Josh Towers is Available. Does Anyone Care?

By Tim Dierkes | July 28, 2007 at 1:28pm CDT

Turns out Josh Towers had some nasty things to say about the rest of his club after yesterday’s loss.  I guess they weren’t that bad, but by the established standard of "we all went out there and battled" quotes, he really let his ’mates have it.

Towers has gone through waivers unclaimed before, so it would seem that if J.P. Ricciardi wants to get rid of him, he’ll have to eat some salary.  But that presumes that somebody would take him at any price, and J.P. is casting doubt on that:

"The only guy we got a call on was Towers, with Philadelphia," GM J.P. Ricciardi had admitted just prior to the game. "They came to see him (vs. the M’s) and we never received another call back. Maybe he wasn’t their cup of tea."

I’m a little surprised no one has bit on Towers in all this time; he was dreadful last year, sure, but he’s always kept walks down, and he’s been pitching his entire career in the AL East.  He would seem like a decent fit for the Phils or the M’s.  At this point he seems like a Kei Igawa backup plan of sorts.

Blue Jays Not Interested In Jack Wilson

By Tim Dierkes | July 23, 2007 at 9:55pm CDT

It sounded dubious when it first surfaced, and now J.P. Ricciardi has spoken: the Blue Jays are not interested at all in Jack Wilson.  Did the Pittsburgh front office plant that one?

Ricciardi does seem open to trading Josh Towers.  As far as I can tell, Towers doesn’t reach free agency until after 2009.  For an NL team, Towers could help at the back end of a rotation.  Thing is, no one seems to be actively searching for a backend rotation guy.

Pirates Ask For Glaus In Jack Wilson Deal

By Tim Dierkes | July 23, 2007 at 9:57am CDT

The Pirates are shopping shortstop Jack Wilson, and the Blue Jays are known to be interested.  One would expect the Bucs to be happy with the salary relief and maybe ask for a token prospect.  Instead, Dave Littlefield asked about Troy Glaus.

Now, it was just an inquiry, and the Jays quickly shot it down.  Obviously we don’t know how the phone call went, so Littlefield might’ve devised a reasonable trade scenario involving additional players.  The Pirates could definitely use a big bat like Glaus, but he does not seem likely to approve a trade to Pittsburgh even if the two sides did agree on the players.

It’s hard to tell just how available Glaus is, but a recent report indicates that he can be had.  A return to the Angels still seems most likely.

Phillies Assistant GM Scouting Toronto

By Tim Dierkes | July 23, 2007 at 9:12am CDT

According to the Toronto Sun, Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. was in attendance on Saturday at the Rogers Centre.  Naturally, the speculation would be that Amaro was evaluating Josh Towers, the Blue Jays starter that day.

For the day, Towers threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.  On the season, Towers has a 4.97 ERA (92 ERA+) but sports a nice 60/14 K/BB ratio in 83 1/3 innings pitched.  Towers had good years in 2003 and 2005 before a disastrous 2006 (8.42 ERA).

What interests the Phillies, or at least it should, is that Towers can keep the ball on the ground, a key to success at Citizens Bank Park.  In addition, Towers is eligible for arbitration at the end of the season, so he would not be a long-term commitment if the Phillies decided to non-tender him.

Complicating matters, though it’s a nice problem to have, is the success of Kyle Kendrick and J.D. Durbin the in the Phillies rotation, combining for a 6-2 record as starters.  Kendrick has turned in quality start after quality start and Durbin has allowed only one run in his previous two starts combined.  The likelihood of the Phillies making a deal is directly dependent on their confidence in these two pitchers.

No word on what the Blue Jays would be seeking in return for Towers.

Blue Jays Interested In Jack Wilson

By Tim Dierkes | July 22, 2007 at 7:25pm CDT

Previously on this site we have questioned why any team would want to acquire Pirates’ shortstop Jack Wilson (no offense to him).  Now comes word that at least one team is in on him – the Blue Jays.  But Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes a deal couldn’t be reached by the July deadline because the money issues could get tricky.

Wilson makes $6.5MM in ’08, $7.25MM in ’09, and a $0.6MM buyout for ’10.  He can block trades to six teams each season.  Kovacevic thinks a deal would most likely occur in the offseason, as Wilson might not pass through waivers in August.  Still, no harm in trying it if you’re Dave Littlefield.  Personally I’d be surprised if any team would risk having that contract dumped on them in its entirety.  Bucco Blog thinks Wilson is a lock to be traded.

Wilson has hit .252/.305/.347, pretty much in line with his career numbers.  Blue Jays’ shortstops have hit .233/.272/.314 this year (mostly Royce Clayton and John McDonald).  So Wilson is an upgrade, but that’s only because shortstop has been such a ridiculous black hole for Toronto.  You do have to credit Wilson’s defense, among the best in the game at the position by one metric.

J.P. Ricciardi’s options this winter: Omar Vizquel, David Eckstein, and probably Juan Uribe and Cesar Izturis.  Technically you could include Kaz Matsui and Alex Rodriguez as other free agents who can play short.

Troy Glaus Available

By Tim Dierkes | July 21, 2007 at 11:24am CDT

The general feeling, based on comments from Troy Glaus and J.P. Ricciardi, has been that Glaus is staying put.  However, a Toronto Sun article from Bob Elliott quotes an NL scout saying that Glaus is indeed available.  The 31 year-old third baseman would be hard to replace, so he won’t come cheap.  No reason Ricciardi shouldn’t at least field offers.

Glaus, of course, has a full no-trade clause.  When he was last traded, he required an $11.25MM player option for ’09 be added to his deal.  At present he will make another $4.4MM this year and $12.75MM in ’08.  If he were to concede to another trade, maybe he’d want $26-30MM guaranteed for 2009-10.  Just a guess.

The common sentiment is that Glaus would end up back in California if traded.  Elliott names the Padres and Angels as teams in need of a power-hitting third-sacker.  But let’s give some props to rookie Kevin Kouzmanoff, who is hitting .283/.338/.500 since May 1st.  Elliott says the Dodgers aren’t in on Glaus, leaving a return to the Halos are the most feasible scenario.  He’d be a perfect addition for the Angels, who are ninth in the league in slugging.

Scouts Monitoring Yanks/Blue Jays Yesterday

By Tim Dierkes | July 20, 2007 at 10:10am CDT

The New York Post reports of several teams represented at yesterday’s Yankees/Blue Jays contest.  The Dodgers, Twins, Tigers, and Marlins all had scouts on hand.  So which players were being watched?

The starters were Dustin McGowan and Chien-Ming Wang, and we can safely assume neither of those guys is going anywhere.

Possible Yankees being watched: Scott Proctor, Kyle Farnsworth, Bobby Abreu, Melky Cabrera, Luis Vizcaino.  Vizcaino and Cabrera played in the game, though they are the least likely of the group to be dealt.

Possible Blue Jays being watched: Scott Downs, Matt Stairs, Troy Glaus.  Stairs is probably the Jay most likely to be traded; he’s hitting a strong .282/.348/.544 in 206 ABs.  He’s known for his ability to hit righthanders well.

Feel free to mix and match in the comments – who’s after which players?

Rosenthal’s Latest: Santana, Glaus

By Tim Dierkes | July 13, 2007 at 5:33pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal has a new column up, dealing more in speculation that actual rumors.  Nothing wrong with that.

  • Rosenthal as well as Barry Bonds’s agent believe the Giants will retain him for the 2008 season.  However, Brian Sabean could begin to rebuild nonetheless.  The patchwork aging veteran approach of 2007 need not be repeated.
  • It would be interesting to see what Terry Ryan could get if he made an uncharacteristically bold move by trading Johan Santana this summer.  He would be able to get one or two of the very best young players in the game.  Keep in mind, though, that Santana has a full no-trade clause this year.  He gets the same for ’08 with a top three Cy Young finish this year.  Santana wants to stay in Minnesota, and would offer a hometown discount.
  • Rosenthal speculates that if J.P. Ricciardi would deal within the division, maybe the Yankees could get Troy Glaus as A-Rod insurance.  Glaus could play first base for the remainder of this season.  Ricciardi isn’t shopping Glaus though; he said he’d need to be knocked over to break up the core lineup.  That would mean one of the Yankees’ much-hyped pitching prospects (not Hughes, but something good).

Ricciardi Criticizes Burnett

By Tim Dierkes | July 5, 2007 at 9:21pm CDT

Why would a general manager publicly criticize one of his own players?  Perhaps to fire him up, though that strategy is questionable at best.  Most likely such public criticism is simply frustration boiling over into the media, frustration better kept private.

Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi took a few shots at pitcher A.J. Burnett today, essentially saying he regrets the signing and questioning Burnett’s willingness to pitch through pain.  How is that strategically a good move for the baseball team?  It’s not.  It’s emotion spilling over.

The comments seem even more foolish when you consider that the Jays might want to trade Burnett.  Burnett didn’t get along with Florida’s front office, and now he’s going to have problems with Ricciardi and company.  It’s no way to build up trade value.  Why doesn’t Ricciardi point the finger at himself?  Burnett was a known health risk at the time of the signing.

In the long run, Ricciardi will prove a worse investment for the Blue Jay franchise.  I don’t have a bone to pick with him; I just think he’s done a poor job since his hiring in 2001.

Could Jays Shop Burnett?

By Tim Dierkes | July 2, 2007 at 11:35pm CDT

A.J. Burnett timed his contract year perfectly, reaching career highs with 32 starts and 209 innings in 2005 for the Marlins.  He even would’ve made another start that year, but he ripped the team publicly in September and the Marlins asked him to leave.

The outburst didn’t diminish interest in Burnett during the 2005-06 offseason; reportedly 22 teams expressed interest.  The Cardinals and Nationals submitted offers, but Toronto won with five years and $55MM.  The deal was panned at the time, but the money looks reasonable now that the pitching market has shifted upward.

Burnett’s stay in Toronto over the past 1.5 years has been laden with DL trips.  This time he got a cortisone shot in his sore shoulder and hopes to return shortly before the July 31st trade deadline.  Jeff Blair of The Globe and Mail believes J.P. Ricciardi might try to cut ties with Burnett this month, if he can convince some team to gamble on his nasty stuff.

Here’s the contract situation.  He has about $6MM left this year, and $12MM in ’08.  At that point, Burnett can opt out of the contract.  Prior to 2009 season, Burnett must decide whether he can top a two-year, $24MM deal on the open market.  That will depend mainly on his health in 2008.

Could Ricciardi really convince a GM to gamble on Burnett’s health and also bear the risk of being stuck with him through 2010?  Not likely.  Not even if Burnett comes back and tosses a no-hitter on July 30th.  The money would be tricky – perhaps Ricciardi would agree to shoulder some of the load if Burnett chooses to honor his contract for 2009-10 (for that would imply that he’s not really worth $24MM over that span).

Billy Beane is definitely Ricciardi’s favorite trading partner, but Beane has his own Burnett to deal with in Rich Harden.
