Reds Designate Mike Costanzo For Assignment

By Mike Axisa | August 1, 2012 at 5:39pm CDT

The Reds have designated Mike Costanzo for assignment, the team announced (on Twitter). The move creates room on the roster for Dioner Navarro.

Costanzo, 28, had one single and one walk in 21 plate appearances for Cincinnati this season, good for a .056/.095/.056 batting line. The infielder was involved in two high profile trades in 2007, first the Brad Lidge–Michael Bourn swap and then the Miguel Tejada–Luke Scott deal.

I know it is an extremely small sample size but that is one of the ugliest lines I have ever seen in my life

Sadly, that only tells part of the story.

I look at it like this … there are many guys who toiled in the minors for several years who never sniffed an at bat in the majors. Mike got to live his dream for 21 ABs regardless of the results.

There are 62 pitchers with 20 or more plate appearances this year with better lines. Wow.

Thought he was going to be a player back in 07 after the year he had a AA Reading. I thought at the very least it would be a bench bat. But alas that was the high water mark.

Keep in mind that he hit one to straight out center in Houston that just turned into a fly out. A 471 foot fly out. Felt so bad for the guy

Mike was brought up to pinch hit which is a pretty tough assignment for any player. He only started 1 game. I still hope he gets another shot under better circumstances

Mesoraco on 7 Day DL with a concussion, the three games will be after that.
