Yankees Sign Nelson Figueroa

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 19, 2012 at 11:19am CDT

The Yankees have signed right-hander Nelson Figueroa to a minor league deal, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets. Mike Silva first reported that the Yankees had a deal with ACES client.

The Blue Jays signed the 37-year-old to a minor league deal in January, but appear to have released him since. Figueroa started the 2011 season in Houston's rotation, but the Astros released him in August after he posted an 8.69 ERA with 5.3 K/9 and 5.0 BB/9 in 29 innings. He spent most of the season at Triple-A, where he posted a 6.05 ERA with 6.0 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 99 2/3 innings.

Guy slammed the Mets on his way out, like we owe him a roster spot due
to how long he’s hung around. Get lost Figgy, your ego is as plump as
    your ERA.

I was under the impression that Figgy was miffed because he had a lucrative offer from Japan or Taiwan in 2010 and only signed a minor league contract with the Mets because he thought that he’d either make the Mets or head to the Far East. Instead, the Phillies claimed him on waivers before he could become a free agent. Not an excuse for slamming the Mets but something of an explanation.

That might have been a bit of an excuse if he hadn’t also had negative comments for each of his successive teams after that. He was kind of a feel-good story that became a feel-bad story.

I wasn’t aware of this, so if my comments seem harsh I do apologize.

You’re right. The Mets didn’t owe Figgy anything, but I will say this. He should have made the Mets 2010 opening day roster instead of Jenrry Mejia, who was 1, a Starter at the time, and 2, not even Major League Ready. As far as the Yankees claiming him, it’s only to provide depth in the minors. Not a bad move, but nothing to get excited about.

They probably need a warm body to eat innings at AAA level or lower, it’s not something to make a big fuss about. I would be shocked if he contributes anything to the big league team, besides a cameo due to some roster juggling followed by a quick release.

IIRC They just called up a young reliever. He just needs to eat innings down there.
