Indians Designate Shelley Duncan For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | August 29, 2012 at 2:04pm CDT

The Indians have designated Shelley Duncan for assignment, the team announced. The move creates room on the roster for Jeanmar Gomez, who was recalled from Triple-A.

Duncan, 32, hit .203/.288/.388 with 11 homers in 264 plate appearances for Cleveland this season. He's a .229/.306/.427 career hitter in 933 big league plate appearances, including a .243/.319/.428 line against left-handers. Duncan has experience in both corner outfield spots as well as first base.

poor guy, he’s never been quite good enough to stay in the “big league” anywhere. good luck to his future…somewhere.

This is likely what Sabean is left with for the Giants- and because of the perceived desperation on his part they’ll have to part with more to get him or anyone else.

My feeling is that the Giants bring up Nady and finally put Freddy Sanchez on the 60 Day DL to make room. Anyone else that falls through waivers to them is extremely lucky to do so.

Yep, i don’t see why Nady isn’t here already over JC just in case miracles happen and he goes on a Burrell like tear so they can add him to the PS roster.

Agree, Because Shelley Duncan is cheap. but can bring nice returns if he is given playing time.

Possibly- he won’t get that with the Giants though and for that reason they likely won’t pick him up. I’m just disgusted not only with Cabrera but with Sabean’s lack of foresight, an injury to an OFer could’ve put them in the same position.

What makes you think that? I’m not being snarky, I’m really curious. I’ve been watching him play in Cleveland for three years and he never really showed he was anything but a poor fielding 4th outfielder. Given that he is 32 years old and is only hitting a tad over the Mendoza line, I’m skeptical that he has much left in the tank.

I would think that Shelley Duncan can be an option for The SF Giants as He does have Power and is a Outfielder/1st Baseman. I would give a flyer on him. We need a power hitter so badly.

So does/did Cleveland. It certainly didn’t stop them from DFA’ing him.

Giants don’t waste your time. He is a washed up fielder and hitter. If you throw anything other than a fastball he will easily strike out of pop up in the infield. He has no strong arm from left or right and has the range of someone 3 times his age.

Considering Teixeira’s injury, that the Yankees clearly have zero faith in Casey McGahee and that started Stephen Pearce at 1B and DH (batting 4th and 5th) the last 2 days, I think New York would be a good destination for Shelley.

Pearce hit 6th today and McGahee was sent down when Pearce acquired. He’s not on the roster right now. He’ll be back 9/1. There is zero room on the MLB roster for Shelley Duncan. Maybe he can help in Scranton.

Yup 6th – you were right. But McGahee has been awful (hence why they needed to reacquire Pearce at all) and I’d argue Duncan is a significantly more potent (and versatile) bench bat.

I forgot that Shelley Duncan was still in the majors, let alone playing. He was definitely going to be a non-tender. But I wonder why a position player was not brought up to evaluate the future. Duncan may be done.

Yanks need right handed bats for the stretch run and they’ll surely look at him. I just don’t know how much he can help. Can we do a package deal for his father too?

Tigers might want to pick him up to add some bench strength. Duncan is that type of player to help them off the bench.
