Quick Hits: Zito, Rangers, Morgan, Angels

By Zach Links | April 14, 2011 at 10:29pm CDT

Links for Thursday night..

  • The Giants likely can't get much for Barry Zito and therefore a deal involving him is unlikely, writes MLB.com's Chris Haft.
  • Ryan Theriot enjoyed his brief stint with the Dodgers last season, writes Quinn Roberts for MLB.com.  After playing 54 games for the club last season, he was shipped to the Cardinals for reliever Blake Hawksworth.
  • Despite all of the uncertainty about their rotation heading into this season, it seems like the Rangers pitching is just fine, writes Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com.
  • After bouncing around from the Pirates to the Nationals to the Brewers, Nyjer Morgan seems to be carving out a niche for himself in Milwaukee, writes George Von Benko for MLB.com.  The Brewers acquired Morgan in exchange for Cutter Dykstra in late March.
  • Major League Baseball announced the selection order for the draft (June 6-8) and the Padres own five of the first 58 overall selections, writes Corey Brock of MLB.com.  In addition to their own first-rounder, the club has the ninth pick for failing to sign their 2010 first-round pick, pitcher Karsten Whitson.  They also have three compensatory picks for Jon Garland (Dodgers), Yorvit Torrealba (Rangers) and Kevin Correia (Pirates).
  • The Angels are grateful to have picked up left-handed relievers Hisanori Takahashi and Scott Downs this offseason, writes Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

“Nyjer Morgan seems to be carving out a niche for himself in Milwaukee”

It’s only been a dozen games. A little early to be making that call considering his past.

it’s very possible that t plush didn’t succeed with the pirates/nats because they were/are bad teams. He seems like a very emotional, all-out guy. A .280/.360 line would be exactly what the Brewers need… granted RR would have to realize that gomez is terrible and free T plush.

Or it is very possible that he did the exact same thing and played lights out for 2 months in D.C. too then reverted to the ballplayer he really is. That by the way is a guy who gets picked off 11 times a year, thrown out another 17, has temper tantrums and throws his glove around the outfield while the ball is still in play, can’t hit a cut off man despite having one of the worst arms in the league and tries to bunt every 3rd at bat but isn’t even a good bunter…His first interview as a Brewer mentioned how he hadn’t seen a 3 game winning streak in 2 years and took other shots at the Nationals and the fans. He also did the same thing when he came to D.C. in 2009, taking a handful of shots about how the Pirates didn’t know how to utilize him. He is a classless ball player who doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut….

Nice work by Chris Haft, who is currently working on other articles with tentative titles:

“Mariners Could Probably Net a King’s Ransom for Felix”
    “Wainwright Absence Not Helping Cardinals”
    …and
“McCourt Ownership Not Best Thing for Club on the Field”

So yes, Barry Zito is overpaid…. but the guy stays healthy and eats up innings, they’d have to eat so much salary its not even worth it. i’m so sick of hearing about the giants and possibly trading zito. he isn’t going anywhere. he isnt great, but he’s not THAT bad.

He’s not that bad, but he’s also not that good. The Giants are not going to be able to trade him, obviously, it’s just a matter of if they can find someone else to take that 5th spot in the rotation soon and just DFA him at some point. I’d much rather pay him 7 mil to go away in 2014 than 18 mil to pitch

There is no way you release Zito with the money he is owed. He might not be great but he is not the worst. If he wins 10 games it will be good for the giants. The guy can still pitch, last year there was about 5-6 games he pitched well and didnt get run support. The good thing for the giants is they dont have to rely on him as an ace with Lincecum, Cain, and Sanchez ahead of him

c’mon! Barry Zito. ZITO. as cool a name as ever. no need ever for a nickname. what was he supposed to do: turn down the contract?!?
“No. No thanks. I’m a pretty cool guy, but I’m not that great a pitcher. I appreciate the offer.”

Why was my comment removed? I just said that Barry Zito liked to buy his own autographs on eBay and linked the source for venn177.

Why don’t the Giants trade Zito for Soriano from the Cubs?
