Heyman Discusses Huston Street

By Tim Dierkes | March 21, 2008 at 1:52pm CDT

SI.com’s Jon Heyman says "some executives believe Huston Street is available for a steep price."  Last we’ve heard the A’s were talking extension with Street.  In January, the Chronicle’s Susan Slusser had this to say on him:

Street opens the season with the team but potentially could get moved by the deadline if a contender were to lose a closer, but overall, he’s less likely than Blanton to get dealt – he’s three years younger and, coming off an arm injury, he’s not going to bring back as much.

To help describe Street’s likely high price, Heyman tells us that the A’s asked the Yankees for Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes for Joe Blanton.  That’s odd, given the Yanks’ unwillingness to trade that much for Johan Santana.

Marlins Waive Jose Castillo

By Tim Dierkes | March 21, 2008 at 12:36pm CDT

The Marlins put infielder Jose Castillo on waivers today, though they have the option of pulling him back.  It seems like a way to gauge interest.  The Marlins may prefer to let Jorge Cantu play third regularly, as he’s had a strong spring and has a decent track record (insert obligatory 117 RBI season mention here).  The Marlins also have Dallas McPherson in the mix if he can get healthy.

Castillo could make sense for the Dodgers given his versatility, though he’s never hit much.

Giants Like Kotchman And Mathis

By Tim Dierkes | March 21, 2008 at 12:26pm CDT

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News writes that the Giants recently inquired with the Angels about first baseman Casey Kotchman and catcher Jeff Mathis.  Baggarly speculates that the Halos might like the idea of a reunion with Bengie Molina (owed $12MM over the next two seasons).

Of course, the value of the two Angels players far exceeds that of Molina.  No deal is close; Angels GM Tony Reagins was frank about that.  The Giants don’t have much in the way of valuable trade chips.  They’ve got overpriced, undesirable veterans plus a strong core of young pitching that they need to keep.

The Angels theoretically could part with Kotchman if they think Kendry Morales is ready (or if they wanted to shift Garret Anderson or Juan Rivera over to first, though neither has played there).  Mathis could be traded now; a separate deal with the Giants could make sense.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Bruce, Longoria

By Cork Gaines | March 21, 2008 at 11:45am CDT

Yesterday Rob Neyer of ESPN.com wrote about the fates of Baseball America’s top two prospects, Jay Bruce and Evan Longoria. While Bruce start the season in the minors, Neyer notes that the Reds could be a playoff contender if Bruce and Joey Votto receive 1,000 plate appearances. On the other hand, a decision has yet be made on where Longoria will start the season. Neyer feels that the Rays may wish that Longoria was not playing so well in Spring Training. He thinks the Rays should forgo the potential savings of keeping him in the minors and buy some goodwill with the fans by showing them that the team is serious about winning.

Keeping top prospects in the minors to begin the season is likely to become a growing trend. Decisions in both of the above cases may at least in part be based on future arbitration and free agency eligibility. A team can delay free agency by just postponing a player’s debut a few weeks. And as arbitration figures continue to rise, team’s can delay the start of the arbitration clock by waiting until June to promote a prospect. Last season the Brewers accomplished this with their top prospect Ryan Braun by waiting until May 24th to promote him to the majors. In doing so, Braun will not be eligible for arbitration until after the 2010 season.

Let’s take a look at what is being written about Bruce and Longoria in the Blogosphere…

  • Redleg Nation understands starting Bruce in AAA, but laments the idea of having Corey Patterson batting leadoff. They worry that this confirms the belief that Dusty Baker prefers veterans even if they are less talented.
  • Red Reporter is split on the issue of Bruce noting that the issue is not as clear as we would like it to be. They also wonder if the Reds are staggering the debuts of their prospects so their arbitration and free agency clocks are also staggered.
  • Bugs & Cranks wonders if the Reds had already decided Bruce’s fate even before bringing Patterson on board, for the sole purpose of delaying Bruce’s arbitration clock.
  • At Fanhouse, Pat Lackey tries to justify the demotion of Bruce, noting that he may be better off developing under the tutelage of somebody other than Baker, getting more experience and delaying his arbitration clock.
  • On the other hand, Eamonn Brennan of Fanhouse thinks any team not managed by Baker would have kept Bruce on the roster.
  • Rays of Light notes that Longoria’s future teammates may not be happy if he is demoted. Rays of Light wouldn’t be happy with a demotion but they understand the reasoning.
  • Outs Per Swing notes that if Longoria is demoted, Willy Aybar will start at third. They do not believe that Aybar’s recent hamstring issues will have an effect on the team’s decision regarding Longoria.
  • Sports Indeed notes that Longoria is receiving a lot of playing time in the spring and wonders if this is an indication that he will be on the opening day roster.
  • Rays Index predicts a May 26 debut for Longoria based on his arbitration clock.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Loretta, Ensberg, Lopez, Ring

By Tim Dierkes | March 21, 2008 at 9:41am CDT

Ken Rosenthal has some Spring Training odds and ends this morning.

  • Rosenthal adds Mark Loretta as a possible third base acquisition for the Dodgers.  Given their desire for a relatively affordable guy who can also handle second, Rosenthal has linked them to Ron Belliard and Esteban German previously.  Loretta shouldn’t be too hard to pry away from the Astros.  Though he can’t play second, Morgan Ensberg could be an option if the Yankees let him leave.
  • The Nats are shopping Felipe Lopez, who’s said he wouldn’t be content on the bench.  Rosenthal says the Nationals have their eye on awful shortstop Angel Berroa as a possible replacement, which is strange on multiple levels.  Not only is Berroa not a Major Leaguer at this point, but the Nats plan to use Cristian Guzman at short.
  • Royce Ring is said to be "perhaps the most available of the Braves’ out of options relievers."  Who needs a lefty?

Tigers Interested In Wuertz

By Tim Dierkes | March 21, 2008 at 9:03am CDT

According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers are targeting Cubs reliever Mike Wuertz.  He notes that the Cubs like Marcus Thames and Brandon Inge.  Thames’ inability to play center and Inge’s contract could be issues though, in my opinion.

Wuertz, 29, is an underrated reliever with a nasty slider.  Given the state of Detroit’s bullpen, he could see save chances if acquired. This was his first year of arbitration eligibility, and he settled at $860K.  Wuertz is pretty far down in the Cubs’ bullpen pecking order, for some reason.

White Sox Waive Uribe

By Tim Dierkes | March 21, 2008 at 8:51am CDT

FRIDAY, 8:50am: Heard from ESPN’s Keith Law on the two pieces of info below.  He says they don’t jive – if a guy is on outright waivers, he can’t be pulled back.  Sounds like Cowley had it right – Mark Gonzales says the Sox can keep Uribe if no one claims him and Uribe is not being released.

THURSDAY, 6:32pm: Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times has the latest.  First of all, second base candidate Danny Richar is out for a month.  Cowley adds that a team claimed Uribe and the White Sox pulled him back to make a deal.  Cowley’s not sure if that deal will get done though.

WEDNESDAY, 3:00pm: According to George Ofman WSCR 670 The Score out of Chicago, the White Sox are expected to place infielder Juan Uribe on outright waivers.  Ofman cautioned that this rumor is unconfirmed by the White Sox, but Mark Gonzales heard the same rumor from a big league scout.  I believe this would give any team a chance to claim Uribe by taking on his $4.5MM salary.  Uribe and his agent haven’t heard anything from the Sox.

The one team I’ve seen linked to Uribe is the Orioles, who currently have a need at shortstop and may have one at second if they trade Brian Roberts.

For more discuss of the Uribe situation, check out South Side Sox.

Shapiro, Minaya Met Yesterday

By Tim Dierkes | March 20, 2008 at 7:42pm CDT

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that phone buddies Mark Shapiro and Omar Minaya met in person yesterday evening.  Any chance the Indians and Mets could match up for a trade?

We know the Mets may be looking to move Jorge Sosa and/or Scott Schoeneweis.  The Indians are currently trying to decide whether to give their last bullpen spot to Tom Mastny, Jorge Julio, or Scott Elarton; not sure if either Met pitcher would help.

The Mets are known to be looking for outfield assistance.  The Indians have two out of options outfielders: Shin-Soo Choo and Franklin Gutierrez.  Choo is recovering from Tommy John surgery and may have to join the South Korean army.  Gutierrez is the frontrunner to start in right field.  Theoretically the Tribe could part with half of their left field platoon – David Dellucci or Jason Michaels.  Dellucci is shaking off a sore forearm currently.

The Mets could also use another starter; Cliff Lee or Jeremy Sowers might be available.

Could Tigers Trade For An Atlanta Reliever?

By Tim Dierkes | March 20, 2008 at 7:23pm CDT

7:21pm: David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution confirms Detroit’s interest in the Braves’ Out Of Options Four.  DOB can envision a scenario where the Braves carry three of the four and trade one.

3:23pm: Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press speculates that the Tigers and Braves may match up well for a trade.  Morosi notes four out of options relievers for Atlanta: Blaine Boyer, Chris Resop, Royce Ring, and Tyler Yates.  He also mentions "frequent trade discussions" in recent years between the two clubs.

ESPN’s Jayson Stark wrote yesterday that the Tigers "would like to add a big-time set-up arm."   Stark said nothing was imminent but the Tigers have been active in trade discussions.  The above Braves relievers don’t fit the "big-time" criteria; Atlanta’s four would make sense for Philly if they weren’t in the same division.

My list of more highly regarded guys who might be available: Brian Fuentes, Damaso Marte, Joe Nathan, Jamie Walker, Chad Bradford, Huston Street, Alan Embree, Kevin Gregg, Jon Rauch, and Chad Cordero.  Any others come to mind?

Orlando Cabrera Extension Talks May Carry Into Season

By Tim Dierkes | March 20, 2008 at 7:17pm CDT

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times couldn’t get much commenting out of Kenny Williams or Orlando Cabrera regarding the state of contract extension talks.  The Sox do want to sign their shortstop, who can become a free agent after the season.  Cabrera doesn’t mind letting talks carry into the season.

I imagine Cabrera wants something in the neighborhood of three years and $24MM.  PECOTA would give a little more than half that amount; Cabrera is already 33.

Next year’s free agent market has perhaps three viable shortstop options aside from Cabrera: David Eckstein, Adam Everett, and Rafael Furcal.  Cristian Guzman could become one with a nice year.  Furcal is obviously the cream of the crop; it might make sense for the Cubs to renew their interest.
