Orioles Have Some Interest In Jarrod Washburn

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | February 9, 2010 at 3:49pm CDT

The Orioles have some interest in Jarrod Washburn, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. However, Morosi's source says that Scott Boras would have to lower his client's price "pretty far" for the Orioles to become serious bidders for Washburn.

We've been hearing for a while that Washburn would prefer to pitch for the Twins or Mariners. Playing in the AL East would be a difficult way for the lefty to re-establish his value.

The Orioles are unlikely to add Todd Wellemeyer, Braden Looper or John Smoltz, according to Morosi's source. Two clubs who are looking for bargain starters: the pitching-deep Blue Jays and the Mets.

If they sign Washburn, Chris Tillman wouldn’t be in the rotation…That wouldn’t be good.

“The Orioles are unlikely to add former Cardinals…” is what I read in my mind.

good point. I guess that rules out the Orioles trading for Albert Pujols.

      Joke.

Twins are out. The offer made to Washburn was before Pavano excepted arbitration. If he wants to pitch at all in 2010, he’d better lower his asking price big time. Scott Boras is up to his usual tricks of trying to swindel teams and get them on the hook for huge contracts so that he can line his pockets with cash. Only problem is, Washburn is not good.

Your inference that Boras is doing the talking in this particular instance couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Playing in the AL East would be a difficult way for the lefty to re-establish his value.”

For the record, Jarrod Washburn has a 3.73 ERA in 462.2 career innings against AL East teams. Washburn’s overall career ERA is 4.10.

Thanks for pointing that out. All too often on this site we get inundated with the mantra that the AL East is sooo tough and the AL West is for chumps.

As for Washburn, I would love to see him reunited with the Halos on a 1/$3m type deal. He provides insurance for the inevitable Kazmir/Santana injury. If the whole staff is healthy he slides into the bullpen.

At $3m he wouldn’t need to do much to justify the contract.
