Troy Glaus Contacted Yankees About Comeback

Soon after the announcement of Alex Rodriguez's left hip injury, Troy Glaus contacted the Yankees and expressed an interest in returning to baseball according to WFAN's Sweeny Murti. Cody Ransom, who filled in at third base during A-Rod's first hip surgery in 2009, also contacted the team.

Glaus, 36, has been retired since 2010. He hit .240/.344/.400 with 16 homers in 483 plate appearances for the Braves that year, though he played first base almost exclusively. Glaus was hampered by knee and shoulder injuries late in his career, and he's supposedly 100% healthy after taking the last two years off. The Yankees have since signed Kevin Youkilis to plug their third base hole.

Heyman On Marlins, White Sox, Jenks, Glaus

There is likely an unusually short list of managers on the hot seat this year, writes Jon Heyman of SI.com. Marlins skipper Edwin Rodriguez is the lone manager who truly has uncertain job security, according to Heyman. Rodriguez received a one-year deal from the Marlins, which is rare for managers and suggests he doesn’t necessarily figure into the club’s long-term plans. Here are the rest of Heyman’s rumors.

  • Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria told Heyman that "no one's on the hot seat.”
  • Jim Leyland of the Tigers, Jim Riggleman of the Nationals and Ozzie Guillen of the White Sox are not necessarily on the hot seat, but they’re worth keeping an eye on, according to Heyman.
  • Leyland will likely be given the chance to return to Detroit after the season when his contract expires, but that’s not a sure thing, according to Heyman.
  • One White Sox person told Heyman that Guillen “isn't going anywhere.” 
  • Before the Yankees signed Rafael Soriano, GM Brian Cashman told Bobby Jenks that he wasn’t offering any setup man $8MM. The Yankees signed Soriano for $35MM over three years, though Cashman advised against it.
  • Free agent Troy Glaus is still at home after drawing some interest this winter.

Troy Glaus May Sit Out 2011 Season

With most of this year's free agent first basemen off the market, Troy Glaus is one of the few remaining names who could intrigue teams in need of power. However, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the former World Series MVP will sit out at least the start of the 2011 season, and perhaps longer. While Glaus isn't officially retiring, agent Mike Nicotera tells Rosenthal that his client has passed on the offers he's received so far this winter.

"Troy had opportunities to sign with more than one club this offseason and each time he was presented with a particular opportunity, he weighed it against spending more time with his wife and family," Nicotera said. "After a good deal of thought and discussion in each instance, he decided to pass on playing."

Glaus signed a one-year deal with the Braves last January, and turned in a strong first half, posting an .802 OPS and 14 homers before the All-Star break. However, wrist and knee injuries derailed the 34-year-old's season, leading to a .598 OPS in 134 second half plate appearances.

MLBTR's Ben Nicholson-Smith discussed potential suitors for Glaus a month ago, but many of the teams mentioned in the piece have signed similar players since then.

Quick Hits: Soriano, Manuel, Galarraga, Angels

Some items from around the majors…

  • The Angels aren't one of the teams reportedly still interested in Rafael Soriano, tweets Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated.  The Yankees are "still trying," in spite of their earlier statements to the contrary.
  • Charlie Manuel's agent tells Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com that Manuel and the Phillies have a mutual interest in working out a contract extension before Opening Day.  Manuel has one year left on his current deal, and Salisbury speculates that he's looking for a two-year extension worth roughly $4MM per season.
  • Armando Galarraga is out of options, eligible for arbitration and has probably been squeezed out of the Detroit rotation by Brad Penny, reports Jason Beck of MLB.com.  If Galarraga gets too large of a salary bump in arbitration, the Tigers could choose to trade or just release him before Opening Day.
  • The Angels' quiet offseason has been heavily criticized, but Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles.com reminds us that the Halos still have a very solid team.
  • If the Twins don't re-sign Jim Thome, Kelly Thesier of MLB.com says the team could return to what it was looking for last winter: a right-handed hitting backup option in the outfield or at first base.  Thesier cites Jorge Cantu and Troy Glaus as possibilities, and we've heard the Padres were considering the same two players.  The Twins could also dip into the rest of the DH market, or look to upgrade their bullpen.
  • There isn't much historial evidence to suggest that Josh Beckett will return to his ace form over the long run, writes John Tomase of the Boston Herald.

Padres Notes: Cantu, Glaus, Catching

  • The Padres were known to be looking for a platoon partner for the newly-acquired Brad Hawpe at first base, and SI's Jon Heyman tweets that Jorge Cantu and Troy Glaus are candidates, though either is a "remote possibility."  Heyman reported last month that the Padres were looking at Cantu and Glaus for their first base opening, and both still make sense given that Hawpe has only played nine games at first in his career.
  • In an MLB.com mailbag, Corey Brock writes that San Diego wanted to pick up another veteran catcher this winter, but John Buck's three-year, $18MM deal with Florida raised the price on the entire catching market.  For instance, the Padres thought they had a good chance to sign free agent Rod Barajas, who ended up signing a surprisingly high $3.25MM deal with the Dodgers.
  • From that same mailbag, Brock says San Diego is looking to add a left-handed bat to come off the bench.

Possible Suitors For Troy Glaus

Troy Glaus has a home run title and a World Series MVP Award to his name, but the former third overall pick has a dwindling number of potential destinations for next year. The 34-year-old posted a .240/.344/.400 line for the Braves last year, slumping badly in the second half. He was playing shortstop as recently as 2006 (interleague games only) but Glaus is a first baseman/DH at this stage in his career. He has appeared in just nine games at third since 2009.

Some DH vacancies have been filled and the teams that do need first basemen and DHs may hesitate to add Glaus because of his second half slump and injury history (he missed time with knee and shoulder injuries in 2009-10). Here are some teams that could consider Glaus between now and Spring Training:

DH openings:

  • The Rays could add Glaus as a first baseman/DH.
  • The Rangers have discussed Glaus and have a DH opening.
  • The Twins could consider him if they don't re-sign Jim Thome.
  • The Blue Jays have Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind at first/DH. Would they consider reacquiring Glaus if his price drops enough?

An alternative to LaRoche and Lee:

  • It wouldn't shock many people if Derrek Lee and Adam LaRoche end up playing for the Nationals and Orioles. But if either one of those clubs decides to look at alternatives, Glaus could become an option.

A potential National League fit:

  • The Dodgers occasionally used Ronnie Belliard at first base last year. He's gone, so the Dodgers could use a right handed hitter to complement James Loney, who has hit just .261/.321/.381 against lefties in his career. Marcus Thames may be a better fit for the Dodgers, since he can also play left field, but Glaus makes some sense if his price drops enough.

Rockies Interested In Glaus, More Extensions

Yes, the Rockies announced the Troy Tulowitzki extension and came to terms with Jorge de la Rosa, but that wasn't all. Here are the details on the rest of Colorado's busy day:

  • The Rockies are interested in Troy Glaus, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post (on Twitter). Glaus could be a right-handed version of Jason Giambi, who wasn't a natural complement to Todd Helton since both bat from the left side.
  • The Rockies are still "in the mix" for David Bush, but probably not for Aaron Harang, according to Renck (on Twitter). Both pitchers appeared on Renck's recent list of pitching targets for the Rockies.
  • Renck reminds us that Jorge Cantu, Jose Lopez and Kevin Kouzmanoff are options for the team (Twitter link). Only Cantu is a free agent; Kouzmanoff and Lopez are non-tender candidates.
  • Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd says he has told Carlos Gonzalez and Ubaldo Jimenez that he wants to lock them up long-term, according to Jim Armstrong of the Denver Post. O'Dowd has discussed a long-term deal with Gonzalez's agent, Scott Boras, but he doesn't have to worry about locking Jimenez up. The right-hander is under team control through 2014.
  • ESPN.com's Buster Olney hears (on Twitter) that De La Rosa turned down multiple offers for more money to re-sign in Colorado.
