Padres To Sign Max Fried

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 15, 2012 at 3:45pm CDT

The Padres will announce they've signed first round selection Max Fried, MLB.com's Corey Brock reports (Twitter link). Fried, a high school left-hander, will obtain $3MM, MLB's recommended bonus for the the seventh overall selection, according to Dan Hayes of the North County Times (on Twitter).

Fried has a fastball that's been clocked in the 88-95 mph range to go along with a plus curveball and a promising changeup, Baseball America reports. Lucas Giolito, the Nationals' first rounder, was a teammate of Fried's at Harvard-Westlake high school.

Draft Signings: Brewers, Rockies, Red Sox, Mets

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 15, 2012 at 3:17pm CDT

So far this year we haven’t seen as many substantial draft bonuses as in years past, Yahoo’s Jeff Passan notes (on Twitter). In the previous five drafts, 16 players obtained $6MM or more, but Byron Buxton may be the only player to sign for $6MM this year, now that the new collective bargaining agreement is in place. Here are today’s noteworthy draft signings from the second round and on…

  • The Indians announced that they signed second round selection Mitch Brown. The high school right-hander obtained an over-slot bonus of $800K, MLBTR has learned. Adam Karon and Tripper Johnson of Sosnick/Cobbe Sports represent Brown, who entered the draft as the 44th-best eligible prospect, according to Baseball America.
  • The Brewers signed second rounder Tyrone Taylor for $750K, Jim Callis of Baseball America reports (on Twitter). MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy had reported earlier in the week that the Brewers were nearing a deal with the athletic high school outfielder.
  • The Rockies announced that they have agreed to sign 28 selections, including their top six picks and 12 of their first 14 selections (Twitter link).
  • The Red Sox announced that they have signed 11 picks, including second rounder Jamie Callahan and fourth rounder Ty Buttrey. Callahan obtained a $600K bonus, according to Callis (on Twitter). Buttrey obtained an over-slot bonus of $1.3MM, Callis tweets.
  • The Mets signed fourth rounder Branden Kaupe for $225K, Callis reports (Twitter link). The switch-hitting shortstop has very good speed, according to Baseball America.

Yankees Sign Austin Aune

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 15, 2012 at 2:22pm CDT

The Yankees signed second round selection Austin Aune for a $1MM bonus, Jim Callis of Baseball America reports (on Twitter). The Yankees selected the high school shortstop/outfielder 89th overall in last week's draft.

MLB recommends a bonus of $548K for the selection, so Aune's bonus will account for a disproportionate chunk of the Yankees' draft budget. Aune had been recruited to play quarterback at TCU, Callis adds.

Phillies Sign Jason Pridie

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 15, 2012 at 2:18pm CDT

The Phillies signed Jason Pridie, according to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com (on Twitter). The Athletics granted Pridie his release earlier this month, making him a free agent.

Pridie signed with the A's last offseason but didn't play a game in the Oakland organization following a 50-game suspension for a drug violation. The 28-year-old appeared in 101 games for the Mets last year, posting a .231/.309/.370 batting line in 236 plate appearances and playing all three outfield positions. He is a Sosnick/Cobbe client.

Braves Designate Livan Hernandez For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 15, 2012 at 1:57pm CDT

The Braves designated right-hander Livan Hernandez for assignment, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The Braves called Kris Medlen up from Triple-A in a related move.

The Braves now have ten days to trade Hernandez, release him, or, if he consents, assign him to the minor leagues. The team had been calling around trying to move Hernandez, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Hernandez, 37, signed a Major League deal with the Braves in March, not long after the Astros released him. He posted a 4.94 ERA with 5.5 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 31 innings out of the bullpen for Atlanta.

Knobler On Pirates, Brewers, Morneau

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 15, 2012 at 12:30pm CDT

The trade market remains relatively quiet, but it’s starting to take shape, as Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com explains. Here are some details from Knobler:

  • Pirates GM Neal Huntington said this week that "you can't buy when people aren't selling." The 32-30 Pirates figure to be looking for offense this summer.
  • The Brewers are simultaneously preparing for the possibility of becoming sellers and suggesting they could become buyers. They’ve told their scouts to identify prospects to target in the farm systems of contending teams, yet they won’t necessarily sell. They remain interested in keeping Zack Greinke, whose contract expires after the season.
  • Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos asked the Twins about Justin Morneau, Knobler reports. Yet as one unnamed executive told Knobler “Alex calls about everyone." The Blue Jays are said to be particularly interested in Morneau, according to Knobler.

Red Sox Sign Pat Light

By Zachary Links | June 15, 2012 at 11:45am CDT

The Red Sox have officially signed supplemental first rounder Pat Light, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com.  The hard-throwing right-hander out of Monmouth University agreed to a bonus of $1MM, shy of the $1.394MM bonus earmarked for the No. 37 pick.

Light routinely worked in the mid-90s in college and flashed fastballs of 96 mph and better at the end of games last season.  The right-hander posted a 2.40 ERA in his junior year with 102 strikeouts and just 16 walks across 101.1 innings.

The Red Sox also signed second-round pick Jamie Callahan, a hard-throwing right-hander from Dillon High School in South Carolina.  The amount of the 17-year-old's bonus is unknown.

Indians To Sign Tyler Naquin

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 15, 2012 at 11:10am CDT

The Indians agreed to sign first round pick Tyler Naquin, Kendall Rogers of Perfect Game USA reports (on Twitter). The Texas A&M outfielder will obtain a bonus of $1.75MM.

Naquin "was one of the best pure hitters and had one of the strongest outfield arms in this year's draft," Jim Callis of Baseball America writes. MLB recommended a $2.25MM bonus for the 15th overall selection, so the Indians save toward their draft cap with the deal.
