Giants, Renteria Talking Again

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 4, 2011 at 11:11am CDT

The Giants and Edgar Renteria are once again discussing a potential deal, according to Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com (on Twitter). However, the team is not optimistic about re-signing the infielder, since Renteria has drawn interest from other clubs. The Giants offered a deal in the $1MM range earlier in the offseason, but Renteria didn't like the proposal and suggested it showed a "lack of respect."

The Reds offered Renteria a deal weeks ago, according to ESPN Deportes. Renteria, 34, says he intends to play for two more seasons. He batted .276/.332/.374 in 267 plate appearances last year, missing time with elbow, groin, hamstring and shoulder injuries before returning to form and winning the World Series MVP.

He needs to take it. He owes us for the ridiculous amount of money we paid him the last two years to be injured!

I think the Giants should offer him a minor league deal… just to make sure he goes elsewhere.

According to FANGRAPHS he was worth over 5 million last year…. I’d give him an offer of 2.5 and say take it or leave it… he probably wouldn’t get any more else where but atleast it shows some “RESPECT”

It should be a league minimum deal with incentives for staying healthy and playing more than a third of the season.

If I were offered $1 000 000 to play a game for 8 months out of the year The Giants could disrespect me all they want. They could spit on my face and call me Nancy for all I care.

hey Nancy, i would too but i would play for a dollar just to have my name etched in history and hopefully get to play a full game which would be nice.

At this point, Edgar, from the Northwestern, would give us more production.

Think Edgar should feel remorse for taking $18 million off the Giants for the last 2 years and giving so little production in return. He should play for the Giants and give them back half of his salary for those 2 years. (-9 mill/1 year contract). He would get an average of 3 mil a year for those 3 years and that’s still more than he is worth.

Renteria over the last two years has been more valuable and better defensively than Cabrera

The Reds shouldn’t waste their money of Rent a Wreck!!! As a Giants Fan, Edgar
The Lazy Renteria is not worth more than a million dollars. Last year, he was injurgy
prone and did a fair job at shortstop. The Reds should focus on a young shortstop
like Stephen Drew and or Jose Reyes. If The Giants are smart sign Orlando Cabrera
to a one year contract as a super sub. and in case Freddy Sanchez is not ready to
play maybe Infielder Felipe Lopez can be taken.

Edgar “the lazy” Renteria wants to a pay raise? Give me 10 reasons why The Giants
need to sign this guy. I understand that Orlando Cabrera can be very available and
I would sign Felipe Lopez as a back-up in case Freddy “the always injurged” Renteria
doesn’t come back in time for the Giants home opener. Also, why the Free Agent Scrapheap is pyling up, why not sign Jermaine Dye to a contract. lord knows we need some
    offense.
