Talks Accelerate Between Giants, Cain

By Zachary Links | April 1, 2012 at 8:48pm CDT

The volume of dialogue has increased between the Giants and Matt Cain's representatives as Friday's  deadline edges near, sources tell Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com.  While the deadline of Friday has been characterized as soft, the pitcher would like talks to be wrapped up prior to the Giants' Opening Day.

Sources tell Baggarly that Cain's camp has not shown any signs of lowering their asking price.  It's believed that five years and $100MM is the floor in negotiations and it's not known if the Giants have even offered that much.  In a chat with fans on Thursday, CEO Larry Baer insisted the club was not making "lowball" offers to the 27-year-old.

A month ago, most pessimists said that if Cain didn’t sign an extention, he would likely be a Yankee next year.  Now it’s the Dodgers.  Well I’m going out on a limb and saying that if Cain doesn’t resign, he’ll be a Chicago Cubbie next season!  That’s right!  I said it!   😉

The Giants are crazy to not go over $100 million for Cain. He means too much to his franchise and is just as good as Timmy, but hour the flair. Cain will be worth every dollar they spend on him.

Extremely off-topic, but are anybody elses notifications not dissapearing like they should (or have in the past) after you click on them? It might just be a bug, but its been happening all day. Whatever.

Just get the standing room only seats and stand by the cove. There’s a beer stand, garlic fries and restrooms no one really uses.

Cheap seats? Not anymore thanks to market pricing.

If the talks accelerated the pitch of the dialogue would increase, not the volume.  Jesus Christ.

volume doesn’t just refer to loudness, but also a quantity, such as a volume of water. so there is a greater quantity of talks between cain/sf. regardless, crossing fingers

Volume actually refers to the amount of space an object or substance occupies, and does not refer to quantity.  But I suppose the talks have been occupying more space on mlbtraderumors.

The easiest way in the world to tell the ownership is lowballing Matt Cain is to listen to their public proclamations.  Yup, they are lowballing.  A serious ownership would have been very happy to wrap it up anywhere between 110-120MM, let the agent fill in the years (within reason of course, lets not go 4 on that).  They are not serious, not serious about contending, not serious about the competition and not serious about their fans.  They are sitting on a powder keg, and we’ll see soon if this is too little too late.

You do realize this ownership that you say is not serious about winning just won the whole thing 2 yrs ago?  And last year, in defending the title, traded away Zach Wheeler for Carlos Beltran in attempts to be serious about winning?

Still can’t believe they gave up Zach Wheeler for Beltran only to see him sign elsewhere for little more then Huff money. Sabean is willing to give Huff 22m, Uribe 20m last off-season, but 26m for Beltran was just too much?!?

Agreed, awful signings.  That unfortunately is a whole separate convo… they are aggressive in going for it though

You do realize this ownership group kicked Neukom to the curb over cutting deadweight off the roster right?  Deadweight that should have been kicked off the day they traded for Beltran I might add.

Neukom wanted a $10MM bonus for himself… that’s why, according to all reports, he is no longer the face

If you buy into Larry Baer hatchet jobs, yes Neukom wanted a 10MM salary according to Matier & Ross.  Not buying a guy receiving partnership dividends and worth in the high nine figures is sweating a salary though, but at the moment this doesn’t matter anymore because the ownership group stepped up to the  plate.  Credit has to go to fan pressure on this one, but they did the right thing, a big time play, so good job RDF.

No way was Cain going to leave, Giants signed him with plenty of time remaining. I think Bumgarner is next, and of the ‘Big 3’ if anyone were to leave it would be Timmy. I love Timmy but not at 7 or 8 yrs

The Giants will sign Cain, probably around 6/115 because in the it makes the most sense.   By the time Timmy becomes a FA, cause I don’t see the Giants signing that long term deal, the Giants hopefully will have Crick and/or Blackburn in the rotation.  But they cannot afford not to resign Cain, no matter how much the Dodger fans wish Cain into Dodger Blue
