Minor Moves: Tomas, Oliver, Brignac, Zito

By Mark Polishuk and Brad Johnson | April 4, 2015 at 9:33pm CDT

Here are today’s minor transactions from around baseball, with the newest moves at the top of the post…

  • The Diamondbacks have optioned Cuban outfielder Yasmany Tomas, the team reports via Twitter. The club signed Tomas for $68.5MM over the offseason. He struggled both defensively and offensively this spring. A stint in Triple-A should give him time to adjust to the outfield and improve his plate approach.
  • Phillies Rule 5 pick Andy Oliver has elected free agency after he was outrighted, the club announced via Twitter. The hard throwing lefty has struggled with walks throughout his career. That continued this spring with 11 walks and 22 strikeouts in 12 and two-thirds innings. The club also announced on Twitter that they reassigned catcher Rene Garcia, first baseman Russ Canzler, and infielder Cord Phelps to Triple-A.
  • Marlins utility infielder Reid Brignac has accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A, tweets Joe Frisaro of MLB.com. In 905 major league plate appearances, Brignac has a .222/.266/.314 line.
  • Athletics pitcher Barry Zito has accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A, tweets Jane Lee of MLB.com. The former star is working his way back from a one-year hiatus. He posted a 4.79 ERA in 20 and two-thirds spring innings. The 37-year-old struck out 14 and walked five. A former ninth overall pick of the A’s, the southpaw struggled after moving across the Bay to San Francisco on a seven-year, $126MM contract. That deal concluded after the 2013 season.
  • The Red Sox have released Casey Crosby, Bryan LaHair, and Matt Hoffman per the MLB transactions page. Crosby was once a top prospect with the Tigers, but the 26-year-old lefty has yet to develop command. Lahair, 32, had a nice run with the Cubs in 2012 when he hit .259/.334/.450 with 16 home runs in 380 plate appearances. He spent the 2013 season in Japan and split 2014 between Cleveland’s Double and Triple-A clubs.
  • The Phillies have released shortstop Tyler Greene according to the MLB transactions page. Greene, an 11th round pick, was once rated among the Phillies’ best prospects. He missed the entire 2014 season and has never posted a strikeout rate below 33 percent at any level.
  • The Giants have released pitcher Edgmer Escalona per the MLB transactions page. Escalona pitched in parts of four seasons for the Rockies, accruing 100 innings. He has a career 4.50 ERA with 6.39 K/9 and 2.88 BB/9.
  • The Cubs have released lefty pitcher Francisley Bueno according to the transactions page. The 34-year-old has pitched in parts of four season for the Braves and Royals. The soft tossing lefty has a career 2.98 ERA with 4.92 K/9 and 1.79 BB/9 in 60 innings. He’s a pure platoon pitcher.
  • The Braves released former closer Matt Capps per MLB.com. The righty last appeared in the majors in 2012. He has a career 3.52 ERA with 6.53 K/9 and 1.72 BB/9. He’s thrown just 12 minor league innings over the last two seasons – both with the Indians.

  • The Phillies have released right-hander P.J. Walters, according to the club’s official transactions page.  Walters was signed to a minor league deal in November.  The righty posted a 6.28 ERA over 152 career innings with the Cardinals, Blue Jays and Twins from 2009-13 and he spent last season in minors with the Jays and Royals.
  • The Rays acquired right-hander Bradin Hagens from the Diamondbacks in exchange for cash considerations, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports (via Twitter).  Hagens made his Major League debut last season, posting a 3.38 ERA over a 2 2/3-inning cup of coffee with Arizona.  A sixth-round pick of the D’Backs in 2009, Hagens has a 4.08 ERA, 1.52 K/BB rate and 6.0 K/9 over 598 1/3 career minor league innings.  He’ll report to Double-A with the Rays, Topkin notes.
  • The Dodgers have acquired lefty Rudy Owens from the Athletics, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (Twitter link) hears from A’s assistant GM David Forst.  Owens unofficially announced the trade himself via his Twitter feed.  Owens has a 3.61 ERA, 6.9 K/9 and 3.47 K/BB rate over 781 1/3 minor league innings in the Pirates’ and Astros’ farm systems, and he received his first taste of MLB action last season, making one start for Houston.
  • The Mariners have released outfielder Phillips Castillo, Baseball America’s Matt Eddy reports (Twitter link).  Castillo received a $2.2MM bonus from the M’s when he signed with them as a 16-year-old in 2010, a price tag befitting his status as one of the international market’s top hitters of that year.  Over four seasons and 870 minor league plate appearances, however, Castillo only managed a .226/.303/.383 slash line and 20 homers, never advanced beyond the low A-ball level.

Minor Moves: O’Malley, Greene, White Sox

By Mark Polishuk | January 22, 2015 at 10:39pm CDT

Here are today’s minor moves from around baseball, with the newest transactions at the top of the post…

  • The Mariners signed infielder Shawn O’Malley to a minor league deal and invited the 27-year-old to Spring Training, the team announced.  O’Malley made his Major League debut last season, appearing in 11 games with the Angels.  A fifth-round pick by the Rays in the 2006 draft, O’Malley has a .258/.351/.338 slash line over 2985 minor league plate appearances.
  • The Phillies signed shortstop Tyler Greene to a minor league deal, ESPN’s Jayson Stark reports (via Twitter).  Greene, drafted 30th overall by the Cardinals in 2005, posted a .645 OPS over 746 PA with the Cards, Astros and White Sox from 2009-13, and he spent last season at the Triple-A level in the Braves’ and Padres’ systems.
  • The White Sox signed right-handers Jairo Asencio and J.D. Martin to minor league deals and invited them to Spring Training, the team announced.  Both righties spent last season pitching in the Korean Baseball Organization.  Asencio posted a 5.34 ERA over 55 2/3 IP with four teams from 2009-13.  Martin, drafted 35th overall by the Indians in the 2001 draft, last pitched in the majors in 2010.
  • The Yankees signed catcher Eddy Rodriguez to a minor league deal, as per the team’s MLB.com transactions page.  Rodriguez has a .235/.286/.386 slash line over 2271 minor league PA, mostly in San Diego’s system, as well as a two-game cup of coffee with the Padres in 2012.

Padres Acquire Tyler Greene From Braves

By Jeff Todd | April 22, 2014 at 4:27pm CDT

The Padres have acquired infielder Tyler Greene from the Braves in exchange for a player to be named later, reports David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (via Twitter).

Greene, 30, was playing at Triple-A for the Atlanta organization. He has seen action at the MLB level in each of the last five seasons, though never more than the 116 games he appeared in over the 2012 campaign. For his career, Greene has a .224.289/.356 triple-slash in 746 plate appearances. He has appeared mostly at short and second, but has seen time at every other position on the diamond except the battery.

Braves Sign Tyler Greene

By Steve Adams | August 17, 2013 at 4:31pm CDT

The Braves have signed infielder Tyler Greene to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Gwinnett, the team announced on Twitter. The contract will serve as a nice birthday gift for Greene, who is 30 years old today. He was released by the White Sox earlier in the week.

Greene, who is represented by Scott Boras, spent 22 games with the Sox earlier this season, batting .222/.263/.352 with one homer. He hit a combined 11 long balls between the Cardinals and Astros in 116 games last season, but did so with just a .230/.274/.400 batting line.

The Braves are known to be looking for more offense at second base with Dan Uggla on the shelf and Tyler Pastornicky out for the season with a torn ACL, so the addition of Greene could present them with one alternative. This doesn't, of course, mean that general manager Frank Wren won't continue to look for options on waivers.

White Sox Release Tyler Greene

By Steve Adams | August 13, 2013 at 12:08pm CDT

The White Sox have released Tyler Greene from Triple-A Charlotte, according to Knights director of PR and media relations Tommy Viola (Twitter link).

Greene, who turns 30 on Saturday, spent 22 games with the Sox earlier this season, batting .222/.263/.352 with one homer. He appeared exclusively at second base for the White Sox, though he has significant big league experience at shortstop and has also tallied 101 Major League innings at third base. He had a .649 OPS with the Knights this season prior to his release.

Greene was released by the Astros this Spring, a mildly surprising move given the power he showed in Houston last season. After being acquired from the Cardinals on Aug. 9, Greene hit .246/.278/.460 with seven homers over 39 games for the Astros. The former first-round pick is a lifetime .224/.289/.356 hitter in parts of five big league seasons with the Cardinals, Astros and White Sox.

White Sox Outright Tyler Greene

By charliewilmoth | June 5, 2013 at 2:17pm CDT

WEDNESDAY: Greene cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte, according to Scott Merkin of MLB.com (on Twitter).

SUNDAY: The White Sox have designated infielder Tyler Greene for assignment, Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com reports (on Twitter). The move clears space for Gordon Beckham, who is returning from the disabled list.

The White Sox acquired Greene near the start of the season, shortly after he was released by the Astros. In 54 plate appearances with Chicago, Greene hit .235/.278/.373. In 743 career plate appearances with the White Sox, Astros and Cardinals, Greene has hit .225/.291/.357.

White Sox Sign Tyler Greene

By Tim Dierkes | April 4, 2013 at 12:40pm CDT

The White Sox signed infielder Tyler Greene, tweets Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.  He'll presumably add to the club's infield depth at Triple-A.  With less than three years of Major League service, the White Sox can control Greene for a while if he proves useful.

Greene, 29, hit .230/.274/.400 in 330 plate appearances for the Cardinals and Astros last year.  Astros GM Jeff Luhnow acquired Greene, a former draft pick of his in the first round in '05, from the Cards in August of 2012.  Though the Astros would go on to trade Jed Lowrie, they added Ronny Cedeno at shortstop in March, leading to Greene's release last month.

Astros Release Tyler Greene

By Tim Dierkes | March 26, 2013 at 11:18am CDT

The Astros released infielder Tyler Greene, tweets MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.  McTaggart notes that Greene will become an unrestricted free agent if he clears waivers on Thursday.

Greene, 29, hit .230/.274/.400 in 330 plate appearances for the Cardinals and Astros last year, playing both middle infield positions.  Astros GM Jeff Luhnow had acquired Greene in August of last year from his former team.  The former first-round pick seemed like the team's projected starter when they traded Jed Lowrie in February, but now they'll go with Ronny Cedeno.

AL Notes: Blue Jays, Astros, Loe

By charliewilmoth | March 24, 2013 at 11:40pm CDT

Former Expos and Orioles GM Jim Beattie, who's now a pro scout for the Blue Jays, says the Jays are looking for help at second base and in their bullpen, Bob Elliott of the Canadian Baseball Network notes. "We’re always looking for pitching depth in the bullpen and our situation at second place is a little unsettled," Beattie says. "We have two guys (Emilio Bonifacio and Maicer Izturis) there but they’re not everyday guys." Here are more notes from the American League.

  • Astros GM Jeff Luhnow explains the rationale that led the team to replace Jed Lowrie with Tyler Greene, and then to replace Greene with Ronny Cedeno, Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle reports. "When the Cardinals released Ronny Cedeno, he was a player that we had targeted during the offseason. But we had Lowrie most of the offseason, so we weren't aggressive," says Luhnow. "When (Cedeno) became available, we went back to our original plan, which was to try and get him in here." The Cardinals signed Cedeno in late January, while the Astros did not trade Lowrie (to the Athletics) until early February.
  • Reliever Kameron Loe is hoping to stay with the Mariners, Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times writes. The Mariners need to decide by Tuesday whether to open a roster spot for Loe, or the non-roster pitcher could exercise an out clause in his contract. "I hope we can work something out," Loe says. "I really like it here." Loe posted a 4.61 ERA with 7.2 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 68 1/3 innings for the Brewers in 2012.

Astros Shopping Tyler Greene

By Steve Adams | March 24, 2013 at 7:55am CDT

Tyler Greene, who is out of options, has been told by Astros GM Jeff Luhnow that he will not make the club following the signing of Ronny Cedeno to a Major League deal yesterday, according to Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle. As such, the team is exploring trade possibilities with the 29-year-old infielder (Twitter links).

The Astros acquired Greene, a former first-round pick, from the Cardinals in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations last August. Greene hit .246/.278/.460 with seven homers in 133 plate appearances for Houston following the trade. He has significant Major League experience at second base, shortstop and third base, although both UZR and The Fielding Bible caution that he's a below-average defender at all three positions.

Greene has 689 career plate appearances but just a .224/.292/.356 batting line. He's fared significantly better against left-handed pitching (.720 OPS) than right-handed pitching (.601).
