Orioles Considering Kyle McClellan

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 13, 2012 at 10:48am CDT

The Orioles are considering possible trades for Kyle McClellan, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports tweets. It's not clear if the Cardinals are ready to move the right-hander, since Chris Carpenter may not be ready for Opening Day and they may decide to preserve their depth.

The Cardinals appeared to be shopping McClellan in January, and the Orioles had interest in him at that time. McClellan, 27, opened the 2011 season in the Cardinals' rotation before moving to the bullpen. He completed 141 2/3 innings with a 4.19 ERA, 4.8 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 last year and will earn $2.5MM in 2012. The Orioles pitching staff already features more than its share of new additions after a busy offseason under Dan Duquette.

What exactly are the Orioles going to do with this guy?
Can I interest the Cardinals in Kevin Gregg?

How about a guy we will call Fausto Carmona who just happens to be Kevin Gregg?

I think that name is available now.

Not unless you can change his appearance too.  For some reason Gregg is even annoying to look at, let alone watch pitch.

Agreed – no idea how McClellan fits into a rotation that already has Chen, Arrieta, Hunter, Hammel, Matusz, Britton, Wada vying for spots, with Eveland, Simon, Bergesen on the periphery. That’s a lot of guys.

He’s also a good set up man. He’s a versatile pitcher.

K-Mac is a reliever.  I could see the Orioles dealing one of their starters for K-Mac.  Insurance for is if Carp continues to have problems with his neck.

The Orioles aren’t going to offer anyone for McClellan that could do a better job filling in for Carpenter as Lynn will do.  The sky isn’t falling and there is no reason to panic.

I understand that but they may want to leave Lynn in the pen this season.

They already said they are going to stretch Lynn out in case Carpenter is not ready by Opening Day.  Which he should be preparing as a starter every year anyway.  The Cardinals also have better options at AAA that could fill in better than anyone the O’s would offer for McClellan.

I get that.  The Cardinals have internal options, but best case scenario has Lynn in the bullpen.  They can stretch him out in spring training but I doubt that is what they want to do.  I am not saying any of this will happen but it is pretty suspicious these rumors come out around the time Carp has neck problems.  I wouldn’t put much stock into anything the Cardinals say because most of the time they are just pandering to the audience.  Who in AAA not named Shelby Miller is better than what the Orioles would trade as a starter, since my premise is Lynn would stay in the bullpen.  We don’t have that great of SP’s in AAA other than Miller.

I’m not saying the Cardinals have anything special in AAA and I’m not saying the Orioles don’t have anything that could help the Cardinals.  I am saying that trading Kyle McClellan doesn’t get the Cardinals anything valuable that’s going to help.   I’m fine with Lynn, McClellan, Rzep,  or Dickson starting.  Miller should start the year in AA.

Lynn should be a starter.  That’s where his value lies.  yes, he is a good reliever but if the Cardinals really think he can be a MOR starter, it’s time to keep him ready.  He is much more valuable as a starter than a middle reliever.

I think Lynn’s best spot is in the pen.  When he is in the rotation a lot of speed drops off his fastball and his stuff just isn’t the same.  I don’t think Lynn will be in the rotation any time soon.

Honestly I would trade McClellan for the batboy and a large nacho or pretzel (wouldn’t want to get too greedy and ask for both).  Sure he might have some upside being able to do some long relief but he really is nothing special and will run out of gas in September.
