Quick Hits: Giants, Dodgers, Mets, Red Sox

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 25, 2012 at 4:46pm CDT

The latest trade rumors from around MLB…

  • The Giants are still looking for bullpen help, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter), They had some interest in Francisco Rodriguez until they saw him pitch recently and they don't view Jonathan Broxton as the solution, Knobler reports.
  • GM Ned Colletti says the Dodgers are far from done, and will continue to look for a starter and a position player, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets.
  • The Mets would listen to offers for Scott Hairston and Tim Byrdak, but only for pieces who could help them next year, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports (on Twitter).
  • The Red Sox would like to obtain a right-handed bat, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe tweets. We covered more Red Sox rumors in a pair of AL East posts today.

Ha! Guess they should go after Greinke then after watching him hit a HR off Lee.

My thoughts exactly. Outfield is log jammed as it is so no fit there. Could do addition by subtraction and trade Shoppach and call up Lavarnway to split time with Salty…

Good point. If they really wanted a RH bat that badly they could have called him up to DH while Ortiz was out.

No kidding. They need an arm way before they need another bat. I also agree they need to get Lavarnway up, stat!

The Mets need to make Wright available. They’ve messed up their season. They can bring him back next year when he voids his option and get something for him now

Wrights highest value would be in the offseason. if he is traded this season he will be a 2 month rental and he will void the option and become a free agent. Trading him in January will give the acquiring team a whole year of Wright.

the mets have to add Murphy, Duda, and even Dickie to that list if they want players in return to help them in 2013.

prospects, the Mets are very thin in the farm system and with the real team. They might not like it but they need to trade good players for numbers of good players to ever be real good again

Im a Mets fan but lets face it R.A. is a good pitcher and a great story this year but thats not a guy you wanna build around for the future.

Only rumors for the Giants in the past week have been bullpen rumors, while our offense is below average with no power. sigh

Still have needed offensive help for years. That still hasn’t been addressed. They need it this year and without it they may not go far in the playoffs. The Dodgers with Hanley will be big spenders this offseason. Doesn’t look good.

Hitting gets you there, pitching puts you over the top. The hot pitchers win in the playoffs. Good pitching beats good hitting in the playofffs. Ask the Phillies, the last 2 years.

I’m quite aware, however, we don’t have good hitting.

Zack Lee in AA would not be bad, has talent but has not looked good , potential he can learn how to use it, prospects are always a gamble. The mets are set with Wheeler, Harvey, Niese, Gee, Dicky, Pelfrey(6th) maybe he could eventually be a spot starter or long man for them if he can improve

It’s too bad that Sabean seems to plan his vacations from July 10th – 30th every year, then spits coffee on his computer screen on the morning of the 31st when he realizes the deadline is near.
I’d love to hear his excuses this year about why no trades are happening when it seems that most other teams are shooting fish in a barrel.
Here’s hoping that another Cody Ross falls into our lap by sheer, dumb luck.

Giants should just use George Kontos more and see what they have. They might have a solid setup man right underneath their noses and not even realize it.

His 20 ks to 2 BB are good signs. I believe they are breaking him in for next season after Affeldt leaves. His slider isn’t as devastating as Romo’s but it is really good.
