Rockies “Remain Strongly Interested” In Justin Turner

By Mike Axisa | January 21, 2012 at 8:52am CDT

With their pitching needs generally satisfied following the Seth Smith trade, the Rockies have turned their attention to adding another second baseman. They had talks with the Red Sox about Marco Scutaro, and Troy Renck of The Denver Post says they "remain strongly interested" in Justin Turner.

Last month we heard that the Mets have interest in Eric Young Jr., and that the two sides could potentially work out a trade with Turner going to Colorado. At the moment, the Rockies have DJ LeMahieu, Chris Nelson, and Jonathan Herrera penciled in at second base. The 27-year-old Turner hit .260/.334/.356 with four homers and seven steals in 487 plate appearances for he Mets last season, spending most of his time at second while also playing third and a little bit of shortstop.

Seems like a fair trade.  EY offers speed and versatility and while Turner wasn’t terrible last year, I’ll admit the bar’s pretty low for Mets fans at 2B considering what we’ve had there.  If Murphy can play close to everyday he’s a FAR better option.  Hopefully Havens can stay healthy and make it his position at some point.

      point.

Uh, Murphy is only a better option at 2B until such time as he gets injured, as he is prone to do. So no guarantees that he holds down 2B long enough to be a bridge for Havens or anybody else. : /

Murphy’s injuries occurred because of freak slides that just happened to come two years in a row. I’d be reluctant to call him injury prone just because it’s the current Mets meme.

Besides Murph and Havens, Valdespin could get the call if he has a strong enough showing at AAA. If the situation got dire enough, you could have Satin play there on occasion, or whoever this years Ramon Martinez/Luis Hernandez is.

If Murph gets through the season without injury I’ll be more at ease with your brand of optimism (assuming he stays with the Mets).

Yep, Mets got options at 2B. Yay. 😐

Can’t get excited about anything re: this team right now…unless there’s sudden breaking news that the Wilpons are selling…

I’m not sure how you got excitement from Luis Hernandez there. The point is, the Mets have similarly mediocre options to Justin Turner at 2B, and trading him would have little to no consequence.

As for the Wilpons, yes I’d be elated if they sold, but I’d say there is a zero to less than zero chance of that happening, at least in the short term.

And I’m not sure where you got that I thought you were excited about him. I was merely making an observation regarding my own lack of enthusiasm about the Mets this year. Nothing more.

Edit: I’m not really looking for “answers” here. Just making a few observations and blowing off some steam.

There are 11 different ways to turn a double play, and Murphy doesn’t know one of them. He can hit thats it, his baserunning is bizzare.

Well, it’s no surprise that Murphy is an extremely hard worker, any Mets fan knows that.  With that said, I’m HOPING that if TC comes to him and says “You’re our 2Bman, go work on it” that he’ll be able to succeed because he’s not being bounced around the infield.  Again, wishful thinking, but his bat profiles well there.

It honestly wouldn’t shock me if Murphy’s working at 2B as we speak.

The best thing for him is to stick to one position and focus his time and energy there. He has decent range and arm and has made plenty highlight reel plays. Last season, TC made mistake of putting Murphy back at second base 3 months after he last played their having a lack of experience there to begin with. That mistake was injury waiting to happen which it did.

If Turner is traded, I want pitching or a CF prospect back for him, not another equally mediocre 2B. I assume Wheeler is not available for him, but perhaps Matzek, Fiedrich, or Cabrera would be options (the stocks of the first two has fallen a great deal, and Cabrera isn’t regarded very highly).

Is it normal to be completely baffled by the Rockies offseason agenda so far?

Its very typical for the Rockies to focus all their attention on 1 or 2 positions and fill it with mediocrity. Next year they plan on bringing 14 catchers none of whom can hit over .240 to camp.

I dunno, since they apparently seem to be stockpiling 6th starters, I’m not sure the Mets can make this deal without throwing in Chris Schwinden.

As a Denver resident, I’d like to see our only legacy EY2 stay and have a shot at second. He’s put up good number in the minors. No need to swap him for Turner.

I know Turner isn’t the best ball player but it would suck to see him leave too…Pagan and Turner were (are) my favorites.

That sums up how painful it is to be a Mets fan. At least they got Wheeler this past season. Still cant believe they didnt trade Reyes before. Losing him to free agency gives them minimal compensation. Hopefully they dont mess up with Wright and trade him either midseason or next offseason.

Well, honestly even the case was where the Mets were a contending team again (though I don’t think Turner would be a starter…) I would still miss him…

Man crush on Turner? haha. Rockies seem like they just want to trade for a 2b. They are interested in Sctuaro and Turner now. Probably would not get much for Turner, not sure why the Mets would trade him.

It’s easy to understand why the Rockies like Turner. Turner’s a hard nosed ballplayer, a smart one good in the clutch, who goes opposite field well, is team player with excellent disposition and plays injured. He produced solid numbers and tore the cover off the ball in the clutch till those injuries caught up to him. Good utility player who does a solid job starting. Can play third but is much better second baseman.

That said, a swap for Young Jr. makes sense given the Mets are in need of legit speed after losing both Reyes and Pagan.

Turner for EY is a bad trade for the Rox. With Jonny rocket behind Scutero now at second, EY could continue to play with 1B and the outfield. Behind the plate and on the basepads we have no player with the same presence

I am so sick of all these freakin’ rumors that don’t make any freakin’ sense. They better not get rid of Turner-I wish the league would come in and pitch the Wilpons to the freakin’ curb & run them over. They say they love the game, they say they love their team. IF they did they would sell the team & give them a chance to do something this year-instead they hang on & ruin the team. Reyes gone-Beltran gone. They have the worst medical staff that put players in jeopardy & maybe end their career because they are too cheap to hire a competent medical staff-but they weren’t so cheap when they get paid/ make sure you have enough money for yourself & your greedy little family. GET RID OF THE WILPONS & BUILD THE METS BACK UP TO WHERE THEY SHOULD BE. “REPORTERS STOP PRINTING RUMOURS”!!!!
