Jays Terminate Shigeki Noguchi’s Contract

By | February 18, 2009 at 8:02pm CDT

According to Sports Hochi, via Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker, the Blue Jays have terminated their contract with left-hander Shigeki Noguchi.

Noguchi’s physical showed irregularities in his throwing elbow.  He had been training in Florida in preparation for spring training, but has since returned to Japan.  The 35-year-old wasn’t expected to make the Jays’ roster out of camp.

Halladay A Midseason Trade Candidate?

By Tim Dierkes | February 16, 2009 at 1:46pm CDT

Joel Sherman of the New York Post wrote yesterday about possible midseason trade candidates, Roy Halladay in particular.  He says Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi "did not discount" the possibility of Halladay being this year’s C.C. Sabathia, snagging this quote from Ricciardi:

"Ownership wants no part of trading Roy at this time.  He’s the face of the organization. Right now we are not thinking about going down that road. But that is what we feel in February. Who knows how you feel in June?  We have thought about it, this has not escaped us [that Halladay could leave as a free agent, and trading him might be best for the long-term health of the organization].  In June, we may have to say. ’Is this the way we want to go?’ It will be up to ownership, and ownership has a strong attachment to Doc."

Halladay is signed at a reasonable $14.25MM this year and $15.75MM for ’10.  Ricciardi also said the Jays could attempt to extend Halladay’s contract this spring.  Sherman also learned that the Jays tried to trade Vernon Wells this winter.  Wells is owed $100MM over the next six seasons, and has a full no-trade clause.  He hired a personal trainer who will shadow him this season in an attempt to keep him healthy.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Red Sox, Cruz, Angels, Jays, Braves

By Cork Gaines | February 13, 2009 at 11:29am CDT

On this date 14 years ago, Hideo Nomo signed with the Dodgers after "retiring" from professional baseball in Japan, becoming the first Japanese player in the big leagues in over 30 years. Nomo would go on to win 123 games in 12 big league seasons, including two no-hitters. Since then, at least 25 other pitchers have made the jump from Japan to the U.S. and Nomo is arguably still the best to make the move. With several big names still looking for their own big league contract, let’s take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere…

  • Fire Brand of the American League speculates on some in-season trade targets for the Red Sox.
  • MLB Notebook takes a look at the players most affected by the recent signings of Bobby Abreu and Adam Dunn.
  • Jorge Says No! takes a look at the market for Juan Cruz.
  • The Sports Banter reflects on what they consider to be a "disappointing" offseason for the Angels.
  • UmpBump recaps the offseason for the Blue Jays and looks at their projected lineup.
  • Braves Blast rummages through the scraps of what is left for the Braves outfield now that most of the big names have signed elsewhere.

Blue Jays Sign Shigeki Noguchi

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 11, 2009 at 7:54pm CDT

NPB Tracker’s Patrick Newman passes along an article from Sports Hochi in Japan that reports that the Blue Jays have signed lefty Shigeki Noguchi to a minor league contract. Noguchi won the 1999 MVP as a member of the Chunichi Dragons, but has fallen off considerably since winning 19 games that year.

Noguchi, 35, will attend minor league camp and figures to start the season in AA or AAA.

Giants Sign Rich Aurilia

By Tim Dierkes | February 9, 2009 at 8:03pm CDT

8:03pm: Henry Schulman says the deal is done.  Aurilia will earn $1MM if he makes the team.

11:54am: According to Ken Rosenthal, "Rich Aurilia will return to the Giants on a minor-league contract.  Aurilia, 37, chose the Giants over the Cubs and Phillies.  His deal is expected to be finalized on Monday."  Henry Schulman learned that the Blue Jays were also in on Aurilia, and the Astros made a Major League offer early in the winter.

Aurilia hit .283/.332/.413 in 440 plate appearances last year, but he does handle lefties well for the most part.  Though their deals are not guaranteed, the Giants having both Aurilia and Juan Uribe in camp may be another sign that they’re backing off on Joe Crede.  At the least, Crede would have to come down from his $7MMish demand for the Giants to sign him.

Blue Jays Avoid Arb With Shawn Camp

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 7, 2009 at 9:51am CDT

According to MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian, the Blue Jays have agreed to $750K deal with Shawn Camp for 2009. The agreement gives the Blue Jays 12 straight years without an arbitration hearing.

Camp had originally requested $950K; the Blue Jays countered with $700K. He pitched to a 4.12 ERA in 40 appearances last year.

Blue Jays Add T.J. Beam, DFA Russ Adams

By Tim Dierkes | February 5, 2009 at 4:23pm CDT

According to MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian, the Blue Jays claimed pitcher T.J. Beam off waivers from the Pirates and designated infielder Russ Adams for assignment.

Beam, 28, posted a 4.14 ERA and 4.7 K/9 in 45.6 innings for the Pirates last year.  The Bucs had signed him as a free agent in January of ’08, but designated him for assignment a few days ago to make room for Eric Hinske.

Adams, 28, hit .259/.341/.417 at Triple A this year.  He was drafted 14th overall in 2002.  He was the team’s starter at shortstop and second base at various points in ’05 and ’06.
