Arroyo For Victorino Rumor Is Bogus

By Tim Dierkes | July 4, 2008 at 11:40am CDT

There is a rumor floating about that the Reds and Phillies are working on a Bronson Arroyo for Shane Victorino swap.  However, the Cincinnati Enquirer ran the report by a Reds official who said there’s nothing to it.  Many thanks to Reds beat writer John Fay, who keeps a blog here.

Stark’s Latest: Harang, Bedard, Hardy, Weeks, McLouth

By Tim Dierkes | July 3, 2008 at 4:30pm CDT

Brand new column from ESPN’s Jayson Stark.

  • Stark explains why he feels the trade deadline is overrated.  I guess it all depends on what you expect from it.
  • You may recall Walt Jocketty’s Reds untouchables list from a few weeks ago.  It did not include Aaron Harang.  While the Reds might listen on Harang, there wouldn’t be any kind of discount.
  • The Mariners have pushed Erik Bedard to the backburner, focusing on shopping other veterans.  They’re also not dying to move Raul Ibanez at the moment.
  • The Brewers might be willing to include J.J. Hardy or Rickie Weeks in a trade.  In our chat today, a commenter wondered whether some kind of Hardy-A.J. Burnett swap could work.
  • The Tigers are looking ahead, inquiring about various shortstops they might be able to use in ’09 and beyond.  Perhaps if they find one they’ll decline Edgar Renteria’s option.
  • Add the Marlins to the list of Brian Fuentes suitors.  One source from another team said the cost for Fuentes is "one good piece."
  • Stark agrees with recent indications that the Royals aren’t dying to move Ron Mahay.  Nonetheless, the Yankees, Marlins, Phillies, and Tigers are named as interested parties.
  • Pirate outfield chatter: some teams are calling on Nate McLouth, though the Bucs prefer to move Jason Bay or Xavier Nady.  Despite earlier reports, Stark says the Bucs could consider trading both.  The Rays are "especially interested" in Bay.
  • Stark talked to one club official who hasn’t heard any indications that the Phillies are willing to trade Shane Victorino.  Also possibly off-limits: Double A catcher Lou Marson.
  • To acquire Rich Harden, a package "would have to at least approach last year’s Dan Haren extravaganza."  So, look for him to stay put.  Harden’s velocity was down yesterday, by the way.
  • Brett Myers’ future with the Phillies could hinge on whether they re-sign closer Brad Lidge.
  • Still no buzz around Adam Dunn.
  • C.C. chatter: don’t write off the Indians’ attempt to sign him to an extension.  "One friend" sees Sabathia as more likely to land on the West Coast than the east if he doesn’t re-sign.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Victorino, Hatteberg, Paul Byrd

By Tim Dierkes | May 20, 2008 at 9:07am CDT

The Padres stuff got its own post; let’s see what else Ken Rosenthal has for us today.

  • Rosenthal thinks it makes sense for the Phillies to shop Shane Victorino for pitching, since Jayson Werth is playing well.  That’d increase reliance on Geoff Jenkins, though.  The Marlins expressed some interest in Victorino last year.
  • Rosenthal expects the Reds to move Scott Hatteberg and a catcher before they get down to the more serious business of mullling offers for Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr.
  • Trading Paul Byrd would make sense for the Indians.  Rosenthal says the Brewers, Braves, and Astros "likely would show interest."  Byrd sports a 3.61 ERA and 4.4 K/BB.

Phillies Not Getting Bedard

By Tim Dierkes | December 6, 2007 at 11:48am CDT

UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 11:44am: Scott Lauber says the Phils and O’s haven’t discussed Bedard at the Meeings.  However, he seems to indicate that at some point prior the O’s told the Phils they don’t have the players to get it done.  Joel Sherman of the New York Post wrote on Tuesday that the Phillies were initially told they didn’t match up but were still trying to get involved.

UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 11:04am: Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer shoots this one down, writing that the Phils and Orioles have not discussed Bedard.

FROM 12-6-07 at 9:33am:

According to Joe Haggerty of the Metro out of Philadelphia, the Phillies offered Kyle Kendrick, Shane Victorino, and two unknown prospects to the Orioles for Erik Bedard and were turned down.  It’s generally believed that the Phillies don’t have the young available talent Andy MacPhail seeks, but it never hurts to ask.

Willis Wouldn’t Mind Playing In Philly

By Tim Dierkes | September 11, 2007 at 9:04am CDT

Not exactly a rumor, but worth a mention.  This type of thing is common when teams meet up for a series.  We saw it with Aaron Rowand when the White Sox played the Phillies this year.

Though the Phillies tattooed Dontrelle Willis Sunday night, Willis’s friend Jimmy Rollins and teammate Brett Myers were discussing how they’d love to see him in a Phillies uniform.  Rollins suggested that Willis may be unmotivated in Florida.  He also added that he’s asked Dontrelle and confirmed that the pitcher would not mind playing for Philadelphia.  Of course, Willis doesn’t have any say in it.

I’ve heard estimates anywhere from $7-9MM for Willis’s arbitration reward this winter.  He made $6.45MM in ’07.  The Fish had a $30MM payroll on Opening Day of this year, and will owe Miguel Cabrera several million more in 2008.  So Willis should account for 20-25% of the payroll.

Will the Marlins pay up for one more year and hope Willis rebuilds his value?  Or will they opt to save the money now and trade him this winter?  The latter scenario seems more likely.  Even with his value at an all-time low it seems the Marlins could get one solid young player for Willis.  I speculated recently that there was a tiny chance the Marlins simply non-tender him…but even my assigned 1 in 100 odds on that seem high.

Marlins GM Larry Beinfest can get one guy.  Michael Bourn would be a fine target.  Jim Salisbury suggests that the Marlins are fond of Shane Victorino.  The Phillies are trying to settle their outfield situation for 2008; as you know, Aaron Rowand is a free agent this winter.  Salisbury notes that the Phils might be gunshy about acquiring Willis given the whispers of possible health issues.  They can’t have another Freddy Garcia trade.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Lohse, Hunter, Contreras

By Tim Dierkes | July 16, 2007 at 4:00pm CDT

The latest trade and signing rumors from Ken Rosenthal:

  • Rosenthal believes Alex Rodriguez’s ability to play shortstop could increase the number of suitors.  Take a look at the free agents – there may not be a single viable option at short this winter.  Still, the number of suitors for Rodriguez is severely limited by his massive contract requirement.  Not too many clubs aside from the Yankees and Red Sox can get in on $240MM over eight years or whatever.  The lack of available, reasonably priced shortstops could compel the Braves and Orioles to aggressively shop Edgar Renteria and Miguel Tejada.
  • As a 29 year-old free agent starter with decent stuff, Scott Boras could sell Kyle Lohse as the next Gil Meche this winter.  Meche’s work in the season’s first three months would only aid the wishcasting.  I put up a little Lohse history here, writing that his deal will likely fall somewhere between Jason Marquis and Meche.  Other free agent starters who will be under 30 for the 2008 season: Carlos Zambrano, Jason Jennings, Joe Kennedy, and Byung-Hyun Kim.
  • Rosenthal believes the Rangers will bid on Torii Hunter this winter unless they acquire a proven center fielder this summer.  He mentions that Jon Daniels set his sights on Shane Victorino but the Phils would rather trade Michael Bourn.  Unless the Rangers get a proven guy they will still go after Hunter.
  • The Mariners scouted Jose Contreras and Matt Morris recently, but both were lousy.  I still think Jennings could sneak in there as the best available starter, but he too hasn’t pitched well in July.  Definitely seems like the Mariners will snag some kind of starter.
  • Rosenthal disputes Evan Grant’s report of the Brewers and Indians showing interest in Kenny Lofton.  The Brewers are getting Bill Hall back soon and the Indians have some outfielders on the road to recovery as well.  Perfect, this frees him up for the Cubs!
  • Rosenthal mentions the same teams I did for Kevin Millar, but sees an August deal as a possibility.  Waiting until August doesn’t seem to make sense for the Orioles, as things get trickier then.
  • The Padres could trade Scott Linebrink in order to make payroll room for a starter.  Or they could just sign Brian Lawrence.  I discussed some other options for the Friars here.
