Vazquez Would Like To Pitch For Marlins

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 18, 2010 at 4:05pm CDT

Javier Vazquez has told associates that he’d like to pitch for the Marlins, according to Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The right-hander would like to return to the National League and Florida has added appeal, since Miami is relatively close to Puerto Rico, his home country.

Vazquez has become the Marlins’ top pitching target, but they may not be able to afford him. Rodriguez hears that Vazquez has received some offers that could price him out of the Marlins’ grasp. After struggling through the 2010 season, Vazquez wasn’t expecting to see offers like the ones he’s getting, though it's unclear what those offers actually look like.

Why did you post this as two different names…? And why do you think Sanchez and Nolasco would get anything but laughter from Kevin Towers?

Add four players to that deal and maybe then you’ll get Upton. Yesterday’s “speculation” from a GM that Morrison and Nolasco would get it done is absolutely laughable.

I don’t see a problem with Nolasco and Gaby but that will not even come close to getting him. I’m guessing Nolasco, Gaby, Kyle Skipworth and Chad James and maybe one more prospect. Dbacks get a good Starter and solid all around 1B and two of the Marlins top prospects.

I think you have to take out Sanchez and add in Morrison, even in that package, unless Arizona specifically likes Gaby better for some reason.

If Javier Vazquez gets multi-million dollars and/or multi-million years, then shame on that GM.

It isn’t a guarantee he will return to his form of 2 years ago if he returns to the NL. He should not be seeing grand offers at all.

So you think Vazquez should sign a minor league deal because of one bad season?

      Reply
      • Mel

Yeah, pretty thin market. Him getting a multi-year offer shouldn’t be all that surprising, he’s an innings eater that almost never gets hurt, and he’s always been better in the NL.

But I’d be worried about his dip in velocity…

I feel he’s a candidate for a one year deal, worth something like 10 million. This guy has been a relatively consistent pitcher his entire career, and one bad year isn’t going to hurt him as much as you imply.

10 million ? After last year and his own admissions that his arm is having serious problem? I would bet Vasquez is going to have rotator cuff surgery before next season is over guarenteed. His velocity drop and command problems are just to blatent indicators that something is seriously wrong. I hope im wrong and the Marlins sign him, but hopefully they reduce their risk by offering a more incentive laden contract.

Thats what i was thinking. The Marlins could keep Nuez and aquire a couple of pices threw FA. Correct me if im wrong but the marlins look like this so far…
        C J.Buck, J.Baker
        1b G.Sanchez, L.Morrison
        2b/3b O.Infante/C.Coghlan
        SS Hanly Ramirez
        OF M.Stantion
        OF E.Bonifacio
        OFL.Morrison

        And for Rotaion
        J.Johnson
        R.Nolasco
        A.Sanchez
        C.Volstad
        A.Sanabia

Now say they Aquirre J.Vasquez and a Outfielder lets say R.Ankil (he might fit IMO)
Then E.Bonifacio becomes a Super Utillity. And posability A.Sanabia to the pen.
Then in my opinion the Marlens will be set. With there pen 2.

they are still saying dominquez is in the mix for third. so, it would be gaby at first, infante at second, hanley, and dominguez to complete the infield with buck catching. they are either thinking coghlan or boni in center so far, depending on dominguez, with stanton and morrison in the corners.

if we get vasquez or pavano, i would assume sanabia goes to the pen as he has been there in the minors before.

i just think they need a starting pitcher to fill out their rotation. it scares me that coghlan is out in cf, if that happens, but his bat is needed. a trade off for lack of cf defense i suppose. however, the defense everywhere else is improved.

JUSTIN UPTON FOR GABBY SANCHEZ, RICKY NOLASCO AND A PROSPECT OR TWO WOULD GET THE DEAL DONE. ESPECIALLY IF THE D BACKS TRADE REYNOLDS…WHICH I THINK THEY WILL….SO GABBY WOULD PLAY 3RD…….I THINK THIS WOULD BE GREAT FOR BOTH SIDES.

yeah, i agree. i think it ludicrous to strip a thin team of their talent for one player that is more about potential than proven thus far.

I thought Cashman was going to offer him either a 20 year, $20 million a year contract to comeback to the yankees or a 30 year, $1 trillion contract to stay the f-out of New York
