A’s, Breslow Avoid Arbitration

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 25, 2011 at 1:33pm CDT

The A's avoided arbitration with Craig Breslow and agreed to a one-year, $1.4MM deal, according to MLB.com's Jane Lee (Twitter link). The A's had filed at $1.55MM and Breslow has countered with $1.15MM, so the lefty's new deal is worth slightly more than the $1.35MM midpoint.

Breslow, 30, logged 74 2/3 innings for the A's last year, posting a 3.01 ERA with 8.6 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9. The five-year veteran generally induces more fly balls than ground balls; last year his fly ball rate (55.8%) nearly doubled his ground ball rate (29.6%).

Breslow majored in molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale before the Brewers took him in the 26th round of the 2002 draft.

As MLBTR's Arb Tracker shows, all of Oakland's arbitration eligible players are now under contract for 2011.

Odd that Breslow was asking for less than the A’s offered. I guess some guys just arent greedy….

Looking at the arb tracker, it is indeed a mistake.

Obviously it’s just been typed backwards. I’m sure they’ll correct it soon enough.

Due to a tragic accident in a molecular biophysics lab, Breslow has a crippling phobia of any figure that contains the numbers 50-59. The A’s knew this, and used it to get Breslow to accept less by offering him $1.55 mil, knowing that he would be terrified at the 55 million figure and immediate file for less in case the arb board actually awarded him the club’s amount.

That Billy Beane. Still thinking one step ahead of the rest of us common folk.

Craig Breslow makes me feel so inferior. I usually like to take solace in the fact that I was probably better at academics than most athletes, but Breslow? Nope. He’s just the man. Great sign for the A’s that they don’t even need him to set up. It should really help the confidence of the young A’s rotation to know that this guy can come in the 6th or 7th and pitch well.
