Giants Notes: Sabean, Bochy, Renteria

By Tim Dierkes | November 2, 2010 at 7:48am CDT

You just won the World Series.  What are you doing next?  A few notes from the Giants' celebration…

  • Giants president Larry Baer and owner Bill Neukom are expected to have discussions about extending the contracts of manager Bruce Bochy and GM Brian Sabean, writes Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News.  Both are under contract through 2011 with club options for '12.
  • World Series MVP Edgar Renteria remains undecided about playing next year, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.  Given the free agent market for shortstops, the 34-year-old would be able to find work.  He's already filed for free agency; the team buying out his $10.5MM club option for $500K is a formality.
  • The Giants' other free agents, all of whom already filed: Jose Guillen, Pat Burrell, Juan Uribe, Aubrey Huff, and Guillermo Mota.  They've got eight players eligible for arbitration: Andres Torres, Jonathan Sanchez, Ramon Ramirez, Mike Fontenot, Santiago Casilla, Cody Ross, Chris Ray, and Javier Lopez.

Isn’t Sabean, like uh, not a popular guy amongst Giants fans?

If someone asks you about Brian Sabean’s career, explain how he paid Edgar Renteria $18.5M to hit .259/.314/.344 over 2 yrs. And it worked.

How are all these guys filed for free agency already when they literally just won the world series last night?

technically, this year no player has to really file for free agency. it’s just done automatically.

Why, why, why??? Why extend your manager and GM when they’re essentially already under contract for another two years? How many other managers and GM’s didn’t make it two years after winning the big one? Bob Brenly comes to mind, as well as a few others I’m sure. Honestly, even if you give all the credit for the World Series to Bochy and Sabean, which would be ridiculous, why give them more years when they’ve already got enough?

I don’t get it either. The most they should is pick up their 2012 options. The Mets gave Minaya an extension after 2008 and it just kicked in this year. That’s worked out well.

Yep, doesn’t make sense to me either. Reminds me of extending Howard when he still had 2 years left on his old deal. Bet Amaro’s regretting that already.

I’m a lifelong Giants fan. I’m so happy we finally won. Great feeling. I’m now pulling for the Cubs or Indians. I would love to see them end their drought as well.

I have a question for Giants fans and followers. What’s the deal with Sandoval? He goes from a near MVP type season to can’t even get in the lineup as DH the last couple games of the WS. Assuming the Giants re-sign Huff is Sandoval available? Hasn’t his trade value been seriously diminished?

Speaking as a Brewer fan, if the Brewers deal Fielder, I’d be interested in talking to Giants about Sandoval. Heck, they wouldn’t have to order a new uniform, just change the name on the back.

Too many trips to Taco Bell. Seriously, Panda has a weight problem and he will be working on it over the off season. I really doubt the Giants would consider trading him at this point. Now if he comes into Spring Training and hasn’t dropped any weight that may be another story.

The league also figured him out. Even in his great season, the guy NEVER walked, so most teams I assume just stopped throwing him strikes.

That had a lot to do with it, although over the course of his great 2009 his patience improved. His walk rate was actually around average that year, amazingly. It got worse again in 2010, but even on stuff in the strike zone he wasn’t making the same kind of solid contact anymore. It seems to be mental, as were his throwing troubles at 3B at the end of the year. I don’t know what the answer is, but I hope he can turn it around.

      Now that’s funny, and true.

Several reasons, so I’ll try to break them down.

The first was definitely a conditioning issue, as others have mentioned. Right now, he is not in shape to play a full season. He’s already outgrowing 3rd, and there’s been plenty of talk about moving him to first full-time. Of course, that would mean he needs to redevelop some offensive value that would be worth a spot at first base.

Second, and more importantly, he underwent a divorce during the season. You can kind of tell where the mental issues began to set in, as he tore it up in April then simply dropped off. He gained back some momentum in August, but as I recall he had to travel overseas to finalize his divorce proceedings. It’s tough for any guy to concentrate on his job when he’s going through one of the top 3 most stressful events in anyone’s life.

Third, and this is a rather ambiguous one, but he completely forgot how to hit from the right side and away from home. Seriously, his splits are just mind-boggling if you look them up. I’d say he should seriously consider batting lefty full time, but that’s just me. The better hitting at home could possibly be explained by better rest in a home series, which ties back to issue #1 with conditioning.

Last but not least, his BABIP dropped significantly from ’09, suggesting that either he had an exceptionally lucky season then or had an unlucky season in 2010. Of course, with his well-documented lack of patience at the plate, he’s clearly not hitting the ball as hard as he did last season. But as a Giants fan, I’m hopeful that 2010 was full of bad breaks for him.

All this just means that 2011 won’t necessarily be a break-out season for him. He’s going to have to work hard in the off-season and not let the Giants’ “Operation Panda” (a horrible marketing gimmick) be more a publicity stunt than an actual regimen to condition himself better.

As I said though, I believe Giants fans are hopeful for a bounce-back season from the Panda.

Funny how you win a world series then your agent files for free agency while youre celebrating with your teammates ?
“this is the best team / group of guys I played with” many players said
We’ll see how true that is when the offers ( $$$$ ) come in.
If the Giants want to contend they need Huff, Ross, Burrell (despite his Ks in the WS, he can hit ) Uribe , J. Lopez
If Renteria walks..Sandoval will get another shot to prove his 2nd full season was just an off year…maybe Mike Fontenot will stick around
If they dont resign these guys we’ll have a 2/3 outfield of Rowand & DeRosa again and we already know what that’s like – one cant hit consistently, one sits on the DL for the remaining 150 games…
Ishikawa and Nate have yet to show they are everyday players

no actually 2/3 of the OF would be Ross & Torres. Then you could have a platoon at RF. Burrell should come back, but just as a backup who starts sparingly, and pinch-hits frequently.

In June I posted someplace that I wanted Bochy and Sabean fired. This is significant only because I had previously given Sabean a huge benefit of doubt due to the ownership defined constraints he was probably working with during the Bonds era. But, this year I felt they switched into “win-now” mode too early and the development of the pitching staff was going to get wasted. I felt Bochy was TOO loyal to veterans like Rowand and Molina and that was going to run this season into the ground.

Well, clearly we did not switch back into “win-now” mode too early. Bochy seems to have known the youngsters were inadequate because when he got some that weren’t, he ran them out there, and see what happened?

I for one know when I am wrong, and admit it. Very gladly today!!

    Oh, did I mention? YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some more new youngsters are coming down the pipe next year 1B/OF Brandon Belt. I think the Giants will make a splash at the free agent market in a good way and HOPEFULLY Sabean has learned his lesson about overpaying free agents. Anyway congratulations to an awesome organization finally bringing a championship to San Francisco. And there are many more to come with that pitching.

Giants win it all! I know Uribe is being considered to be resigned. Brandon Belt maybe the future at 1B. Huff could be resigned and Brandon Belt may get his chance in the big leagues after all.

I hope the Giants bring Huff back with a 2-year deal, Uribe with a 2-yr deal and offer Burrell a 1-year, incentive laden contract ($3M guaranteed, lots of incentives). I don’t see any reason to not bring back any of the arbitration guys. Maybe Fontenot is the odd man out with De Rosa and Burriss back from injury.

If the Giants want to make a splash and improve, let Burrell walk and go after Crawford to play LF. He would set record for triples playing in AT&T 81 games a year. He would also represent a mean #3 hitter in the lineup.

What about Affeldt? Isn’t he a free agent as well?
