 40-man roster, according to the MLB.com transaction log. The southpaw has the right to elect free agency, as he has been outrighted multiple times in his career.

Chicago squeezed Zastryzny off their roster when they acquired Ryan Brasier last week. They had claimed the southpaw off waivers from the Brewers in the first week of the offseason. The Missouri product returned to his original organization. Chicago drafted Zastryzny in the second round in 2013. He tossed 16 innings for their 2016 World Series team as a rookie. Zastryzny remained with the Cubs through 2018, when they outrighted him.

He bounced around between a few organizations and spent time in the independent ranks. He returned to the big leagues with a brief stint for the Mets in 2022. The southpaw suited up for the Angels later that season and threw a career-high 20 2/3 frames with the Pirates in ’23. He spent last year with the Brewers, making nine MLB appearances and working 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball.

Between five teams, Zastryzny has thrown 67 innings with a 4.30 earned run average in his MLB career. He had a nice year with Milwaukee’s top affiliate in Nashville last year. Zastrynzny managed a 3.03 ERA with an excellent 32.5% strikeout rate across 29 2/3 frames. That intrigued the Cubs enough that they brought him back on waivers, though he had an uphill battle sticking on the roster.

That’s largely because he has exhausted his minor league options. Chicago couldn’t send him to Triple-A without putting him on waivers. The Cubs don’t have a ton of flexibility in a bullpen without many pitchers who can be optioned. If Zastryzny elects free agency, he’ll likely be limited to minor league offers elsewhere.

The Cubs announced that they’ve designated lefty reliever Rob Zastryzny for assignment. Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reported the move just before the official announcement. That’s the corresponding move for the Ryan Brasier trade, which is official.

Cubs Claim Rob Zastryzny, Designate Jimmy Herget

The Cubs announced that left-hander Rob Zastryzny has been claimed off waivers from the Brewers. Righty Jimmy Herget was designated for assignment in a corresponding move, and Chicago also outrighted four other players off their 40-man roster: catcher Christian Bethancourt, and right-handers Yency Almonte, Enoli Paredes, and Colten Brewer.  All four players elected free agency after clearing waivers.

Zastryzny, 32, spent the first three seasons of his career with the Cubs. He was a second-round pick by Chicago back in 2013 but has since bounced around the league, spending big league time with the Mets, Angels, Pirates and Brewers since departing the Cubs following the 2018 season. He’s also had minor league stints in the Dodgers and Marlins organizations. In 2024, Zastryzny yielded just one run in 7 2/3 MLB frames as a Brewer, nicely complementing a 3.03 ERA and 32.5% strikeout rate in 29 1/3 Triple-A frames. He has another five seasons of club control remaining, but as a depth claim, there’s no guarantee he’ll last the offseason on the 40-man roster.

Herget, 31, spent the bulk of the season with the Braves after a two-year stint in the Angels organization. The Cubs claimed him off waivers in mid-September but didn’t use him in the big leagues. He logged 12 1/3 innings with Atlanta and notched a 4.38 ERA (six runs) with a 15-to-3 K/BB ratio. In 155 big league innings, Herget carries a 3.54 ERA with a slightly below-average 22.2% strikeout rate and a sharp 7.4% walk rate.

Herget is out of minor league options, so any team that places a claim would need to carry Herget on the big league roster to begin next season. If he clears waivers, he’ll become a free agent and likely seek a minor league contract in free agency. He’s arbitration-eligible for the first time but comes with just a $900K projected salary, per MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz.

Of the outrighted players, each of Almonte, Bethancourt and Brewer were also arb-eligible. Swartz projected the trio for respective salaries of $2.2MM, $2.5MM and $800K, respectively. Almonte came to the Cubs alongside Michael Busch in last offseason’s trade with the Dodgers, but a shoulder strain limited him to 15 2/3 innings. Bethancourt is a rocket-armed, journeyman catcher who provided little with the bat at a position where the Cubs are seeking offensive upgrades. Brewer has been with four organizations over the past three seasons but posted a 5.66 ERA in 20 2/3 innings with the Cubs this season.

Paredes, 29, posted a 1.66 ERA in 21 1/3 innings between the Brewers and Cubs (just one scoreless inning for the latter team). However, he did so with a middling 18.4% strikeout rate and worrying 11.5% walk rate — all while also showing a heater that averaged 93.9 mph, which is nearly two miles per hour slower than the 95.7 mph he displayed in his 2020 debut. Paredes thrived in part due to a tiny .220 average on balls in play and a bloated 84% strand rate. Like Herget, he’s out of minor league options.

Assuming Herget clears waivers, all five players jettisoned from Chicago’s 40-man roster today appear ticketed for minor league deals on the open market.

Brewers Activate Enoli Paredes From 60-Day IL

The Brewers reinstated reliever Enoli Paredes from the 60-day injured list. He rejoins the bullpen for tonight’s game in San Francisco. Milwaukee optioned Elvis Peguero to Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move. To open a 40-man roster spot, the Brewers transferred southpaw Rob Zastryzny to the 60-day IL.

Paredes has been down since early July on account of forearm inflammation. Milwaukee moved the righty to the 60-day IL when they activated DL Hall last month. Paredes, who signed a minor league deal last November, has gotten good results in 14 appearances since the Brewers selected his contract in May. He’s allowed just two runs through 16 2/3 innings, although his 12:8 strikeout-to-walk ratio isn’t particularly encouraging.

That’s broadly in line with Paredes’ career work. He pitched with the Astros between 2020-22 and managed a decent 3.90 earned run average despite huge walk tallies. Paredes has been utterly dominant in Triple-A this season, striking out nearly 40% of opponents with a 1.73 ERA in 26 innings. He’s out of options, so the Brewers can’t send him back to Nashville without running him through waivers.

Zastryzny has been out since July 25 with elbow tendinitis. The injury cropped back up when he tried to start a rehab assignment last month. Today’s transfer officially rules Zastryzny out until the final week of the regular season. It’s not clear if he’ll be healthy enough to return this year. Working mostly as an opener, the lefty has logged 7 2/3 frames of one-run ball since Milwaukee called him up at the end of June.

Brewers Place Jared Koenig On 15-Day IL, Designate Chris Roller

The Brewers announced a trio of moves today, including Jared Koenig’s placement on the 15-day injured list due to left forearm tendinitis.  Milwaukee has selected the contract of left-hander Rob Zastryzny from Triple-A to take Koenig’s spot on the active roster, and to create a 40-man roster spot, outfielder Chris Roller was designated for assignment.

With a 1.66 ERA over 38 innings this season, Koenig is the latest in a long string of unheralded pitchers to suddenly emerge as key members of Milwaukee’s bullpen.  After spending much of his career in independent leagues and the Australian Baseball League, Koenig didn’t even make his debut in affiliated baseball until he pitched for the Athletics’ Double-A affiliate in 2021, and he made his MLB debut in the form of 39 1/3 innings of 5.72 ERA ball with Oakland in 2022.  He then spent 2023 with the Padres’ Triple-A squad before being released, and he signed a minors deal with the Brewers last November.

Milwaukee selected Koenig’s minors deal to the big league roster in mid-April, and while he was optioned a couple of times, the southpaw has remained on the 26-man since the start of May since he was simply pitching too well to demote.  Koenig’s 89.7% strand rate and .238 BABIP are doing a lot of the heavy lifting on that ERA, but his 3.42 SIERA is still more than respectable, and generated by a 49.5% grounder rate and above-average strikeout and walk numbers.  Koenig’s sinker has a modest 94.5mph average velocity, but it quickly become a devastating pitch that has limited hitters to a .276 wOBA this season.

The 30-year-old’s breakout year has now unfortunately been halted by this injury, which Koenig told reporters (including Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) has been an issue “for the last few weeks.”  He’ll receive an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of any damage, though Koenig’s feeling is that the team’s medical staff “are not overly concerned” for now.

With Koenig sidelined, the Brewers will replace him with another left-hander signed to a minors deal in the offseason.  Zastryzny is a veteran of five MLB seasons, pitching with the Cubs from 2016-18 and then with the Mets, Angels, and Pirates in 2022-23, as those two stints were sandwiched around a three-year gap of time in the minors and the canceled 2020 minor league seasons.  Zastryzny has a 4.70 ERA over 59 1/3 innings and 45 total appearances in the Show, including his 4.79 ERA in 20 2/3 innings with Pittsburgh last season.

The numbers have been better at the Triple-A level for Zastryzny over the last few seasons, with a particular spike upward in his time with the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate — a 3.18 ERA, 34.2% strikeout rate, and 7.2% walk rate in 28 1/3 innings in Nashville.  It will be interesting to see if this production can carry over to the majors and whether or not the Brewers might’ve revived another pitcher, as Zastryzny joins Bryan Hudson and Hoby Milner as the left-handed options in Milwaukee’s bullpen.

The 27-year Roller was a 30th-round pick for the Dodgers in the 2017 draft, and his long road in the minors finally resulted in a cup of coffee in the Show this season.  Roller appeared in a single game for the Brewers, pinch-hitting and playing three innings as a defensive sub in center field in Milwaukee’s 10-2 win over the Pirates on May 15, before being optioned back to Triple-A a few days later.

Roller has been in the Brewers’ organization since Milwaukee acquired him in a trade with the Guardians last August.  The 27-year-old’s Triple-A performance has been pretty respectable over his career, though it has been dragged down by a .201/.238/.321 slash line in 168 PA with Nashville this season.  It was enough for the Brewers to decide make Roller the odd man out of the roster mix, so he’ll now be exposed to the DFA wire before Milwaukee can potentially outright him off the 40-man.

Brewers Sign Rob Zastryzny To Minor League Deal

The Brewers signed left-handed reliever Rob Zastryzny to a minor league deal and invited him to big league camp this spring, reports Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Zastryzny, 31, has appeared in parts of five big league seasons but was out of MLB from 2019-21. He returned for a brief look with the Mets and Angels in 2022 before logging a more significant workload of 20 1/3 innings over 21 appearances with the Pirates this past season. Zastryzny posted a 4.79 ERA with a 15.5% strikeout rate, 13.3% walk rate and 38.8% grounder rate in that time. Overall, he carries a 4.70 earned run average, 18.4% strikeout rate and 11.2% walk rate in 59 1/3 MLB frames.

While the big league track record may not leap out, Zastryzny has been quite sharp in his past three seasons of Triple-A work, pitching to a 3.62 ERA with respective strikeout and walk rates of 28.8% and 8.1%.

Zastryzny is out of minor league options, so if he makes Milwaukee’s big league roster at any point, he’ll have to stick in the Majors or else be exposed to waivers before he can be sent back down. He’s been previously outrighted as well, so he’d have the right to elect free agency if he clears waivers at any point.

The Brewers have several lefty bullpen options, with Hoby Milner, Ethan Small, Clayton Andrews and Aaron Ashby (pending his rehab from this year’s shoulder surgery) among the options currently on the 40-man roster. Zastryzny will add a non-roster entrant to that mix, and he’ll head to Triple-A Nashville to open the season if he doesn’t crack the roster out of spring training.

Rob Zastryzny Elects Free Agency

Lefty reliever Rob Zastryzny elected minor league free agency, per his transaction log at MLB.com. He cleared outright waivers after being designated for assignment by the Pirates earlier in the week.

Zastryzny pitched in 21 games for the Bucs this season. He tossed 20 2/3 innings, working to a 4.79 ERA in the largest workload of his big league career. While his fastball averaged a personal-high 93 MPH, he struck out a well below-average 15.5% of batters faced. Zastryzny also walked opponents at a lofty 13.4% clip and spent a bit of time on the injured list with forearm inflammation.

The 31-year-old had better underlying numbers with the Bucs’ Triple-A team. His 4.41 ERA over 16 1/3 innings wasn’t far off his big league mark, but he had a solid 23.9% strikeout percentage while walking a microscopic 1.5% of batters faced. He kept the ball on the ground at a 45.8% clip.

Zastryzny has been outrighted a few times in his career, which gave him the right to test free agency. He wouldn’t be eligible for postseason play if he catches on with another club for the rest of the season. It wouldn’t be surprising if he turns his attention to a 2024 landing spot this late in the year.

Pirates Designate Rob Zastryzny, Select Hunter Stratton

The Pirates announced that they have selected the contract of right-hander Hunter Stratton from Triple-A Indianapolis, with left-hander Rob Zastryzny designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Stratton, 26, was a 16th-round pick of the Pirates in the 2017 draft and has been working his way up to the majors since then. He generally posts high strikeout totals but with lots of walks as well, and that has continued to be the case this year. In 56 1/3 Triple-A innings this season, he has a 3.99 earned run average, striking out 30.6% of batters faced while giving out free passes at a 12.8% clip. He will now get a chance to get major league hitters out, making his big league debut as soon as he gets into a game.

Zastryzny, 31, is designated for assignment by the Bucs for the second time this year. He signed a minor league deal with the club in the offseason and cracked the Opening Day roster. He was designated for assignment in July and accepted an outright assignment after clearing waivers. He was added back to the roster a couple of weeks ago but has lost his spot again. Between those two stints, he tossed 20 2/3 innings with a 4.79 ERA, 15.5% strikeout rate and 13.4% walk rate.

The club will place him back on waivers in the coming days. He’s out of options, so any claiming club would have to add him to their active roster. He has just over a year of service time, meaning he could be retained for five more seasons if any club were willing to give him that roster spot. But the last time he was put on waivers, he passed through and stuck with the Pirates, which could perhaps happen again in the days to come.
