Padres Designate Cesar Carrillo For Assignment

By Zachary Links | September 18, 2010 at 3:35pm CDT

The Padres have designated pitcher Cesar Carrillo for assignment, according to a team press release.  This marks the third time that the right-hander has been DFA'd this month.

San Diego first designated Carrillo for assignment on September 1st to create room on the 40-man roster.  He was then claimed by the Phillies who DFA'd him just days later.  The Padres picked him up once more on Wednesday only to designate him this afternoon.

The former first-round selection of the 2005 draft posted a 5.60 ERA with 5.7 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 27 Triple-A starts for the Padres' affiliate this season.

Oh my gosh. Wow. The Phillies should claim him and then dfa him a day later, then the Padres should claimhim and dfa him a day later, then the Phillies should claim him and then dfa him a day later, then the Padres should claim him and then dfa him a day later. Then the Phillies should keep him and then dfa him a day later. Then the Marlins should claim him and he will pitch great for them and prove to the Padres and Phillies that he’s not as worthless as they made him seem.

They aren’t DFA’ing him because they don’t like him… Lol. They both want him in their organizations, but don’t feel he’s worth a spot on their 40 man rosters, and I agree, he’s been pretty terrible. The guy has a ton of potential, but he’s a fringe reclamation project at this point in his career.

I would settle on half his salary or his frequent Flyer milles.

@SPAN: I HOPE so. I really liked this guy in college, and thought he was going to have a great big league career. It’s too bad he’s fallen off the way he has.

Definetly. I hope Carlos Gutierrez isn’t the next Cesar Carillo but I don’t think the door is officially closed on Carillo. Hopefully he will join a team next season thats either closer to home (Florida) or in another non-pressure situation somewhat like San Diego i.e. the Royals. Maybe the Jays should take a gamble.

Carillo has had problems coming back from TJ surgery. Therefore, the Jays need to pick him up. They have a great track record of getting their pitchers back on track after that type of surgery. They’ve done it with other teams former pitchers too. He’s tailor made for them as a cheap pick up.

There’s a lot of players that teams are going to try to slip through right now. GM’s, be vigilant!

By my count that makes an impressive 5 MLBTR headlines for Carrillo in 2010 … with perhaps one more to come before the season is out. I would say he’s far exceeded the over/under on his MLBTR headlines for 2010.
