Giants To Release Mike Fontenot

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 30, 2012 at 12:54pm CDT

The Giants have placed infielder Mike Fontenot on release waivers, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports (Twitter links). The Giants agreed to terms with the arbitration-eligible Fontenot on a one-year, $1.05MM deal this offseason, and they'll save three quarters of that sum by cutting ties with him today.

Fontenot posted a .227/.304/.377 line in 252 plate appearances at second base, shortstop and third base last year. The Fielding Bible Volume III suggests Fontenot provides adequate defense around the infield. He'll obtain approximately $250K in termination pay from the Giants. Teams like the Phillies and Rangers could have interest in signing the 31-year-old.

Paging the NY Mets, he is better than Turner…

Why couldn’t they just trade him, atleast for a low prospect? Especially with a termination fee.. Seems weird.

because players like him are “dime a dozen”, can find them anywhere.  I like Fontenot but he is interchangeable

Doubt it – not with DeWitt and Baker already on the 25-man roster.

The Dodgers seem to be cornering the market on old infielders this year. Maybe take a quick flight down the coast …

Anyone else think he’ll have a new job by the end of the day?

Fontenot = Burriss = Theriot….They are interchangable.  Burriss is cheaper.

Perfect pick up for the Brewers….Should replace Cesar Izturis

That’d be a good pickup for the Brewers, especially if they can sign him cheap. Fontenont has more power, and in Miller Park, he’d be a doubles machine again, like when he played for the Cubs. I always thought he should have been given a little more time, ala Todd Walker, as I watched them both from high school to when they played for LSU.

Braves should sign him. Rather have him than Jack Wilson.

I figured both Theriot and Fontenot would be released.  If not that, then I figured Theriot would be released.  Didn’t think just Fontenot would go.

With Burris all but assured a roster spot, one of the “OT’s” had to go but I also figured Theriot was going to be the odd man out. Fontenot has had a decent spring while Theriot has looked completely lost. Not sure of the logic behind this move.

Agree with you. Probably about contract. See them both in Philly by next Friday.

But I there was hardly a difference between contracts. I just can’t understand how you cut a member of your world series team instead of someone similar that had a worse spring.

Phillies are always in need of some pop from a player capable of filling in for Utley AND HIS KNEES(R.I.P.)

Only foul ball I have ever caught at a major league game came from his bat.

Fontenot last season and career ops+ 92 Burriss last year ops+34 and 60 for his career. Burriss can’t hit and has zero power. Fontenot was the best hitting healthy infielder on the team. Bad move by the giants.

Brewers, this is that middle infield depth you’ve been looking for.
