NL West Notes: Lincecum, Padres, Moores, Jimenez

By Zachary Links | March 9, 2012 at 9:31pm CDT

Here's a look at some items out of the National League West..

  • The Giants offered Tim Lincecum at least $100MM over five years a couple months back, but it now it appears that the two sides are at least $75MM apart, with the right-hander looking for a seven- or eight-year deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.
  • Jeff Moorad has withdrawn his application to be the controlling partner of the Padres, meaning that John Moores will own the team for the foreseeable future, tweets Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
  • Tom Krasovic of Inside The Padres runs down the particulars of what this means for the future of the club.  Moorad will remain the Vice Chairman and CEO of the Padres while Moores will remain the majority owner of the team as he has since 1994-95.  Krasovic also writes that MLB is likely to approve the 20-year TV deal between the Padres and FOX.
  • Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez don't exactly see eye-to-eye with former teammate Ubaldo Jimenez on his dissatisfaction with the Rockies, writes Scott Miller of CBSSports.com.  The pitcher said that he was upset with the club in part because Tulowitzski and Gonzalez received lucrative new deals following the 2010 season while he did not.

Of course Tulo and Gonzalez don’t see eye to eye with Ubaldo…they’re the ones that got the long-term deals.

That lack of a high value, long-term deal made is much easier to ship him out when he hit the skids last season too. Agree, no surprise that Tulo and Cargo are happy, but it also sounds like crying over sour grapes on Jimenez’s part.

Tulo would be pretty easy to ship out unless he got injured.  He hits .300, walks plenty, and 30 hr, and 10 sb.  He is an absolute bargain at 15M AAV.  His away splits are good too, he would easily get 20M AAV on the open market, but he must like colorado.

Cargo wouldn’t be that hard to ship out now, but since his contract is backloaded and another team doesn’t see his splits, then he would be harder, but he isn’t really signed that long.

Yeah but, it’s not like the Rockies didn’t want to sign Ubaldo. They wanted to sign all three of them. Ubaldo acted like a little child about it, and threw a fit because he didn’t get signed before them

Any idea what figure they looking to lock Jimenez up with? Prior to 2011 the Rockies still had him under control for 4 years. Doubt they were talking contract with him once the season unraveled. Seems way to early for the team to be worrying about a pitcher of all players considering his previous deal.

As a Padres fan, I’m just glad he’s out of the division. In ’10 there were a ton of a great pitching performances in the West – Jimenez, Latos, Kershaw, Lincecum, Kennedy etc. – but Jimenez was at or near the top in being the least favorite for my team to face. For all the whoopla Chapman was getting, Jimenez seemed like a similar more consistent version.

Billy Beane’s Saber Metrics really missed the boat on Cargo huh?

Sometimes guys pan out. Sometimes they don’t. Sabermetrics won’t necessarily tell you how exactly good a player will be, but they can give you a better shot. But yea he messed up cargo is one best players.

Billy Bean had a good draft. That doesn’t he has a good draft, all the time. If he keeps having bad drafts, he will be out of baseball.

Doesn’t it go back to the Dbacks too, sure they got Dan Haren, but can you imagine an outfield of Gonzalez, Young & Upton? Best outfield in baseball, IMO.

Clearly when Beane parted with Gonzalez to get Matt Holliday, he did so thinking they could compete in 2009. Though coming off a 76-86 season getting Holliday for only one year, it was a poorly calculated gamble. Having only Michael Taylor to show for it doesn’t help. Atleast the Dbacks have Tyler Scaggs & Pat Corbin to help off-set that lost, not to mention a couple very productive seasons from Haren, not his fault the rest of the team disappointed.

That’s funny.  His numbers are good home and away.  He’s got power to hit it out of any park, including Yosemite.

I wonder if this means Moores will receive the ownership stake in the new TV network. I don’t necessarily want Moorad to be the big winner in the TV deal, but it seems more likely to be beneficial to the team if (hopefully) long term owner (Moorad) and his partners are receiving the benefits of the deal versus Moores who wouldn’t have any stake in whether the team succeeded or not.

        This should clear things up:

“…Gonzalez received lucrative following the 2010 season and he didn’t.”

WOW 175 million for seven years? Man that’s a lot of money. Wish my parents at least gave me a chance at tee ball.

So the Giants are idiots and Lincecum has unrealistic expectations.  Nice combo.

Checking out Ubaldo’s list of “Similar Pitchers” on BR and it looks pretty scary. Top 3 are Rich Harden, Wade Miller and Erik Bedard. Big flameouts.

Yeah, that points out the importance of Ublado staying healthy. He does that then he’ll have a far more valuable career then Bedard or Harden. Can understand why the Rockies were nervous of things going that route when they moved him. That’s said I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s one of the top 2 or 3 pitchers in the AL central either or both of these next two years.

Comparing Jimenez to Harden directly, and it’s not really close. Jimenez has been between 188 IP and 221 IP over the last four years averaging 207 IP over that time. Harden never threw 150 IP in back-to-back seasons or why they’ve thrown the same number of innings despite Jimenez make his full season debut four years after Harden. So I wouldn’t put too much weight in the “comps”. Seems like BR is dooming him for a dropoff in innings prior to it actually happening, which isn’t really fair.

Bedard and Harden were both incredibly good and would very easily have been front line aces if their bodies didn’t break down/didn’t get hurt often.

BR systems can’t project whose bodies will break down when.
