Minor League Transactions: Marti, Anderson

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 13, 2010 at 4:31pm CDT

Yadel Marti generated some buzz a couple winters ago when he defected from Cuba. It took a while, but the righty signed with a major league organization. Matt Eddy of Baseball America has the details and other transactions from August 2nd-11th:

  • The Braves became the third team to release Josh Anderson this season. The Reds and Brewers also released Anderson, who has combined for a .448 OPS for those three organizations.
  • The Red Sox released infielder Tug Hulett.
  • The Dodgers released former big league pitcher Bobby Livingston. The lefty logged 56.1 innings for the 2007 Reds.
  • The A’s signed Yadel Marti from Veracruz of the Mexican League. The 31-year-old pitched for the same team as Luis Heredia, a top pitching prospect who’s drawing interest from the Pirates and Blue Jays, among other clubs.

Josh Anderson Signs Minor-League Deal With Atlanta

By Mark Polishuk | June 15, 2010 at 7:31pm CDT

Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Braves have signed outfielder Josh Anderson to a minor-league contract and assigned him to Triple-A.  This is Anderson's second go-around in Atlanta, having played 40 games for the Braves in 2008.

Anderson has a .272/.313/.352 line in 519 major league plate appearances with the Royals, Tigers, Braves and Astros from 2007-09.  Since being non-tendered by Kansas City over the winter, Anderson played in the Reds and Brewers' minor league systems this season.  Milwaukee released him last Friday.

Minor League Transactions

By Mark Polishuk | May 20, 2010 at 9:07pm CDT

Baseball America's Matt Eddy gave his weekly look at some of the comings and goings in the minors.  Here are few of the notable names involved in this week's report….

  • Milwaukee signed outfielder Josh Anderson, who was just released last week by the Reds.  Anderson's career .665 OPS isn't much to look at, but the Kentucky native is a decent base-stealer — he had 25 swipes out of 30 attempts with Kansas City and Detroit in 2009.
  • Utilityman Kory Casto was signed by Arizona.  Casto last played in the majors in 2008 with Washington, and he has posted a .540 OPS in 239 career plate appearances.  He split his time at first, third and in the outfield for Triple-A Syracuse in 2009.  Casto signed a minor league deal with Detroit over the winter but was released in April.
  • Right-hander Devern Hansack was released by the Red Sox.  Hansack pitched relatively well in limited action with Boston from 2006 to 2008, posting a 3.70 ERA and a 5:00 K/BB ratio in nine career major league games, three of them starts.
  • Veteran catcher J.R. House, who last played in the majors in 2008, was signed by the Mets.  Originally drafted by Pittsburgh in 1999, House was ranked at the 21st best prospect in baseball by Baseball America before the 2001 season.
  • Rough week in the Ka'aihue household: Kila was sent back down to Triple-A by the Royals, and younger brother Kala was released by the Athletics.  Kala Ka'aihue put up some impressive power numbers of his own in his first four seasons in the minors, but struggled over his last two years in the Atlanta and Oakland systems.

Minor League Transactions: Anderson, Espinosa

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 14, 2010 at 4:31pm CDT

Some familiar names were involved in some under-the-radar moves this week, as Baseball America's Matt Eddy reports:

  • The Reds released Josh Anderson, who they signed to a minor league deal in January. Anderson stole 25 bases in 29 attempts for the Royals and Tigers last year, but as his .240/.276/.304 line shows, he doesn't draw walks or have much power.
  • The Indians traded Neil Wagner to the A's for cash. Wagner is a 26-year-old right-handed reliever who has career rates of 10.6 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9, but has yet to play above AA.
  • The Rays officially signed Sergio Espinosa. The 23-year-old Cuban lefty signed last month, according to Jorge Ebro of El Nuevo Herald, but the move recently became official.

Reds Sign Josh Anderson To Minor League Deal

By Mike Axisa | January 5, 2010 at 3:40pm CDT

The Reds have signed outfielder Josh Anderson to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training, according to a tweet from MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.

The speedy outfielder has bounced around from Houston to Atlanta to Detroit to Kansas City in his brief big league career, during which he's hit .272/.313/.352 in 519 plate appearances. Johnson has stolen 36 bases in 43 tries, though UZR says he's a poor defender in center but strong on the corners.

Royals Acquire Josh Anderson

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 11:36am CDT

According to a press release, the Royals acquired outfielder Josh Anderson from the Tigers for cash considerations.  The speedster hit .242/.282/.315 with 13 steals in 15 tries for Detroit before being designated for assignment.  The Royals say they'll make a corresponding roster move once they determine Anderson's reporting date.

MLB.com's Jason Beck notes that the Royals and Yankees also had interest in Anderson.

Yankees Eyeing Corey Patterson, Josh Anderson

By Tim Dierkes | July 30, 2009 at 7:41am CDT

We already knew of the Yankees' interest in recently-designated outfielder Josh Anderson; Joel Sherman of the New York Post says to add the newly-released Corey Patterson to the list.  Sherman says the goal is to find a fill-in for Brett Gardner, who broke his thumb on Saturday.  Anderson and Patterson both have speed, at least.

In that same blog post, Sherman draws a connection between Chien-Ming Wang and Brandon Webb.  He wonders whether both pitchers could hit the free agent market after this season.  On a related note, we've heard that Webb will have shoulder surgery on Monday; hopefully just a clean-up.

Odds & Ends: Rangers, Yankees, Braves

By Eddie Schmid | July 29, 2009 at 9:05pm CDT

Did anyone expect the deadline to be this active? What a week. Some more tidbits:

  • The Rangers signed their third-round selection, LHP Robbie Erlin, reports T.R. Sullivan at MLB.com.
  • Jayson Stark has an extensive breakdown of the Cliff Lee trade–the Cy Young pitcher they needed, not the one they necessarily wanted.
  • The Yankees have interest in Tigers OF Josh Anderson, says Danny Knobler at CBS Sports, and now Jim Leyland agrees, says Steve Kornacki at mlive.com.
  • John Fay at the Cincinnati Enquirer notes that in a very roundabout fashion, the Reds traded Paul O'Neill for Wladimir Balentien.
  • Mark Bowman at MLB.com reports that the Braves have been quiet on the trade front, and aren't pressured to make a big splash after the Cliff Lee deal. They've inquired on a few relievers that apparently aren't available.
  • Despite the Phils' acquisitions, the Marlins are still in it to win it, says Alden Gonzalez at MLB.com.
  • Fangraphs gives their analysis of the Freddy Sanchez and Jason Hirsh deals.
  • Todd Zolecki at MLB.com gets Phillie rival players' takes on the Lee deal.

Tigers DFA Josh Anderson

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 24, 2009 at 9:30am CDT

The Tigers designated outfielder Josh Anderson for assignment to make room for Carlos Guillen, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck. Anderson, 26, hit .242/.282/.315 with no homers in 74 games with the Tigers. He played all three outfield positions for the Tigers, and defended well in limited innings.

Tigers Acquire Josh Anderson

By Tim Dierkes | March 30, 2009 at 1:37pm CDT

According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Tigers acquired outfielder Josh Anderson from the Braves for minor league pitcher Rudy Darrow.

Darrow, 24, is a former college wrestler who is listed at 5'10", 180 lbs.  The Tommy John survivor uses a sidearm delivery to touch 94, and Baseball America suggests he could pitch in the Majors this year.  As such, it seems odd that the Tigers would trade him.

The speedy Anderson was unable to win the Braves' center field job, which presumably goes to Jordan Schafer now.
