Elias Rankings Update

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | September 2, 2011 at 7:57am CDT

After the season the Elias Sports Bureau will take all players over the 2010-11 period, divide them into five groups for each league, and rank them based on various statistics.  Then each player will be labeled a Type A, B, or none.  Those designations and the possible accompanying arbitration offers determine draft pick compensation (click here for a refresher).

Eddie Bajek has reverse-engineered the Elias rankings, and he's providing that information exclusively at MLB Trade Rumors.  Here's a look at how the players rank for the period beginning with the 2010 season running through August 31st, 2011.  Click here to go to the rankings directly if they don't appear below.

Kelly Johnson has squeaked into type A already. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the off-season for him and the Jays.

The way he’s playing lately, i hope he stays but draft picks are always nice

As long as Yunel Escobar dont try to do anything we are good, guess this means Encarnasion stay since hes not a type b and got a great option on his contract.

2012: Atempt #2 in trying to get value out of EE. Also, i dont get the “As long as Yunel Escobar dont try to do anything we are good” comment.

Escobar is directly below Johnson in the Rankings and the staddle the top “B” and bottom “A” list so if he (Escobar) climbs then Johnson falls potentially. Really I’m leaning towards just keeping Johnson.

          Yep…Team Option = Attempt #2

Why is Joaqin Benoit an A? Also Verlander should be above CC lol..

Benoit has a lot of appearances in the past 2 years and a very good ERA. Verlander and CC’s stats are virtually identical in the past 2 years with the slight edge, 1 win and same losses, to CC.

Elias Rankings are based off of your standard counting stats like ERA, Wins, Saves and stuff like that.

how is carl crawford above ellsbury?

It counts for the past 2 years. With Ellsbury missing a lot of time last year that hurts is rankings.

If someone signs CJ Wilson, do the Rangers get two picks?

If they offer him arbitration, he declines and someone else signs him then yes they do get 2 picks.

If he declines arbitration, i would rather the Jays go after Darvih than Wilson.

Well obviously Texas will offer and he’ll decline. Because that, along with the Darvish situation, will only help Texas in contract talks with CJ.

Russell Martin a B and AJ Pirzensky an A…really
Tori Hunter still an A and Abreu a B…the Angels are screwed
Heckilson with none status is head scratching…
Yankees praying Soriano opts out to get A status still?
    K-Rod A status with Dave Robertson only a B…

This system is totally flawed and puts way too much empahsis on old history of players and does not adequatly reflect what their current value should be…

I agree it is flawed, to a certain extent, but to say that it emphasizes too much of a players history is a flawed statement in itself considering it only accounts for the past 2 seasons.

Why would you rank Russell Martin over AJ? Really?

AJ 35 next year, coming off injury,  over last 2 years AVG – .280, 10 HRs, 46 RBIs, 23% CS rate

Martin 29 next year, looked much better this year health wise, this year AVG .240 17HRs, 61 RBIs, 31% CS rate

Overall Martin has more punch offensively, better at throwing runners out and 6 years younger!  AJ might only have 2 decent years left.  Look at Posada’s fall off once he got past 35 as a full time catcher.  Catchers do not last forever like DH’s, Pitchers or corner infielders…AJ’s window is shrinking fast

You obviously don’t understand how these rankings work. Its based on the past 2 years stats. It doesn’t matter who is the general consensus better player it matters what they have done in the past 2 years. Martin hardly played last year and that is why his ranking is so low.

Kinda sad that the two top-rated catchers don’t catch much anymore.

why is Peter Bourjos ranked that low he should be in the top ten. He is a gold glover who can hit and create runs. You put him behind Wells and one spot ahead of russell. Thats just dumb

Can’t tell if trolling.  If not, the rankings are done by (outdated) formulas from stats over the past two seasons.  Your defense (unless you make tons of errors), future potential, and basically anything that isn’t a counting stat doesn’t mean squat.
