Reds Back Off Rolen Deal

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 4:13pm CDT

4:13pm: ESPN's Peter Gammons says the Reds "backed off a potential deal" for Rolen.  The Reds are actually hoping to move some contracts, and will listen on Bronson Arroyo, David Weathers, Aaron Harang, and Arthur Rhodes.  Plus there's the issue of the Jays not wanting to trade Rolen if they keep Halladay.

2:00pm: CBSSports' Danny Knobler says the Jays would get Edwin Encarnacion and others, if this does get done.  The sticking point appears to be how much of Rolen's remaining $15MM the Jays would assume.

Meanwhile, Bastian (via Twitter) has a source saying all is quiet here.

1:39pm: A Ken Rosenthal/Jon Paul Morosi source says the Reds-Rolen talks are "going nowhere."  The writers suggest a Halladay trade could help move things along.

1:19pm: Via Twitter, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian says his source would not deny the Rolen-Reds talks (hat tip Drunk Jays Fans).

12:34pm: No mention of Alonso from him, but Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun tweets, "Looks like Rolen to Reds has a 'good chance' of getting done."

12:20pm: Joe McDonald of the Providence Journal says the Reds and Jays are talking about a Rolen-Yonder Alonso swap.  Say what?  Alonso, who signed on August 15th of last year, would have to be a player to be named later in the unlikely event he's dealt.

9:07am: The Blue Jays have many trade targets aside from Roy Halladay, so let's collect that information in one post.

Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun says the Twins are still chasing shortstop Marco Scutaro, after Freddy Sanchez landed with the Giants.  Elliott adds that the Reds "met last night to decide to come up with a package to land third baseman Scott Rolen."

Dodgers Acquire George Sherrill

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 30, 2009 at 3:09pm CDT

3:09: Ed Price confirms that the Dodgers acquired Sherrill. Rosenthal and Morosi do, too.  Bell is a well-regarded 22 year-old power prospect, though Baseball America is unsure whether he can stick at third base.  BA projects Johnson as "a big league reliever or back-end starter."

2:44pm: MLB.com's Ken Gurnick reports that the Dodgers acquired George Sherrill for Josh Bell and righty Steve Johnson.

2:40pm: Yahoo's Gordon Edes says the Orioles are "on the verge of trading Sherrill to the Dodgers for Scott Elbert and Josh Bell."  Sherrill, 32, is under team control through 2011.  He has a 2.40 ERA with 20 saves in 41.3 innings this year. Fantasy leaguers, time to pick up Jim Johnson.

2:03pm: Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse (via Twitter) has a source saying Sherrill's a Dodger, but he is working to confirm the info.  ESPN's Jayson Stark's source says there's no agreement, however.  The Dodgers are making a push for him this afternoon, but there are at least eight interested clubs.

Stark adds that the Dodgers want two relievers, with Toronto's Jason Frasor on the radar.

THURSDAY, 11:43am: Morosi and Rosenthal say the Dodgers are pursuing both Sherrill and Roy Halladay.  They may only be able to acquire one, since some of the same prospects are being discussed in each case.  The writers say the O's prefer Josh Bell to Blake DeWitt for Sherrill.  Baseball America loves Bell's raw power but wonders if he'll be able to stick at third base.

WEDNESDAY, 7:10pm: Morosi and Rosenthal say that you can count the White Sox in as a team interested in Sherrill, though it's unclear if the teams have made contact. It's speculated that Josh Fields might go to the Orioles in a deal, as they're looking for help at third base pending the departure of Melvin Mora.

2:44pm: As many as eight teams are pursuing George Sherrill, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Two or three of the teams are actively engaging the O's in trade talks.

The Angels are interested, as are the Dodgers, whose prospects appeal to Baltimore. Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that the Dodgers are focused on trading for Sherrill now that Cliff Lee's off the market.

Heyman Talks Giants

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 1:52pm CDT

In a new blog post, SI's Jon Heyman discusses the Giants' plans.

  • The Giants "haven't ruled out trading for more offense" after getting Freddy Sanchez and Ryan Garko.  Heyman says that at some point the Giants scouted Miguel Tejada, Carlos Lee, Josh Willingham, Nick Johnson, Mark Teahen and Marco Scutaro.  We can probably cross Johnson off the list.  And we've seen no sign the Astros would sell.
  • The Giants would like to add a fifth starter, given the loss of Randy Johnson for at least August.  Heyman speculates on a few names such as Bronson Arroyo, Doug Davis, and Jon Garland.

Marlins In Serious Talks For Heath Bell

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 1:48pm CDT

1:48pm: A Rosenthal/Morosi source says the Rangers aren't in on Bell, Sherrill, or Matt Capps.

11:49am: ESPN's Buster Olney says the Marlins declined the request for Miller or West, leaving talks between the two clubs at a standstill.

Meanwhile, Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post says the Marlins are also in on George Sherrill.

11:12am: SI's Jon Heyman tells us the Marlins are "are in serious discussions to try to land Padres closer Heath Bell."  Heyman says it looks like it could be Andrew Miller or Sean West, names that have been put forth in previous reports.  Either young lefty seems like a solid return for Bell.  Heyman notes that the Yanks also have interest, but the Fish "are in good position to make a deal."  Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi at FOX Sports acknowledge interest from the Yanks, but say the teams have not had serious discussions.  The writers also mention the Rangers "on the periphery."

Rosenthal and Morosi wrote yesterday that 10 to 15 teams are pursuing Bell.  He's under team control through 2011 and sports a 2.01 ERA this season.

Astros Looking For Pitching

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 1:33pm CDT

We haven't heard much on the Astros lately.  Today ESPN's Jayson Stark says they're looking for pitching, but only "expect to make a deal for another starter only if one 'falls in their lap.'"  Astros ace Roy Oswalt recently received an injection to treat a back injury.  The Astros are 3.5 games out in the NL Central, 4 out in the Wild Card.

Padres Rumors: Kouzmanoff, Durango, Correia

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 12:50pm CDT

A few Padres rumors from Tom Krasovic:

  • The Marlins, who are eyeing Heath Bell, are a bit more open to trading Rick VandenHurk than guys like Sean West and Andrew Miller.
  • All quiet on the Kevin Kouzmanoff front, not that the Pads haven't tried to gauge his value the last few years. The 28 year-old third baseman is hitting .248/.282/.417 in 401 plate appearances this year and is under team control through 2012.
  • Krasovic says speedy minor league outfielder Luis Durango is drawing interest, and he could potentially be packaged with starter Kevin Correia. Yesterday we saw the Brewers linked loosely to Correia by Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

Josh Willingham Not Traded

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 12:38pm CDT

12:38pm: Harlan says it's a stiff neck, not a trade.

12:36pm: Outfielder Josh Willingham was pulled from the Nationals' lineup today, and the Washington Post's Chico Harlan thinks "something is definitely going down."

Odds & Ends: Yankees, Mets, Red Sox

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 12:30pm CDT

Thursday linkage…

  • La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says the Pirates wanted Aaron Hicks or Danny Valencia from the Twins for Freddy Sanchez.  LEN3 has a few other hot stove tidbits as well.
  • ESPN's Keith Law finds the Giants' trade of Tim Alderson for Sanchez reasonable, due to "slippage in Alderson's stuff."
  • Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe talks about how major additions such as Halladay, Adrian Gonzalez, or Victor Martinez would help the Red Sox.  Via Twitter, ESPN's Amy K. Nelson heard from a source guessing that Gonzalez has a ten percent chance of being moved.
  • Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports via Twitter that the Mets designated pitcher Elmer Dessens for assignment to make room for catcher Robinson Cancel.
  • Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports say the Mets "do not intend to give up a significant prospect" in their quest to add a left-handed reliever.
  • Via Twitter, Ken Davidoff of Newsday informs us that the Blue Jays expanded their coverage of the Yankees' farm system.  Davidoff feels that this coverage more likely reflects the Yanks' interest in relief help than in Roy Halladay.
  • The Pirates don't have anything serious going on with relievers Matt Capps or John Grabow, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  They might be done.
  • Joe Smith and Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times find the Rays unlikely to make a major deal, with Cliff Lee off the table.
  • ESPN's Buster Olney lists all kinds of holes that could be filled via the trade market for various clubs.

Royals Acquire Josh Anderson

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 11:36am CDT

According to a press release, the Royals acquired outfielder Josh Anderson from the Tigers for cash considerations.  The speedster hit .242/.282/.315 with 13 steals in 15 tries for Detroit before being designated for assignment.  The Royals say they'll make a corresponding roster move once they determine Anderson's reporting date.

MLB.com's Jason Beck notes that the Royals and Yankees also had interest in Anderson.
