The 2027 Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be hosted by the Cubs at Chicago’s Wrigley Field, commissioner Rob Manfred announced Friday morning. MLB’s 97th midsummer classic will take place on July 13 that year.
“This is an honor for our team, our city and our state,” Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said in this morning’s press release. “We can’t wait to showcase how we have preserved this iconic ballpark. Wrigley Field means so much to Cubs fans and millions of people who have visited what we believe is a baseball cathedral and one of Illinois’ top tourist destinations. We play in a world-class city that is especially beautiful in the summer and we’re looking forward to hosting the best players in our great game and fans from around the world.”
It’ll be the Cubs’ fourth time hosting the All-Star Game — including their first since 1990. The Cubs also hosted All-Star Games in 1947 and 1962. Wrigley Field now becomes the only active MLB stadium to host the All-Star Game four times. Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium (closed in 1995) and old Yankee Stadium (closed in 2008) are the only other MLB venues to host four All-Star Games.
“I applaud the Ricketts family, the entire Cubs organization, the City of Chicago and the Chicago Sports Commission for presenting an impressive vision for 2027 All-Star Week,” Manfred said in his own prepared statement within this morning’s release. “The hard work put in to transform all of Wrigleyville into an outstanding destination deserves to be celebrated and shared on a national stage. We look forward to bringing the Midsummer Classic back to historic Wrigley Field and working alongside the Cubs, city and state officials, and the local organizing group to bring an extraordinary experience to the baseball fans of Chicago. Most importantly, Major League Baseball and its partners will leave behind a lasting impact on the communities across Chicago through the meaningful initiatives of the All-Star Legacy program.”
Of course, the 2027 All-Star Game is shrouded by the looming specter of a potential work stoppage. The active collective bargaining agreement spans the 2022-26 seasons and concludes on Dec. 1 of next year. With several owners and Manfred himself publicly referencing their desire for a salary cap — and the union’s swift retort that a cap would amount to “institutionalized collusion” — another league-implemented lockout has been widely speculated upon.
Major League Baseball locked out the players in the 2021-22 offseason — a decision which resulted in a 99-day transaction freeze and for months jeopardized the 2022 season. The two parties agreed to an eleventh-hour deal and an abbreviated spring training that allowed a full 162 games to be played. A similar stalemate could play out in the 2026-27 offseason, though if the league is earnest in its desire to steadfastly hold out for a salary cap, that’s expected to be a nonstarter for the union and would more seriously threaten the loss of games in the 2027 season.
Asked today about a contingency plan for Wrigley Field’s All-Star hopes in the event of a 2027 labor stoppage, Manfred replied only: “My contingency plan is to make an agreement with the players and play the 2027 season” (link via ESPN’s Jesse Rogers).
Why so many NL teams in a row? I guess Vegas gets 28 for A’s.
mlb – It’s based more on longest time without hosting.
Rogers Centre an Fenway are two that will soon have their turn hosting.
Yeah, Rogers Centre was a finalist for 2027. Wrigley is long overdue. I can see Toronto in 2028 and Fenway in 2029. For Fenway it’ll be 20 years since their last one.
Log – 30 years, last time was 1999.
My math ain’t mathing today. Haha
Camden Yards has been waiting since 1993.
Camden Yards is due soon too. A recent $600M check from the state will be used for an upgrade to box seats, scoreboard and the like. I could see the O’s getting one soon too (2028 is rumored). Baltimore hasn’t had one since 1993 either.
Spot on. I’m guessing 2028-2030. They’re going to do that awful home plate suite “upgrade” moving the PressBox, video boards, sound system. And I hope to the baseball gods, the effing bathrooms. They’re awful
It’s not.
Oriole Park has been waiting here for three decades. It was a rotation then it became a bidding system aka MLB picks. The MASN fiasco contributed to that change
For Oriole fans we will get the festivities available after all the upgrades are done (w state funds)
Odds are 2028 be the Bluejays hosting the all star game. Toronto hasn’t hosted all star game since 1991. With all renovations over the last two winters and more this winter. Jays be hosting in not to distant future.
stugots – Ha, like your handle!!
Jays will get it soon, but not 2028 ….. MLB has stated the 2028 site will be centrally located within the Olympics sites that year, because they are hoping to cram the ASG and MLB players participating in the Olympics all during the same week.
Yeah doesn’t make sense to me either.
MLB wouldn’t put it in Vegas during the inaugural season. Usually it’s a couple years later.
Sounds like fun, but let’s replace the home run derby with something different!
Waaaaah
No Atlanta again?
MLB gives the Cubs the game the year there’ll be no baseball. For shame, Manfred. For shame!
Yes Manfred, what a guy!
He knows if there’s any kind of lockout or strike it will be catastrophic to the game. They have to avoida strike or lockout at all costs.
I want it back in Pittsburgh so bad. Almost enough to commit to watching it.
Bob Nutting has entered the chat.
I was there, 2006- Ozzie was managing!
Nice! God that 2006 White Sox team was good! I wish they had gotten one more with that team from 2005.
No extra wild card spot back then, misfortune to finish 3rd w 90+ wins
They should have it in Pittsburgh, no question.
That’s assuming there isn’t a lockout by the owners to try to force the players to accept a salary cap. I’m sure the jamokes who thought Jed did a good job at the trade deadline will be excited by this announcement, though.
2027 season isn’t happening. League is going to hold firm on the salary cap and the players aren’t going to accept one. It’s going to be a long negotiation.
i hope bill murray acts as MC
chandler – I heard it will be Jussie Smollett, sponsored by Subway.
Being one of the people who thinks Hoyer did a good job not ruining the future and filling immediate holes I am happy. Be happier if I live to see it being 69. There’s no way baseball is going to be dumb enough to go through a lock out again after the damage it’s done in the past.. But I’ve been wrong before.
@Uncle: My predictions are often wrong, I admit. But I predict there will be no baseball season in 2027, and thus no ASG at WF. The owners are going to go all out for a cap, and the players will be willing to miss the season to prevent one.
Sadly most “fans” who bootlick billionaires will blame the players.
If there’s a lockout it will be equally dumb on both sides. And baseball doesn’t need a cap. It needs smarter owners and POBO’s who hand out dumb contracts.
Hey you want a starter? Stroman is available for free. And before you say it, I said if Hoyer wants a starter from now on he’ll have to look down. But I didn’t mean look in the gutter.
They Jays have the next longest drought (1991) so they should be up next.
Baseball has never been more competitive with many teams competing for a championship. They are making money. It would be devastating to the sport if there was a work stoppage and would be hard to come back from. Don’t be stupid MLB.
NY and LA will be happy to keep making the playoffs every year with financial might other pro sports don’t allow via cap. On flip side, as long as they make money, several owners content to be feeder teams that “try” to cycle in some window of winning alternated with years long rebuilds. This is more of an owner vs owner battle b/c too many don’t want a salary floor as much as players don’t want a cap. It’s also rank-and-file players vs stars within union negotiation priorities.
What a week for the Cubs. It’s announced their network is being moved to the highest cable tier where some people can’t afford it, they give the idiot president of baseball operations a contract extension, and they do basically nothing at the trade deadline after claiming they’re all in. And now they get an All-Star game in a season where there is a great chance of a work stoppage.
Ah well, least they’re going to win the world series, nothing can go wrong they’ve got the Brew Crew down for the count. All good tidings here on out print up those t shirts
Q all the blowhards about “well they won in 16, let’s see what you can do”!!!
Since I refuse to clear my history, my Google search continually suggests “Chicago Cubs at Detroit Tigers” no matter how many times I delete it. I’m taking that as a sign that it will be the first game of the 2025 World Series.
And the Cubs might’ve also had a chance of hosting World Series games this fall if Jed Hoyer had the nads to approach the deadline the way Preller, Dombrowski and Dipoto did- Know what your team needs to get to October and make it happen.
Really wanted a starter, but at least he got bullpen help a drastic change from last two seasons. But yeah Preller, Dombroski, Dipoto and even Cashman took care of business.
Yes but you just named competent GMs who have made the playoffs since 2020…
I personally hope the cubs flip it, as usual, so Jed/Rickity Crickets can look even dumber at Cubs Con.
Win schmin. Meh, so long as they sing the jingie jangie jingle all is well that and Ronnie Woo
Manfred and ownership want a lockout. They crave hard caps, no restrictions on tanking, the end of arbitration, and, in a fantasy world, contracts to no longer be guaranteed. It burns brightly, and these are people used to exploiting business opportunities. Expect a lock out
Tanking no longer has a benefit because look at the Rockies they will probably end up with the absolute worst record this year but because of the lotto they could be drafting forth and the White Sox could get that number one pick no one knows it could be the Athletics at number one the White Sox at 2 & the Rockies at 3.
There’s a distinction between a lockout (like we had the last time) and a strike/work stoppage. I would bet on the former happening as owners want a shortened free agency period anyway. I think there’s too much money on both sides for any official games to be missed.
I’d like to share your optimism. There are multiple structural issues with the current CBA, and there are tradeoffs that could be made, but with current tax laws, the willingness of local governments to give handouts, and huge revenue streams like gambling, the Owners want more of it all. I can’t blame them–they are businessmen, and not expected to show any particular love for the game. They only get these opportunities every few years.
Just listen to Rickett’s brag about his golden goose, but never about the team. Wrigley is all about the park if they win baseball game that’s great, but not necessary. 3 wins in a 150 years.
Consolation prize for never winning the world series again.
Winning in ’25- book it!
Gimme Field of Dreams
There’s going to have to be a lot of security in Chicago.
They are pregaming in Wrigleyville already.
Always smart to pregame before going to any sports event. Get a 12 pack for the same price as 1 tallboy inside the arena or stadium. Of course that 12 pack is shared among friends but it’s still cheaper
Or…who needs friends when you have a 12 pack. Was selling drinks at Nascar and this dude kept returning every 8 minutes for 2 drinks. Kept asking him, why don’t you get your friends to help you carry. My partner at the stand quilted me for not cutting him off after the 10th trip. “But he was a great tipper!” I told her.
I watch the All-Star game in passing these days but it’s cool to see it back in Chicago. Getting around Wrigleyville will be a challenge during that week.
While the owners and their stoolie Manfraud want to talk salary cap, how about a cost cap for the fans? Cap ticket prices, beer, parking, etc.? Maybe then they’ll realize how it sounds. Salary cap for me, not for thee!
Woah, hold it there! Capitalism is the greatest thing to happen to mankind! You take it like a true American patriot! /s
That it will have been 37 years is ridiculous.
Cleveland Municipal and Yankee Stadium were more than just closed, they were demolished. As most. fans probably know, the three oldest surviving ballparks today are Fenway, Wrigley, and Dodger Stadium.
Then the big A
I think you are right. Kind of amazing really how few ballparks built more than 30 years ago survive. For a sport that celebrates its history, it sure doesn’t celebrate the places where that history happened.
What a dump stadium
MLB continues to be apparently disinterested in Toronto as an All-Star host and in Canada as a market. Ridiculous at this point.
Who doesn’t love America’s hat??
There will not be a 2027 season.
Does this mean the Cubs will host in 2028?
Your screen name answers the question.
Was hoping for Sacramento 🙁
Jed gets deal. Check
Cubs get All Star game. Check.
Jed clowns the faithful on deadline day.
Priceless
Rays mystery stadium 2028 let’s make it happen!
I can do without anything associated with that crappy old stadium!
And Toronto still waits.
Nice. Beautiful stadium. Long team history. Great city. Fun!
Well, I guess this takes away any small possibility for Wrigley Field hosting All In 2027…
If they play the 2027 All Star game at all itll probably be a miracle.
That is going to be a blast. There is something special about Wrigley. Just an energy and vibe that is incredible.
It’s funny 95% of the comments are people moaning, complaining, finding anything negative, on literally every post, no matter the topic.
I appreciate your take.
Thanks. A day game at Wrigley was one of my all time favorite baseball experiences.
I can’t wait to do it again with my son.
Sure, just like there will be MLB games played in 2027…..
Is that a giant Orange rodent in the photo crossing the street?
The radiation levels …shouldn’t be too bad by then…..
