D’Backs Designate Cody Ransom For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 21, 2012 at 4:25pm CDT

The Diamondbacks announced that they designated infielder Cody Ransom for assignment (Twitter link). The team will recall infielder Josh Bell from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Arizona now has two open 40-man roster spots.

Ransom, 36, posted a .269/.345/.577 batting line in 58 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks this year. He played third base and shortstop, the same two positions he appeared at in 2011. Ransom has a .226/.310/.409 batting line in parts of ten seasons at the MLB level.

36 years old?  …man, seems like only yesterday he was on the Giants and booted that easy ground ball with the bases loaded at Dodger’s stadium.   The Giants were fighting from being eliminated from playoff hopes.  (bad grammar, i know)  Was that the same year Steve Finley hit the homer to officially eliminate the Giants?

Talk about digging at old wounds.

I was at that game sitting behind the owners…lol  The 9th was like having teeth pulled. After the game Larry Baer came to me and said Thanks for staying! lol

So Josh Bell is getting to play the team that traded him finally. That’s interesting

Bell’s tearing it up at AAA (although it is the PCL), but it’s not like Ransom has been worthless at the plate. Small sample sizes for both, though.

269 but he has 4 HR, he´s being way better than roberts in the plate

Uhh. No.  Has like 1 hit in his last 15 AB now that they remembered not to throw him fastballs.  Roberts hitting WELL over .300 in May.  Bye Bye Cody.  Thanks for stopping by and hitting a couple long ones.

I would be surprised if he isn’t claimed. If we (Oakland) take Luke Hughes and Brandon Inge, why not give Ransom a shot? The D’Backs undervalue him, I’ve been watching him all season and yes I know he’s old but he’s hitting well right now and could be an interesting gamble

Bell is a downgrade from Ransom. Bell looks bad tonight 2 k’s and an error. No idea what KT was thinking on this one.

Using a one game sample size is always a fantastic way to judge a baseball player.
