Diamondbacks, Hernandez Agree To Extension

By Daniel Seco 2 | June 24, 2012 at 5:59pm CDT

The Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with right-hander David Hernandez on a two-year contract extension, according to a team release. Hernandez, 27, has posted a 4.32 ERA with 8.4 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in four big league seasons spent with the Orioles and Diamondbacks.

The former 16th round pick is a hard-throwing flyball pitcher who has developed into a reliable setup man for Arizona since arriving in Phoenix prior to the 2011 season. Hernandez would have been arbitration eligible for the first time this offseason.

Cause nothing says you can hit like being a relief pitcher.

I liked Ziegler’s hit more, especially after seeing him run

Tucson, eh?  I thought we played in Phoenix.  And the last 2 spring trainings have been in Scottsdale, in the Phx metro area. Sooooo.  Hey, the question is does Mark Reynolds miss AZ?  His team is competing with the NYY for 1st in the AL East.  When we’re not scoring runs, I miss Reynolds’ HRs.  Guy was good for 90r 90rbi on average here.  Don’t complain.  Plus the swing and misses kept Chase Field nice and breezy, even with the roof closed!

BTW, depending on the $$, good idea to extend setup guy.  Plus he may become a closer depending on Putz contract/performance.

This is good if you’re a fan of any of the other 29 teams. Why this guy still throws that horrible breaking ball doesn’t make sense. Mid 90’s gas to 0-2, and then four rolly-polly sliders that scream “HIT ME!”

He’s putting up scary closer-like numbers. Not sure which Herenandez you are watching.

All of his pitches seem to be at least average and according to FanGraphs, he hasn’t thrown a slider in years.
