Reds To Sign Jeremy Hermida

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 4, 2011 at 1:11pm CDT

The Reds agreed to sign Jeremy Hermida to a minor league deal, according to the team (on Twitter). The move fills out Cincinnati's outfield and lessens the need for Fred Lewis or Scott Podsednik. Career Sports represents Hermida, who turns 27 this month.

Hermida joins Drew Stubbs, Jonny Gomes and Chris Heisey in a primarily right-handed outfield (Jay Bruce is the lone lefty hitter). Hermida bats from the left side and has a career .267/.342/.432 line against righties, so he could provide manager Dusty Baker with an alternative starter most days. The former first rounder hit .216/.268/.351 for the Red Sox and A's last year, playing left and right.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports first reported the agreement and MLB.com's Mark Sheldon first reported that the sides were close to a deal.

Huh? It may be a great site, but the things that detract from that greatness include attempting to turn one’s own speculation into a fact, as it appears the poster of this article did.

In fact, Fay (Reds local writer) says they are still in on Pods and Lewis. So its not even speculation. It’s just wrong to say that Lewis and Pods have one less suitor.

Hermida has a minor league contract…as a NON-ROSTER invitee to big league camp/ST….Which basically means he must play his way onto the roster…And it gives the Reds a back-up LHB RF plan in case Bruce gets hurt.

The Reds are still in need of a cheap LHB LF/LO option…Lewis & Pods fit the bill. Hermida does not…He is in no way, shape or form a LO candidate.

I’d love to see Lewis signed…He seems to fit the clubs needs as well as anyone available. He’s younger & better defensively than Pods…And just as productive at the plate – when it comes to setting the table.

^^^ Ain’t that the truth!!! Guys just do not go from a career .175 ISO to .357 over an entire yr w/o something fishy going on!!!!

IMO, Many of the TOR players were helped last yr…They went from an AVG pwr team – to leading the league in HR’s & by a LARGE margin. (257 HR’s – NYY #2 had 211 – BOS #3 w/ 201). Something smells in that clubhouse!!! Either they were all on HGH or the juiced the balls or they figure out a way to rig the Dome into being a launching pad…How’d they do it??? I dunno…But I do know that Jose “Canseco” Bautista hit 54HR in 2010…after hitting btwn 13-16/yr 2006-2009.

I don’t think there’s ever been a depth signing on mlbtr that someone hasn’t thought themselves original by saying something along the lines of “Oh, well this is gonna send them to the World Series!”

Seconded. Especially since all indications (John Fay for one) have said that they’re still in on Lewis, maybe Pods.

Hermida is still relatively young and has some pop, it’s a good no risk, any reward signing.

I’ll admit I haven’t done a lot of looking at Fred Lewis but he always played well when I saw him and seems like he could be a decent enough 2 hitter in most line ups. Am I missing something?

Using that profound logic, let’s never criticize the US Congress, the president, or anyone affiliated with all branches of the federal government because America is a great country.

Well, that’s a completely moot point. I’m Canadian.

If the Reds want an outfielder with defensive deficiencies but with lots of POP…..what in the world is wrong with Jaun Franciso???

What is wrong with Jaun Franciso in LF?? He bats LH, would be equally bad defensively and hits with more power/better average.
