Braves Hire Tim Hyers As Hitting Coach

The Braves announced that Tim Hyers has been hired as a hitting coach for their major league staff. He replaces Kevin Seitzer, who was fired two weeks ago. Hyers had been the hitting coach of the Rangers, so that club will now have a vacancy to fill on their staff.

Hyers, now 53, is a Georgia native. He was born in Atlanta and attended Newton County High School before being selected by the Blue Jays in the 1990 draft. He went on to play in the majors from 1994 to 1999, suiting up for the Padres, Tigers and Marlins. He moved into coaching and scouting after his playing days. He got a job as assistant hitting coach with the Dodgers for the 2016 season.

He has since served as hitting coach for two clubs, winning World Series rings with both of them. He was hired by the Red Sox going into 2018, with Boston winning the title in his first year. He was hired by the Rangers going into 2022, with the Rangers hoisting the trophy in the second of his three seasons there.

It’s always tough to separate player performance from coaching contributions, but Hyers has been around a lot of success lately. He will now take that to his hometown team, something that he is surely excited about. Per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News on X, Hyers still lives in the Atlanta area.

While it’s a nice homecoming for Hyers, the Rangers will now have to embark on a search for his replacement as they look to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season. In a column at the Dallas Morning News, Grant says the club will look to make a new hire, even though they still have bench coach/offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker on the staff.

Red Sox Notes: Trade Deadline, Bloom, Song, Hyers

In an early look ahead to this year’s trade deadline, Joel Sherman of the New York Post identifies the 12-20 Red Sox as potential sellers. Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom rebukes any notion that the team is preparing to punt on the season however, telling Sherman “We are not thinking that way [selling] at all […] The hole we are in is real, but it doesn’t reflect the talent on this club. We know it will take a lot to climb out, but we believe this group can do it.”

Accordingly, Sherman acknowledges how much baseball is left to be played this season and opposes a total teardown for a club that just last year made the playoffs. He does also cite Boston’s frequent record fluctuation this past decade (the team has finished first and last in the AL East four times apiece), however, as reason to brace for a disappointing final win tally. With a number of teams already ahead of them in the Wild Card hunt, to say nothing of their incredibly tough division, the Red Sox figure to have a harder time than most presumptive contenders in reaching the playoffs this year. Thanks to a handful of impending All-Star free agents and a wide open payroll next offseason though, there’s perhaps no team more qualified to reload at the trade deadline before trying for better results in 2023.

  • Pitching prospect Noah Song was selected by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2019 draft but has since seen his baseball career be put on hold due to Navy commitments. As Alex Speier of The Boston Globe details, however, Song has now completed flight school and applied for a service waiver that may allow him to resume his professional baseball career. At the time of his draft selection scouts viewed the right-hander as a first-round talent with mid-rotation upside, albeit one with obvious signing roadblocks, so his return could be quite the boon for a farm system on the rise. It remains to be seen how a multi-year layoff from baseball might impact Song’s athletic abilities or if additional naval obligations will keep his service waiver from being approved, but the Sox for their part seem prepared and supportive of either outcome.
  • In an interview with Christopher Smith of MassLive, former Boston hitting coach Tim Hyers discussed his rationale for leaving the franchise this offseason to take an identical role with the Rangers. Familial considerations, challenge-seeking, and a desire to let current Red Sox hitting coach Peter Fatse rise to the occasion all informed his ultimate departure. Hyers of course has been one of the sport’s more productive hitting coaches in terms of results, as high-octane offense was the calling card of Red Sox teams dating back to his first year under manager Alex Cora in 2018. Hyers’ coaching presence, and lack thereof, seems to be felt by his old and new club so far this season, as the Rangers have improved relatively as a run-scoring unit while the Red Sox currently find themselves as a bottom-three team in MLB in that regard. If there’s one silver lining here in the early-going for Sox fans, it’s that Hyers was approached by the Yankees after leaving his post with Boston but politely rebuffed the club.

Rangers Hire Tim Hyers As Hitting Coach

The Rangers are set to hire Tim Hyers as the club’s new hitting coach, ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan reports (Twitter link).  Hyers was in demand after leaving the Red Sox coaching staff last week, Passan reports, and chose Texas multiple other suitors.

Hyers is a known quantity for Rangers manager Chris Woodward, as the two worked together on the Dodgers’ staff in 2016-17 when Woodward was the L.A. third base coach and Hyers was assistant hitting coach.  Hyers moved from that role to the Sox, where he spent the last four seasons as Boston’s hitting coach (winning a World Series ring in 2018).

Prior to his coaching career, Hyers was also a Major League player, appearing in parts of four seasons with the Padres, Tigers, and Marlins from 1994-99.  His Detroit ties led to his first coaching job as a minor league hitting instructor in the Tigers’ farm system, and he also worked as a scout and minor league hitting coordinator for the Red Sox, as well as a brief stint as Boston’s interim hitting coach in 2014.

The Rangers have now added two well-regarded hitting instructors within a week, as Texas has also hired former Giants hitting coach Donnie Ecker to work as the new bench coach and offensive coordinator.  Ecker’s role is to oversee the organization’s overall hitting philosophies and strategies, while it can be presumed that Hyers will work more directly with the big league roster.

Hitting Coach Tim Hyers Leaving Red Sox

Hitting coach Tim Hyers has declined the Red Sox’ offer to return in 2022 and will not return to the staff, reports Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. He’s instead exploring opportunities with other clubs. In his place, the Red Sox are set to promote assistant hitting coach Peter Fatse to the lead hitting coach role, per Steve Hewitt of the Boston Herald.

The 50-year-old Hyers has spent the past four seasons as hitting coach in Boston and spent the two prior seasons as the Dodgers’ assistant hitting coach. The Sox have been one of the game’s best offensive clubs during that time, and Speier notes that Hyers worked with both Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts to overhaul their approaches at the plate prior to the 2018 campaign. Hyers is the second coach to depart the Red Sox organization this offseason, as chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom already announced during his end-of-season press conference that first base coach Tom Goodwin wouldn’t return to the organization.

Fatse, 34, was a 2009 draft pick of the Brewers (24th round) after playing his college ball at the University of Connecticut. He spent two years in the Brewers’ system and another two years playing on the independent circuit before retiring as a player. He previously served as the Twins’ minor league hitting coordinator before being tabbed as the assistant hitting coach to Hyers heading into the 2020 season.

The Sox still need to replace Goodwin on the staff, and while they’ll handle the departure of Hyers with an internal promotion, they’ll still need to fill the assistant hitting coach role as well. There’s no indication yet as to how they’ll proceed. The team has not formally announced the shakeup to the hitting coach mix but figures to do so before long.
