Brewers Seek Middle Infielder

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 16, 2012 at 4:45pm CDT

The Brewers are looking for a middle infielder, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney tweets. The club aims to add insurance behind starters Rickie Weeks and Alex Gonzalez.

Infielders Brooks Conrad and Cesar Izturis could crack the Opening Day roster if GM Doug Melvin doesn't complete a deal before then. Aaron Miles and Miguel Tejada are available in free agency, but they wouldn't necessarily represent an upgrade over the Brewers’ existing candidates.

Elliot Johnson, Chris Nelson, Eric Young Jr., Emmanuel Burriss, Luis Valbuena, Donnie Murphy, Robert Andino and Brent Lillibridge are out of options and could be available in trades later by the end of the month. The Phillies are also looking for infield help.

I with that the Tigers would pick up EY and stop screwing around with Inge.

Kenny and robin love lilibridge. The only way he gets traded is if the sox are way out of it by the break and he is having a monster year. I highly doubt the sox trade him

The Brewers don’t have a starting shortstop and if Rickie Weeks gets hurt this team is in huge trouble. You would think with Prince leaving that they’d try to make the defense (which was awful last year) as good as possible to try and negate the effects of Prince leaving and the team not being able to Home Run swing their way to a pennant again this year.

BUT… I guess anything is better than Yuni Bentancourt. That was just torture to watch.

Ramirez, Gonzalez and Gamel should be better than McGehee, Betancourt and Fielder, no?

The starting SS is Alex Gonzalez, but you’re right, they lack depth. They have a few minor leaguers who could play in a pinch, but hopefully they will bring more backup options in.

I think the defense is better, although not that drastically…at least the black hole at SS is now average-above average on defense.

The real issue is that not only do the Brewers not have depth/backups at SS or 2B, they don’t really have much for prospects there either.

Trade a middle infielder (plus) for a starting pitcher…
