Montero Among Expected September Call-Ups

By Tim Dierkes | August 31, 2011 at 12:28pm CDT

Last September, 22 players were designated for assignment as teams cleared spots on their 40-man rosters.  One reason to open a 40-man spot is to add a September call-up when the active roster expands.

For example, Joel Sherman of the New York Post says the Yankees intend to promote Jesus Montero, but not Manny Banuelos or Dellin Betances.  Montero will have to be added to the Yankees' 40-man roster, which is currently full.  A spot can be created by designating someone for assignment, or transferring a player from the 15-day DL to the 60-day.

MLBTR's 40-man roster count post indicates that 11 teams currently have at least one open spot on the 40-man.  Montero, Martin Perez, and Devin Mesoraco are a few top prospects who would have to be added to 40-man rosters, notes MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo, and the Yankees, Rangers, and Reds are all currently full.

The Yankees seem to deal Posada a blow every time they play the Red Sox.  Will he be DFAed tonight to make room for Montero?

No, they wouldn’t do that to him. He will only get dfa-ed if he makes another public scene regarding something like playing time.

I thought Montero was already on 40 man because he was already up this season.

He’s played a full season of Triple-A at 21 years old and has struck out less than a hundred times. You’re going to have to troll him about something else.

montero is overrated because he’s a catching prospect that isn’t really going to be a catcher

you know what else he is, though? really awesome. even as a 1B he’s a legitimate top 50 prospect because of his bat alone. if he were in your team’s farm system instead of the yankees, you’d be appropriately thrilled

Agreed. And Law, Callis, and Goldstein all have him as top fifteen even though none of them thinks he’ll be a catcher. And I’m a non-Yankee fan living in New York, so I don’t *want* to feed the hype.
