Minor Moves: Cesar Carrillo

By edcreech | February 2, 2014 at 4:30pm CDT

Here are Sunday's minor moves from around MLB:

  • The Diamondbacks have signed right-hander Cesar Carrillo to a minor league contract, per the team's transactions page. Carrillo was the first player suspended in connection with the Biogenesis affair receiving a 100-game penalty last March while a member of the Tigers' minor league system. The 18th overall selection in the 2005 draft was released by Detroit upon completion of his suspension in August. The 29-year-old then signed with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League making nine starts (47 innings) and pitching to a 4.02 ERA, 4.2 K/9, and 5.9 BB/9.
  • Per MLBTR's DFA Tracker, there are four players currently in DFA limbo: Emilio Bonifacio (Royals), Everett Teaford (Royals), Chaz Roe (Rangers), and Brayan Villarreal (Red Sox).

Minor Moves: Cesar Carrillo, Boof Bonser

By Steve Adams | August 2, 2013 at 10:37pm CDT

Friday's rundown of minor moves from around the league…

  • The Tigers released 29-year-old righty Cesar Carrillo after he finished off a 100-game suspension, reports the Associated Press (via ESPN). He was the first player suspended in relation to the Biogenesis scandal.
  • The Indians announced that they activated right-hander Boof Bonser from the minor league disabled list and granted him his release (on Twitter). Bonser signed with Cleveland at the end of June. He appeared in three games with Triple-A Columbus, posting a 6.00 ERA with a 10-to-4 K/BB ratio in 15 innings. He last pitched in the Majors with Oakland in 2010, but he hasn't seen significant big league time since the mid-2000s with the Twins.
  • Five players are currently in DFA limbo: Joe Martinez of the Indians, Jason Bay of the Mariners, Brad Hawpe of the Angels, Yusmeiro Petit of the Giants and Ted Lilly of the Dodgers.

Tigers Sign Cesar Carrillo

By Mike Axisa | June 12, 2012 at 10:23pm CDT

Let's keep track of the day's minor moves right here.

  • The Tigers have signed right-hander Cesar Carrillo according to Brian Britten, the team's director of media relations (on Twitter). The 28-year-old spent part of last season with an independent league team. Carrillo was once considered a top prospect in the Padres' system, and his only big league experience came with them in 2009 — 13.06 ERA in three starts.

Astros Release Cesar Carrillo

By Mark Polishuk | April 29, 2011 at 5:53pm CDT

The Astros have released right-hander Cesar Carrillo, reports Greg Rajan of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times (via Twitter).  Carrillo was put on waivers by San Diego last September and claimed by Houston, but struggled (a 9.64 ERA in 9 1/3 innings) for Double-A Corpus Christi this season.  It's an unfortunate birthday present for Carrillo, who turns 27 today.

Carrillo was a first-round pick of the Padres (18th overall) in the 2005 amateur draft and was ranked as the 88th-best prospect in the game by Baseball America before the 2006 season.  Carrillo underwent Tommy John surgery in 2007, however, and never quite got back on track.  The right-hander has a career 5.14 ERA in 99 minor league games (93 of them starts) and made three starts for the Padres in 2009, allowing 15 earned runs and 12 walks in just 10 1/3 Major League innings.

Cesar Carrillo Clears Waivers

By Tim Dierkes | March 22, 2011 at 1:28pm CDT

Cesar Carrillo's journey will continue in Oklahoma City, as he's been outrighted and cleared waivers according to a tweet from MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.  Carrillo was claimed off waivers by the Astros from the Padres to conclude a tumultuous September for the right-hander.  A January trespassing arrest probably did not help Carrillo's stock.

Carrillo, 27 next month, was drafted by the Padres with the 18th overall pick in 2005 but needed Tommy John surgery soon after.  In various stints in the high minors in recent years, Carrillo's strikeout rate has been poor and he's been very hittable.  He last cracked a Baseball America Prospect Handbook before the '09 season, when the publication said "his stuff is still recovering" from the June '07 surgery.

Astros Claim Cesar Carrillo

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 22, 2010 at 2:35pm CDT

The Astros claimed Cesar Carrillo from the Padres, according to Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle. The Astros confirmed the move via press release and announced that Carrillo will not be joining the big league team.

This marks the second time this month that the Padres have lost the pitcher to a waiver claim after designating him for assignment. The Phillies claimed Carrillo on September 9th, but the Padres re-claimed him only to designate him for assignment a second time.

This time the Astros pounced on the 2005 first rounder. In 27 Triple A starts this year (all in the Padres organization), Carrillo had a 5.60 ERA with 5.7 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9. The 26-year-old debuted on last year’s Padres team but has not returned to the majors in 2010.

The Astros designated Edwin Maysonet for assignment to make room for Carrillo. Maysonet, a 28-year-old middle infielder, has not appeared in the major leagues this year and he has a .637 OPS in the minors.

Padres Designate Cesar Carrillo For Assignment

By Zachary Links | September 18, 2010 at 3:35pm CDT

The Padres have designated pitcher Cesar Carrillo for assignment, according to a team press release.  This marks the third time that the right-hander has been DFA'd this month.

San Diego first designated Carrillo for assignment on September 1st to create room on the 40-man roster.  He was then claimed by the Phillies who DFA'd him just days later.  The Padres picked him up once more on Wednesday only to designate him this afternoon.

The former first-round selection of the 2005 draft posted a 5.60 ERA with 5.7 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 27 Triple-A starts for the Padres' affiliate this season.

Padres Re-Claim Cesar Carrillo

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 15, 2010 at 1:39pm CDT

The Padres re-claimed Cesar Carrillo, according to MLB.com's Corey Brock (on Twitter). They designated Craig Italiano for assignment to make room for Carrillo, who was also recently designated for assignment by the Padres. The Phillies claimed the right-hander when he became available but they had to create roster space yesterday, so they designated Carrillo for assignment.

The Padres selected Carrillo in the first round of the 2005 draft, but he isn’t having much success in the minors. In 27 Triple A starts this year (none in the Philadelphia organization), Carrillo has a 5.60 ERA with 5.7 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9. The 26-year-old debuted on last year’s Padres team but has not returned to the majors in 2010.

This mirrors what happened between the Indians and Rockies a month ago. The Rockies claimed Wes Hodges from the Indians and lost him when Cleveland claimed him back two days later.

Phillies Designate Carrillo For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 13, 2010 at 8:00am CDT

The Phillies designated Cesar Carrillo for assignment, according to the MLB.com transactions page. It's the second time this month that Carrillo has been designated for assignment; the Padres cut the right-hander on September 1st only to see the Phillies claim him.

Carrillo, a 2005 first rounder, debuted on the 2009 Padres, but has not yet returned to the major leagues. In 27 Triple A starts this year, the 26-year-old has a 5.60 ERA with 5.7 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9.
