The offseason isn't far away, so the Rangers are thinking ahead, even though they can continue their bid for a World Series title with a win against the Giants tonight. Here's the latest on the AL Champs:
- GM Jon Daniels says the Rangers may be able to increase payroll next year, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter). The Rangers intend to bid on Cliff Lee, who won't come cheap, so it's not surprising to hear that the club has the flexibility to spend.
- Yankees people are angry that Rangers owner Chuck Greenberg called Yankees fans "an embarrassment," according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter). Heyman says the Yankees will return fire after the World Series. The best way of retaliating would probably be to lure Lee to the Bronx if you ask me.
- Daniels left no doubt that the Rangers will sign manager Ron Washington to a multi-year deal after the World Series, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (on Twitter).

You may have misread that. Chuck Greenberg called Yankee fans “apathetic and violent, and embarrassing.” There is no need to even be talking about the Yankees. The Yankees aren’t playing the Rangers right now and the Rangers are down 3-1 in the series. Shouldn’t Greenberg be more concerned about his own team and their idiotic fans doing the claw and antlers after last night’s loss? I bet the Yankees just say something like “We are disappointed in Mr. Greenberg’s comments about our fan base. We have not had any violent incidents at the stadium and we increased security for the ALCS. We hope that one bad apple does not spoil the bunch”

Funny that Yankee ownership is angry at Greenberg for pointing out how vile and disgusting that fan base can be. The fans spit on people and yet Greenberg is the problem for bringing it up? Similar to Yankee ownership being more upset with the coverage of steroid use rather than all the Yankee players who use steroids.

Maybe you misunderstood something. Greenberg, a part owner of the Rangers, called Yankee fans violent, apathetic, and an embarrassment to baseball. Even if you hate the Yankees you have to admit it’s both silly for an owner to say stuff like that, and dumb to trash talk the fans of a team you beat a week ago when you’re down 3-1 in the World Series.

Yankee “people” are really sensitive if they are really that mad by a statement made by the Rangers owner. They sound like the weak kid with rich parents who won’t defend himself so his parents buy him something the other kids don’t have to make up for it and make him feel better. The fact they are going to “return fire” is childish.

It’s not like Lee isn’t already a multi-millionaire and going to land what in all probability is going to be significantly more than a hundred million bucks. I won’t play the “let’s pretend I know Cliff Lee’s mind” game, but I will say that I’d easily leave money on the table to avoid a place that treated my wife so poorly just because she was married to somebody on the opposing team.
It might not be fair, it might be painting all Yankees fans with the same brush because of what one person or a few people did, but that’s life. It’s part of the intangibles of making a decision that is going to affect my life, and the life of my family, for at least the next five years. A “fan” assaulting my wife is a pretty big black mark.

Ask the Orioles, Rays, Mariners, or the Royals organizations if Yankees fans are apathetic when they show up wearing Yankees garb anytime NY plays in their stadiums. He should take a closer look at his attendance figures when NY comes to Arlington and compare numbers.
As for violent, that’s real crap and he should know better than to say that. No one was assaulted or attacked during the playoffs, Kristen Lee even said that she never felt threatened or afraid during her time there. She was not spit upon or doused with beer. That did happen, but to other people in the Texas contingent, which in inexcusable for sure. Fights break out in every ballpark throughout the season, and NY is no different than anywhere else. Greenberg should apologize to the Yankees fans, not to the ones in NY, but to the 10,000 or so who show up at Rangers games and spend their money in his ball park, for being an immature bumpkin.

Figure that the Yanks will offer Lee in the range of $ 150 million over six years, which is more per annum than CC, but not quite the $ 161 MM overall contract. $ 25 MM Per year would make Lee the second highest paid player in the game, and the highest paid pitcher (annual salary). That would also mean that the Yankees have the five highest paid players in the game.
Teams other than the Yankees don’t give out contracts in excess of $ 20 million. The only other one in 2011 is Santana’s deal with the Mets which is just over that amount, and the Tigers will pay Cabrera $ 22 MM per season at the end of his deal. Of course, the Rangers did pay A Roid that huge $ 252 MM deal over 10 years, and we all know how that turned out, but I really don’t see them being able to match this one. I really wish people would stop w/ the hypocrisy. If IBM was offering you $250,000 and Apple was paying you $200,000 and wasn’t willing/able to match it then most people would take it. No why? Because if they were paying you $200,000 but could find someone to as good of a job but willing to do it for $150,000 then chances are they would fire you w/o a second thought.

Agreed with most everyone on here. There are certainly moronic fans in every fanbase, and it’s a (darn) shame to see the respectable, true-hearted fans get overlooked every single time. I sure hope this wasn’t a low blow to try to get into the mind of Cliff Lee, because now is not the time. Focus on the World Series first, and then focus on getting your star pitcher locked up. Get your priorities in line, son.

here’s a thought… actually click on the link and read what the twitter post actually says… the comment Chuck Greenberg had made was on radio, meaning he 99.5% most likely did not just come out and say “Yankees fans are bad”. He was most likely answering a question that was asked of him about the incident involving the players’ families at Yankee stadium.
Don’t lose respect for Greenberg just because he answers a question on a radio show and you dont have the decency to find out the facts.
You miss the point. I’m sure there’s more context to his statement but regardless of whether or not he volunteered the comment or if it was extracted from him as a question, he still shouldn’t lump 100% of a fan base based on the actions of .05%.

Typical crap. I’m a Yankee fan and I’ve had good experiences at Fenway, the only place that was rough, honestly, was Shea Stadium, the toilet it is. I was spat on and berated after a Yankee loss. And believe me when I say I’m a non-assuming, quiet, sober guy. Point being, as has been said numerous times, every fanbase has bottom-feeders and you can’t judge an entire group of people based on a few pieces of garbage. Especially when you’re an MLB owner… that’s just unprofessional and embarrassing.

As a Rangers fan, I hate the timing of it…and honestly, I’m not sure how he could think about anything else yesterday besides game 5 (I know I didn’t think about anything else all day). Yankee fans are abused outside the confines of Yankee Stadium… I know because I’m a 3rd gen Yankee fan living in Dallas. In the ALCS in Arlington I was cursed at, booed, had food thrown at me, etc. It’s all good when Yankee fans get treated this way, but if someone else is treated like this by a Yankee fan then venom is spewed at us from everywhere. I would like for the Yankees to take the high road, but honestly I am ticked off and don’t blame them if they say anything. Also the Yankees have already taken the high road by giving a section of their stadium to Chuck Greenberg in the ALCS so his fans could sit there and declined to comment yesterday so it wouldn’t distract from the world series. His comments provide fodder and courage to Yankee haters everywhere and the abuse will get out of hand… Something needs to be said by MLB and Greenberg needs to be put in his place.
I can understand that. Greenberg has developed a penchant to speak his mind a little more often than he probably should. I’m sure someone from MLB will say something to him about it, if not fine him. As far as your experiences…I think the Yankees get magnified b/c they’re the Yankees. They spend big, put the start studded team on the field, play in NY, always get press time. So everything they do is magnified. I do agree that every ballpark has their share of low life fans though. It’s unfortunate, but it happens. Especially in high emotion games in the playoffs
I agree for sure… It’s definitely magnified because it’s in New York. That story about Cliff Lee’s wife probably wouldn’t have been written if it were anywhere else. Also, I didn’t even complain about what happened to me in Arlington until I heard this story and everyone started doggin Yanks fans. I mostly expected to be received harshly because I’m wearing Yanks stuff at the Rangers ballpark and that’s just how it goes. But for an owner of a team to insult the fans of a cooperative and classy organization just shows that Greenberg has issues with class himself. A lot of people point fingers at the Yankees and their fans and turn around and do the same stuff.

One of the first things I thought about was how mad Nolan was gonna be haha I don’t believe that the Rangers are classless for one second. All you have to do is watch how the players and coaching staff conduct themselves to see that they are full of class. It’s usually the guys in the organization that don’t know much about baseball that mouth off haha

I’m still trying to figure out if their pitching was really that good or if the Rangers bats just went into hibernation? The lineup could use a couple more big bats to protect Josh and Vlad. Young and Kinsler aren’t the feared hitters we need.
Why is this so shocking? Yankees fans at their games have always been an embarrassment to that organization. Many are loudmouthed drunkards who turn on their own players if they have an off game or more. They were fleeing the games with the Rangers as soon as their team started losing! What the hell!!?? Guess they don’t believe in comebacks or maybe they just wanted to beat the traffic home.
