Rangers Notes: Payroll, Lee, Washington

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 1, 2010 at 4:11pm CDT

The offseason isn't far away, so the Rangers are thinking ahead, even though they can continue their bid for a World Series title with a win against the Giants tonight. Here's the latest on the AL Champs:

  • GM Jon Daniels says the Rangers may be able to increase payroll next year, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter). The Rangers intend to bid on Cliff Lee, who won't come cheap, so it's not surprising to hear that the club has the flexibility to spend.
  • Yankees people are angry that Rangers owner Chuck Greenberg called Yankees fans "an embarrassment," according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter). Heyman says the Yankees will return fire after the World Series. The best way of retaliating would probably be to lure Lee to the Bronx if you ask me.
  • Daniels left no doubt that the Rangers will sign manager Ron Washington to a multi-year deal after the World Series, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (on Twitter).

why would yankee people be mad if Greenberg called his own team’s fans an embarrasment? what influence would that have on the yankees? Im confused…

You may have misread that. Chuck Greenberg called Yankee fans “apathetic and violent, and embarrassing.” There is no need to even be talking about the Yankees. The Yankees aren’t playing the Rangers right now and the Rangers are down 3-1 in the series. Shouldn’t Greenberg be more concerned about his own team and their idiotic fans doing the claw and antlers after last night’s loss? I bet the Yankees just say something like “We are disappointed in Mr. Greenberg’s comments about our fan base. We have not had any violent incidents at the stadium and we increased security for the ALCS. We hope that one bad apple does not spoil the bunch”

Funny that Yankee ownership is angry at Greenberg for pointing out how vile and disgusting that fan base can be. The fans spit on people and yet Greenberg is the problem for bringing it up? Similar to Yankee ownership being more upset with the coverage of steroid use rather than all the Yankee players who use steroids.

Steinbrenner family are all the same. Anything goes as long as you win. Spit, cheat, lie…it doesn’t matter to us. Just be sure you don’t bring it up.

Maybe you misunderstood something. Greenberg, a part owner of the Rangers, called Yankee fans violent, apathetic, and an embarrassment to baseball. Even if you hate the Yankees you have to admit it’s both silly for an owner to say stuff like that, and dumb to trash talk the fans of a team you beat a week ago when you’re down 3-1 in the World Series.

Yankee “people” are really sensitive if they are really that mad by a statement made by the Rangers owner. They sound like the weak kid with rich parents who won’t defend himself so his parents buy him something the other kids don’t have to make up for it and make him feel better. The fact they are going to “return fire” is childish.

Not saying the Ranger owner is in the right for opening his mouth either. Both sides need to shut it and move on.

*shrugs* Maybe. I wouldn’t join a team where somebody spat on my wife. I don’t care if fans heckle opposing players–hell, I like it–but family is well beyond the limits. And spitting, well, that’s assault — literally.

It’s not like Lee isn’t already a multi-millionaire and going to land what in all probability is going to be significantly more than a hundred million bucks. I won’t play the “let’s pretend I know Cliff Lee’s mind” game, but I will say that I’d easily leave money on the table to avoid a place that treated my wife so poorly just because she was married to somebody on the opposing team.

It might not be fair, it might be painting all Yankees fans with the same brush because of what one person or a few people did, but that’s life. It’s part of the intangibles of making a decision that is going to affect my life, and the life of my family, for at least the next five years. A “fan” assaulting my wife is a pretty big black mark.

This whole thing with Greenberg should be seen for what it is. He’s just another knucklehead fan that is saying what any other dope would post on a site like this.
He’s new to big time sports and hasn’t grown into position in which he now finds himself. Just look at the threads that have been written by all the different fans on this site since the incident took place 2 weeks ago. Not much difference, except that he’s an owner.
Obviously he’s wrong about what he’s said, Yankees fans apathetic? Hardly. Almost 4 million fans come to the Stadium every year. They even travel well and have fans throughout the entire country. Ask the Orioles, Rays, Mariners, or the Royals organizations if Yankees fans are apathetic when they show up wearing Yankees garb anytime NY plays in their stadiums. He should take a closer look at his attendance figures when NY comes to Arlington and compare numbers.

As for violent, that’s real crap and he should know better than to say that. No one was assaulted or attacked during the playoffs, Kristen Lee even said that she never felt threatened or afraid during her time there. She was not spit upon or doused with beer. That did happen, but to other people in the Texas contingent, which in inexcusable for sure. Fights break out in every ballpark throughout the season, and NY is no different than anywhere else. Greenberg should apologize to the Yankees fans, not to the ones in NY, but to the 10,000 or so who show up at Rangers games and spend their money in his ball park, for being an immature bumpkin.
You’ll notice that his partner, the professional hasn’t uttered a word on the matter. He’s gone to the games, cheered his team, drank his beer and conducted himself like an adult. That’s why Nolan Ryan is a Pro and Chuck Greenberg is an amateur

I will say this, Phillies fans have the worst reputation in baseball BUT Yankee fans aren’t a heckuva lot better.

Go to YouTube and search “Yankees Bleacher Creatures YMCA” and you’ll see how embarrassing and disgusting they can be. Worst of all, the behavior was repeated every game by the same group of fans and the Yankees did NOTHING to put a stop to it … until recently when the videos went viral and everyone came down on the organization for allowing it.

Figure that the Yanks will offer Lee in the range of $ 150 million over six years, which is more per annum than CC, but not quite the $ 161 MM overall contract. $ 25 MM Per year would make Lee the second highest paid player in the game, and the highest paid pitcher (annual salary). That would also mean that the Yankees have the five highest paid players in the game.

Teams other than the Yankees don’t give out contracts in excess of $ 20 million. The only other one in 2011 is Santana’s deal with the Mets which is just over that amount, and the Tigers will pay Cabrera $ 22 MM per season at the end of his deal. Of course, the Rangers did pay A Roid that huge $ 252 MM deal over 10 years, and we all know how that turned out, but I really don’t see them being able to match this one. If they don’t, then no other team will, but that doesn’t mean that Lee will take the money and run. Once you get past $ 10 million or so, WTH does it really matter?

Joe Mauer starting in 2011 will earn $23 per. Todd Helton earns $23 mil in 2012 (changed to signing bonus, salary and $13 mil defered). Ryan Howard makes $25 mil per from 2014-2016. Those are ones I can think of.

Vernon made $ 15,687,500 in 2010, which was my point of reference.
There are a few other players due to get raises. If the Yanks go to $ 25 mil per year, the Rangers will be stretching the budget to match that. In their favor is that they have the largest single team market and an ownership group that knows what to do with it.

2 is still more than 1 right? As long as most other things are equal, I’ll take 2.

I really wish people would stop w/ the hypocrisy. If IBM was offering you $250,000 and Apple was paying you $200,000 and wasn’t willing/able to match it then most people would take it. No why? Because if they were paying you $200,000 but could find someone to as good of a job but willing to do it for $150,000 then chances are they would fire you w/o a second thought.

It is also a much riskier deal for the Rangers. If Lee should suffer some kind of serious injury and miss a lot of time/become ineffective, while it would be a blow to the Yankees they would ultimately just write it off and look elsewhere (ie Pavano). If it should happen to the Rangers, that much payroll tied up in a non-producing player would be devastating to the team for years.

They’d have to figure in the cost of insurance. Fortunately, Lee has a good health history, so they could get a policy on him to cover about half of his contract, but it would still be very expensive.

Greenberg and Ryan just spent a boatload of money to buy the team, and have aquired another boatload of money from a cable deal. Please let’s not start crying small market vs Big market crap already!

Cheap shot by Greenberg, unnecessary. When your team is in the Series the sole focus should be the Series.

Exactly. If he wanted to say this then that’s his choice, but I think he said it at a dumb time. His team might be playing it’s last baseball game of the year in a couple of hours. He should have said this after Game 3 of the ALCS

You’d think the owner of a team whose down 3-1 in the World Series and whose best player is about to enter free agency and demand a monstrous salary would have more pressing things to focus on than the fan base of another team whose no longer in the playoffs. The irony lies in the fact that he’s essentially showing blatant prejudice by calling the entire yankee fan base classless yet he himself is judging a vast group of people based off the actions of a few.

Agreed with most everyone on here. There are certainly moronic fans in every fanbase, and it’s a (darn) shame to see the respectable, true-hearted fans get overlooked every single time. I sure hope this wasn’t a low blow to try to get into the mind of Cliff Lee, because now is not the time. Focus on the World Series first, and then focus on getting your star pitcher locked up. Get your priorities in line, son.

While he may have meant for it to convince Cliff Lee to stay it may also backfire on him. Cliff Lee may say this guy isn’t worried about the team but more the Yankees and bashing them and showed the class he has. Then again who knows only Cliff Lees family probably knows what he wants to do or is leaning towards.

Alright, before I say this, I’m a Yankee fan. Now, I will agree that Yankee fans are undoubtedly one of the most rude and disrispectful fans in baseball. However you people that applaud this need to get this through your heads:1.) It’s not his business to worry about another team’s fans. There is no reason to bash them, no matter how disrispectful they are. It’s not your place to bash them, it’s actually really unprofessional-like, and classless.2.) I don’t think you need to worry about Yankee fans when your own team is down 3-1 at the World Series. You have many more pressing matters to attend to, and worrying about another team’s fans while your own team is on the brink of elimination facing one of the game’s best pitchers is not something you really do as a baseball owner. And again, people who think owners should bash the Yankees more, there’s no need for any bias here. Just because you hate the Yankees and want to bash them, doesen’t mean everyone else has to. Every fan base has moronic and rude fans, what if another owner just decided to attack your team? What would be your defense? Certainly not what I just said.

EDIT: I have gained alot of respect for the Rangers ownership and was happy for them even when they beat the Yankees, but if/when the Rangers lose the World Series, I will have lost alot of that respect for Chuck Greenberg.

here’s a thought… actually click on the link and read what the twitter post actually says… the comment Chuck Greenberg had made was on radio, meaning he 99.5% most likely did not just come out and say “Yankees fans are bad”. He was most likely answering a question that was asked of him about the incident involving the players’ families at Yankee stadium.

Don’t lose respect for Greenberg just because he answers a question on a radio show and you dont have the decency to find out the facts.

You miss the point. I’m sure there’s more context to his statement but regardless of whether or not he volunteered the comment or if it was extracted from him as a question, he still shouldn’t lump 100% of a fan base based on the actions of .05%.

You sound like Pailin bashing the “Gotcha” media. The media puts the microphone in front of you. The “interviewee” spouts the stupid comments that come back to bite them in the end. “Gotcha” media means “I gotcha on tape saying something stupid”.

To give his comment better context, here is what was said:
    —————————–
Chuck Greenberg’s comments during an interview with a Dallas radio station echoed remarks made by Lee’s wife, Kristen, who said she was treated rudely by the Yankee Stadium crowd, and seemed to be a calculated attempt to keep that incident from being forgotten as Texas tries to convince Lee that it would be a better fit in 2011.

Although Greenberg apologized hours later, first in phone calls to Yankee executives, and then in a public statement, the assertion he was making about behavior in the Bronx still remained. “I think our fans have been great,” Greenberg said in the radio interview on KESN-FM (103.3). “I think particularly in Game 3 of the World Series they just blew away anything I’ve seen in any venue during the postseason. I thought Yankee fans, frankly, were awful. They were either violent or apathetic, neither of which is good. So I thought Yankee fans were by far the worst of any I’ve seen in the postseason. I thought they were an embarrassment.”

Not surprisingly, Greenberg’s statements did not sit well with the Yankees, who nevertheless did not forcefully respond. But they held back only because they were adhering to longstanding guidelines from the commissioner’s office to not do anything to distract from the World Series, particularly on days when games are being played.

Hours after going on radio, Greenberg retreated, calling both Hal Steinbrenner, the Yankees’ managing general partner, and Randy Levine, the Yankees’ president, to apologize for his remarks.

Greenberg then issued a formal apology in which he stated that he “unfairly and inaccurately disparaged fans of the New York Yankees.’’

“Those remarks were inappropriate,’’ the statement added. “Yankees fans are among the most passionate and supportive in all of baseball.’’

Whether the Greenberg apology will be enough to appease the Yankees, and particularly, Levine, who is intensely protective of the Yankees’ brand and relishes the chance to defend it in public, remains to be seen.

Typical crap. I’m a Yankee fan and I’ve had good experiences at Fenway, the only place that was rough, honestly, was Shea Stadium, the toilet it is. I was spat on and berated after a Yankee loss. And believe me when I say I’m a non-assuming, quiet, sober guy. Point being, as has been said numerous times, every fanbase has bottom-feeders and you can’t judge an entire group of people based on a few pieces of garbage. Especially when you’re an MLB owner… that’s just unprofessional and embarrassing.

I have to think the only reason Greenberg made the comments was to use as a negotiating ploy for Cliff Lee. As a Rangers fan, I hate the timing of it…and honestly, I’m not sure how he could think about anything else yesterday besides game 5 (I know I didn’t think about anything else all day). Other than that, I don’t know what he intended to accomplish by making these remarks publicly. Maybe he just wants to have his player’s wife’s back? Idk

He did apologize though. I’m hoping the Yankees take the high road here and let this drop so we can move on. I don’t think Greenberg was in the right by making the comments, but verbal spats are pointless and petty. Both teams have bigger fish to fry than spending time berating each other’s classiness

Yankee fans are abused outside the confines of Yankee Stadium… I know because I’m a 3rd gen Yankee fan living in Dallas. In the ALCS in Arlington I was cursed at, booed, had food thrown at me, etc. It’s all good when Yankee fans get treated this way, but if someone else is treated like this by a Yankee fan then venom is spewed at us from everywhere. I would like for the Yankees to take the high road, but honestly I am ticked off and don’t blame them if they say anything. Also the Yankees have already taken the high road by giving a section of their stadium to Chuck Greenberg in the ALCS so his fans could sit there and declined to comment yesterday so it wouldn’t distract from the world series. His comments provide fodder and courage to Yankee haters everywhere and the abuse will get out of hand… Something needs to be said by MLB and Greenberg needs to be put in his place.

I can understand that. Greenberg has developed a penchant to speak his mind a little more often than he probably should. I’m sure someone from MLB will say something to him about it, if not fine him. He’s a new owner who’s in uncharted territory as far as PR goes, and probably got a little too excited about everything the team is doing. Hopefully he can just be put in his place, learn a lesson from it and move on. And I think he will…b/c he doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who tries to start controversy

As far as your experiences…I think the Yankees get magnified b/c they’re the Yankees. They spend big, put the start studded team on the field, play in NY, always get press time. So everything they do is magnified. I do agree that every ballpark has their share of low life fans though. It’s unfortunate, but it happens. Especially in high emotion games in the playoffs

I agree for sure… It’s definitely magnified because it’s in New York. That story about Cliff Lee’s wife probably wouldn’t have been written if it were anywhere else. Also, I didn’t even complain about what happened to me in Arlington until I heard this story and everyone started doggin Yanks fans. I mostly expected to be received harshly because I’m wearing Yanks stuff at the Rangers ballpark and that’s just how it goes. But for an owner of a team to insult the fans of a cooperative and classy organization just shows that Greenberg has issues with class himself. A lot of people point fingers at the Yankees and their fans and turn around and do the same stuff.

Yea, it does come off as being petty and hypocritical. I rolled my eyes when I first read about it yesterday. Especially considering the timing of it…I can’t say the Yankees and their fans were the first thing on my mind yesterday. Lol

I don’t think these comments alone will be an indicator of the kind of person/owner Greenberg is/will be though. If he makes a habit of stuff like this, then you could call him an unclassy guy. My biggest fear is that people will read stuff like that and associate the Rangers as being an unclassy organization…which I don’t think is true. I’m sure Nolan Ryan wasn’t pleased about it. I would think/hope he will learn from this and not make comments like this again

One of the first things I thought about was how mad Nolan was gonna be haha I don’t believe that the Rangers are classless for one second. All you have to do is watch how the players and coaching staff conduct themselves to see that they are full of class. It’s usually the guys in the organization that don’t know much about baseball that mouth off haha

I’m still trying to figure out if their pitching was really that good or if the Rangers bats just went into hibernation? The lineup could use a couple more big bats to protect Josh and Vlad. Young and Kinsler aren’t the feared hitters we need.

Why is this so shocking? Yankees fans at their games have always been an embarrassment to that organization. Many are loudmouthed drunkards who turn on their own players if they have an off game or more. They were fleeing the games with the Rangers as soon as their team started losing! What the hell!!?? Guess they don’t believe in comebacks or maybe they just wanted to beat the traffic home.
