4:19pm: The Angels have officially announced Porter’s selection. Rivero was placed on the 10-day IL with a left hamate fracture and will require surgery, reports Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. Kochanowicz was transferred to the 60-day IL to open a 40-man spot.
10:31am: The Angels are set to select the contract of catcher Logan Porter, reports Ari Alexander of 7News. He signed a minor league deal with them five days ago after choosing free agency over an outright assignment with the Giants. Porter hasn’t even suited up for a game with the Halos’ Triple-A affiliate yet, but he’ll jump right to the big leagues after backup catcher Sebastian Rivero exited last night’s game due to an apparent hand injury.
Porter, 30, is joining his third big league team. He has brief experience in the majors with both the Royals and Giants, for whom he’s totaled a combined 47 plate appearances. Porter is just a .184/.326/.289 hitter in that time, but he’s a .244/.359/.389 hitter in parts of five Triple-A seasons. He’s light on power but has walked at a gaudy 14.4% clip in more than 1200 Triple-A plate appearances.
Porter also gives the Angels a defensively sound backup to starting catcher Logan O’Hoppe. He’s thrown out a roughly average 22% of runners who’ve attempted to steal on him in the minors (33% dating back to last season) and drawn quality framing grades with slightly below-average marks for his blocking abilities, per Baseball Prospectus.
The Angels have already utilized four different catchers in 2026. Porter will be the fifth, joining the quartet of O’Hoppe, Rivero, Travis d’Arnaud and Omar Martinez. He has a full slate of minor league options remaining, so the Angels don’t necessarily need to designate him for assignment when d’Arnaud and/or Rivero get healthy. The Halos will need to open 26-man and 40-man roster spots for Porter, but that should be pretty straightforward. His selection to the majors seems to point to an IL trip for Rivero, and righty Jack Kochanowicz can be shifted to the 60-day IL after undergoing Tommy John surgery this week.

Their problems are vast and they have bigger issues than catcher but they need to start looking for a permanent solution behind the plate. O’Hoppe isn’t it.
You aren’t going to find any catcher of merit mid-season. It takes too long to get to know the staff and understand the tendancies of the staff.
It sucks for Rivero who had a good couple of games. I am sure he hoped to ride the wave a little bit longer.
I was speaking in general.
I wouldn’t give up on him just yet.
He does an incredible job on ABS challenges which makes me think he knows his job. He is capable of figuring it out with the bat. I have faith in him.
I wish him luck, but a plan B should be in the works
O’Hoppe does an incredible job at ABS?
He does a solid job. He’s 11th among starting catchers, but overall the Angels are 29th in fWAR at catcher. And out of the 35 catchers with 100 PAs, O’Hoppe is 34th fWAR.
O’Hoppe is a problem.
Halo you can find ways to complain all you want. You continually find new ways to voice complaints and make up reasons to be unhappy.
Play on your Fanstats and Statgraphs if it makes you happy. I personally enjoy watching the games.
And….I still feel it is too soon to give up on O’Hoppe.
Complain? So you don’t like being held accountable for your opinions that can’t be supported with data.
Got it, don’t challenge AngelFan72 propaganda.
O’Hoppe put up 2.7 bWAR in 2025. In 2025 it was 0.0. So far this year, -0.1. He’s gotten worse in each of the last two seasons. There’s still time to turn this season around, but his numbers are going in the wrong direction. If he doesn’t turn it around this year, I would probably still give him next year, which will be his age 27 season, but he’s starting to run out of rope.
Socalbbal, to actually use data counter hyperbolic comments is complaining.
As you point out, he has the talent, but he’s taken steps backwards.
I heard he has three books.. One on our pitchers. One on opposing hitters, and one on opposing pitchers…. It’s possible hers too much in his head.
But whatever he’s doing, it ain’t working.
All I said was I feel it is too soon to give up on him.
I know you won’t answer because you never do when someone asks you for clarification. But, I need you to clarify what exactly I said that was propaganda? You turned it all around in typical Halo fashion. You like to twist the words of others to fit your complaints about the Angels.
You’ve done it countless times.
I have no problem with too soon.
My problem was with incredible. He does do a solid job with ABS, but he has a long way to go with the other aspects of his game.
jeeeez seriously?
You got hung up on one word when I clearly led it off with I feel it is too soon to give up on him just yet.
ok just to make you happy.
O’Hoppe does an admirable job with the ABS system. My whole stupid point was how he has taken on ABS.
The Great Hambino’s grandson??
Rivero finally starts hitting then he gets hit. Sucked to see that last night.
Nothing gets you to the Majors faster than signing a minor league deal with the Angels.
@HHJJ So true. The life of an Angel’s fan. Guy was never much of a hitter. Gets on probably the hottest streak of his life and maybe ever will have. Guy gets hurt on the most innocent looking play ever.
This has to be proof that we are cursed.
This signing has been approved by gm
Don’t know why more players don’t go for the Axe Bats. They’ve licensed a number of manufacturers, including Marucci and Victus. The handle theoretically offers a more efficient swing path. More importantly it takes the hamate out of the equation.
I thought for sure they were going to bring up Shaun Anderson to be the backup catcher.
