Angels Close To Deal With LaTroy Hawkins

By Luke Adams | December 7, 2011 at 8:28pm CDT

The Angels are close to signing LaTroy Hawkins, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. This matches up with comments made earlier today by GM Jerry Dipoto, indicating the Angels were moving toward shoring up their bullpen. The deal is expected to be for one year, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

The Brewers also have interest in Hawkins, who posted a 2.42 ERA in 48 1/3 innings for Milwaukee in 2011.

Was going to LOL, but I love this an Angels fan.  At least we are spending pennies on relief instead of dollars.  History has shown that relief corps are highly inconsistent year over year so if we are gonna spend do it small.  There are only so many relievers you can sign. More money for everyday players!  Nice JeDi.

Oh, LaTroy, you dirty whore. Posting gaudy stats until the crucial games, where you fold.

Just ask the fans of the Twins, Cubs, Giants, Rockies, Astros, Yankees….

    Perfect for the Halos, though.

Sounds like a good move. We need some veteran leadership in the bullpen as much as we really need the arm. If he pitches like last year, it’s a bonus. If he just does ok and provide the leadership, great.

People, relax… I’m sure this won’t prevent the Angels from making a big deal for an impact player, IF they decide to do so… if they’re going to shore up their bullpen, I’d rather see them do a signing like this, as opposed to $40+ mil for Ryan Madson, or whatever he’ll cost… As for the CJ Wilson thing, I still hope it doesn’t happen…the Marlins throwing in a 6th year could be doing the Halos a favor… then they might have money to go after Darvish or …maybe, maybe, just maybe…fingers crossed… Fielder. Then they can trade for a starter.

Not sure why I never considered Darvish as a possibility.  I guess I already had him in pinstripes.  That would be nice.

I think Boston’s a bigger threat for Darvish than the Yanks, to tell the truth… technically, the Yankees are set 1-5 in the rotation, but Boston’s in trouble… Could also see the Mariners sneaking in, given their strong Japanese fan base…

I don’t think it will be Boston, partly because of their failure with big signings of late, but mostly because of Dice K.  Darvish is filthy.  Yes, please.

Not to mention, DiPoto did say in one of his first interviews after becoming GM that he did want to increase the Angels’ visibility in Asia… what better way to do that than getting Darvish?

A little bit of consistency in the pen is what we need.  Need I remind everyone of names like Rodney, Speier and Jepsen?  All very capable of walking the bases loaded.  Hawkins has a decent BB/K ratio and will be pretty cheap.  Not a lot of risk here.

Dipoto’s big splash!? Could of done this deal from Anaheim. And the Pujols rumor is just plain damage control to make fans think they at least tried to sign a big FA this year. New front office, same results. Good thing you gave up Chatwood without a back up plan Mr. Dipoto.
