Minor Moves: Neshek, Wood, Perdomo

By Steve Adams | August 28, 2013 at 3:20pm CDT

Here are today's minor moves from around the league…

  • Right-hander Pat Neshek has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Sacramento from the Athletics, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter). Neshek, who was designated for assignment on Monday, has a 3.58 ERA with 6.7 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 37 2/3 innings this season. He does come with significant platoon splits, however.
  • The Twins unconditionally released Triple-A right-hander Tim Wood, according to Twins director of communications Dustin Morse (on Twitter). Wood, 30, was dominant enough with the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate in 2012 that Minnesota inked him to a one-year, $675K Major League deal despite the fact that he didn't throw a pitch in the Majors last year. He pitched to a 2.19 ERA with 8.0 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 70 1/3 innings for Triple-A Indianapolis last year, but injuries limited him to nine appearances between High-A Fort Myers and Triple-A Rochester prior to his release this season. He allowed nine runs in 9 1/3 innings between those two levels.
  • The Twins also released right-hander Luis Perdomo from Rochester, according to the International League transactions page. The 29-year-old posted a 5.95 ERA with 8.2 K/9 and 6.0 BB/9 in 65 innings at the Triple-A level this season.
  • Edinson Volquez, Edgmer Escalona Aaron Harang, Russ Canzler and Jason Kubel are each currently in DFA limbo, and you can track their statuses using MLBTR's new DFA Tracker.

Central Links: Motte, Martinez, Cubs, Wood

By Steve Adams | May 3, 2013 at 4:46pm CDT

Cardinals closer Jason Motte will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on Monday, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louid Post-Dispatch (on Twitter). Edward Mujica has filled in admirably as the team's closer in his absence, but the Cardinals will likely be the subject of many relief rumors as the trade deadline draws near. Here's more out of baseball's Central divisions…

  • Earlier today, Goold tweeted a link to a story that he wrote nearly two years ago, chronicling the long, difficult process of signing top prospect Carlos Martinez. Martinez, who was promoted to the Majors this morning, had originally been signed by the Red Sox, but that deal fell through due to questions surrounding his documentation. Martinez, whose mother died before his first birthday, was going by the name given to him by his uncle who raised him — Carlos Matias. The Cardinals tirelessly searched for school records and his mother's death certificate to prove his identity, at which point he adopted her last name once again.
  • Cubs prospect Juan Carlos Paniagua is in a similar predicament to the one Martinez initially faced, writes Baseball America's Ben Badler. The U.S. Consulate is currently requesting school records and identification documents of Paniagua's siblings before issuing him a work visa.
  • The Twins still have two weeks to make a decision on right-hander Tim Wood, tweets Phil Miller of the Star Tribune. Wood is on a rehab assignment but appears healthy at this point. However, he only looks "so-so" according to Miller, and Minnesota's bullpen has been a strength early in the season. Because Wood is on the 40-man roster and out of options, he'd have to be exposed to waivers to be sent to Triple-A at the end of his rehab stint.
  • We also learned earlier today that the minor trade which would have sent Mark Teahen from the D-backs to the Reds fell through due to an issue with Teahen's phsyical.

Twins Notes: Liriano, Scouting, Pelfrey, Wood

By Steve Adams | April 29, 2013 at 10:35pm CDT

Twins general manager Terry Ryan spoke with Phil Mackey of 1500 ESPN recently and told Mackey that he's not yet ready to pat himself on the back for last season's Francisco Liriano trade. Mackey opines that the Twins look like clear winners already, noting that the White Sox paid $2MM for lackluster results from Liriano, who didn't even re-sign with the team. In exchange, Minnesota has a serviceable utility infielder in Eduardo Escobar and a 23-year-old lefty in Pedro Hernandez who already has four solid MLB outings under his belt for the Twins. Mackey notes what a breath of fresh air a good trade is after recent missteps including the Johan Santana trade, the Wilson Ramos trade and the J.J. Hardy-for-Jim Hoey swap. Here are more highlights from Mackey's excellent piece…

  • Ryan told Mackey that he's embracing statistical analysis far more in his second run as the team's GM than his first. Ryan consults with Twins' stat guru Jack Goin on every personnel decision, but Mackey notes that "…Ryan's background is still firmly entrenched in traditional scouting."
  • When asked by Mackey if he could form opinions on 18 college players he'd never seen after attending just one college game, Ryan replied: "That's what you're supposed to do, and if you go into that college game and you can't do that then you need to get out of the business, because you're paid to evaluate and make a decision."
  • Ryan feels that lack of command, not lack of stuff, has been the reason for Mike Pelfrey's early struggles in his first season with the Twins. Pelfrey is still less than one year removed from Tommy John surgery. Ryan isn't surprised by the early problems and feels that Pelfrey "will be fine" in the long run, which implies to yours truly that Pelfrey will have a fairly long leash.
  • The Twins have two weeks to make a decision on right-hander Tim Wood, whom they signed to a Major League contract this offseason following his dominant season for the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate in 2012. Mackey reports that Wood's stuff has looked good but notes that the Twins will have to expose him to waivers if he's not on the 25-man roster at the end of his 30-day rehab window because he is out of options.
  • Minnesota "flirted pretty heavily" with Joe Blanton this winter, but it looks like they dodged a bullet when Blanton picked the Angels instead. Mackey notes that Blanton has allowed as many homers (nine) as the entire Twins rotation combined.
  • The Twins will be cautious with how quickly they promote top prospects Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton, as the organization wants to see how they fare when facing pitchers in their respective leagues for a second time. Mackey adds that Sano — Baseball America's No. 9 overall prospect — doesn't have to be added to the 40-man roster until after the 2014 season.
