Yankees Designate De La Rosa, Claim Garrison

By Luke Adams 2 | September 9, 2010 at 5:43pm CDT

The Yankees designated Wilkin De La Rosa for assignment today in order to make room for Steve Garrison, who they claimed off waivers from the Padres, according to Mike Ashmore of the Hunterdon County Democrat (via Twitter).

Former Padres GM Kevin Towers had a hand in the Yankees' claim on Garrison, who was designated for assignment by San Diego on Monday. Brian Cashman told Chad Jennings of The Journal News that Towers "obviously was involved in that process," as someone familiar with the Padres' farm system. The left-handed Garrison struggled in his first Triple-A stint this year, but has had some success in the lower minors and will only turn 24 this weekend.

The removal of De La Rosa from the Yanks' 40-man roster comes just two weeks after the New York Post reported that MLB was investigating De La Rosa and Ivan Nova for allegedly injecting one another with B-12 shots. De La Rosa denied the Post's report, and according to Jennings, the Yankees are hoping that the 25-year-old clears waivers.

Are they related to Rafael Palmeiro or Miguel Tejada?

Garrison has some upside but his injury problems last 2 years really set him back. I think he could find his niche in the bullpen as a lefty on lefty guy

If he does that would be great. Boone Logan and Garrison we could finally get rid of Marte who I have been screaming at Cashman to get rid of every since they signed him his extension.

Agreed I’m always shaking when Marte pitches I just don’t trust him.

Get rid of him how, nobody would take him on for his very overpriced final year.

Yanks could eat most of his salary, but if they don’t want to go down that route, there’s always DFA and release. I don’t even want to hear the idea of Marte going any where near the Yanks young pitching.

Did you forget the 2009 WS that quickly? He’s good when he’s healthy, and you can never have enough middle relief depth. Not that long ago everyone was wanting Boone Logan gone and now look. They’re gonna pay the contract regardless there’s zero reason to get rid of him.

I never forget the Yankees WS. And I don’t really wanna see someone who is injured almost the whole season and hit by almost everyone while having a huge ERA, and then wait for the playoffs when he’s healthy and retires almost every batte he faces. Boone Logan is very capable of doing that too. I agree you can never have too much depth for middle reliever but Marte is just awful. No thanks

Do the Yankees have a passion for claiming unwanted Padres?

No, this was all Kevin Towers who has been working in the Yankees FO this year.

Did you miss the part where Kevin Towers is now a consultant for them?

Can someone please tell me what B12 is?! Is it some sort of steroid?

B12 is only a vitamin, but in injections it can be used with other drugs so they are checking to see if it is only B12.
