Central Notes: Cubs, Hernandez, Tigers, Hart

By Zachary Links | December 11, 2013 at 4:59pm CDT

The latest out of the AL and NL Central..

  • The Cubs are among the teams with interest in Roberto Hernandez, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
  • Brewers GM Doug Melvin says that he'll look for a true first baseman to replace Corey Hart, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (on Twitter). "I'd like to find a first baseman who can play first. We've had so many guys who haven't played first," said the GM.
  • The Brewers topped out around $8MM for Hart, according to Haudricourt (on Twitter).
  • Cubs president Theo Epstein says the club has offers out to a free agent starter, a free agent offer, and a trade offer for a hitter, tweets Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. Theo added that he has other trade talks taking place as well.
  • Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski says he's never had a conversation with the Dodgers about Matt Kemp, tweets Jason Beck of MLB.com.
  • Dombrowski also noted that the Tigers haven't ruled out signing Max Scherzer this offseason, tweets John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press.
  • After initially being caught off guard by the trade, Adam Eaton says he's confident and ready for a fresh start with the White Sox, writes Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com.

Is this the real Roberto Hernandez or the Fake Fausto Carmona they might want to do a DNA test before finalizing a contract.

I’m tired of people without knowledge pretending they know somebody made a mistake that hurt nobody. Do you know the ins and outs of false identities? How do you know what he gained at someone’s expense?

Scherzer and Dirks for Hulzten/Maurer and Zunino. Mariners get to keep there star young pitchers and get ace and OF. Then one of Vehagen/Thompson/Ross, McCann and Worth for 5 million a year and Either.

And who pitches for the Tigers?

Hulzten or Maurer. Maurer looked bad by numbers but he had one of the worst defenses, even worse than the Tigers and now the Tigers have a good defense. His xfip was415 or425.

      Do not want Either….
I’d like Zunino, but we’d also likely need to toss Avilia in the mix to replace Zunino.

Ya I like Avila but could we maybe give them Holaday instead and Eithier would be a great platoon with Rajai, oil line up

        Right/left
        Kinsler
        Hunter/Davis
        Cabrera
        Martinez
        Eithier/Hunter
        Castellanos
        Avila/Zunino
        Jackson
        Iggy

        Rotation
        Verlander
        Sanchez
        Porcello
        Smyly
        Hulzten/Paxton
        I like that tea .

Zunino is going to be good, I wouldn’t want to split his time. And I think Dirks has the potential to be every bit as good as Either(and he absolutely has a better glove) for a fraction of the cost.
I also wouldn’t drop Cabrera down in the line up. You should have you best hitter getting more at bats. If you really went with an advanced metrics look, Cabrera would be batting 2nd… but I’m fine with 3.

        • Tigers72

Cabrera always has been batting 3rd. Either has an okay glove and we need a lefty bat with power and either has a lot more power than Dirks. Dirks is nice but I don’t think he should be getting the most at bats. I heard Zunino might have been rushed so I would like in the begging of the year to just have him bet against leftys so he can build confidence and continue to develop. Other than that would these trades be fair. You seem to be a good talent evaluated so tell me what you think.

        • EightMileCats

My mistake, I read your lineup and for whatever reason thought you had dropped Cabrera to 4.

I think you should relook at Either’s supposed power. He hit only hit 16 or 17 HRs last year, it’s not necessarily a lot more… and he comes at 17 Mil per year(or 12 if the Dodgers do send that kind’ve money).

Outside of that, I really don’t see any reason to hang onto Avila if you have Zunino, Holliday would be a sufficient back up and may be better defensively than Avila at this point. Holliday doesn’t justify a starting job and if the M’s ship out Zunino, they have no viable starting catcher. I almost think Avila is required to get them to even think about it.

I do think shipping Scherzer and Avila is enough to net you Zunino and a pitching prospect from the M’s outside of Walker/Paxton. I still have zero interest in Either on the strong side of a platoon for reasons stated above(too expensive for a platoon player, bad glove/range, below average power, horrible against LHP).

        • Tigers72

Okay thank you I just like Eithier because I think he can bat in the middle of the line up and Dorks is more if a two hitter and we need a lefty middle of the lineup bat. Who so you think we could get, I would say Brown but he would probably cost Smyly++ and I don’t want to give up that.

        • EightMileCats

I’m not sure there is a lefty MOTO bat available. I believe we are going to run with Dirks… if he can come anywhere near what he did in 2012, he will be a mid order bat.

        • Tigers72

What about a reunion with Joyce? Maybe Vehagen for him straight up.

        • Tigers72

There is also Nick Markakis. He is expensive but maybe Verhagen for him and enough money to get him down to ten million a year.

        • EightMileCats

I suppose I wouldn’t be overly opposed, but Dirks may be better(if coming off that nagging injury from last season is really what was holding him down).

Matt Joyce 2013: .235/.328/.419 with OPS .747 and 18 HR
          2012: .241/.341/.429 with OPS .769 and 17 HR
          2011: .277/.347/.478 with OPS .825 and 19 HR

          Andy Dirks 2013: .256/.323/.363 with OPS .686 and 9 HR(supposed injury)
          2012: .322/.370/.487 with OPS .857 and 8 HR
          2011: .251/.296/.406 with OPS .703 (225 ABs)

I just think Dirks has the higher ceiling, but he’s been labelled poorly by the general fanbase as bad. I’ve been one to call him a AAAA OF until I really looked at it. Dirks has the higher ceiling… and while his power isn’t anything to write home about, he could be a double machine on a team with some decent base running speed. TBH, there aren’t many LH corner OF I’d swap Dirks out with. Jay Bruce, Choo(but not at his contract demands), Jason Heyward, Bryce Harper, maybe Reddick, maybe Markakais, CarGo, and Alex Gordon.
(Domonic Brown gets an honorable mention, but I’m not sure if he’s for real or just had a Chris Shelton-esque month).

Most of those players aren’t available at any price(Bruce, Heyward, Harper, CarGo, Gordon). And I’m very doubtful the O’s listen on Markakais or if the A’s listen on Reddick.

I’m ok with Dirks to be honest

        • Tigers72

I get Dirks can be good and he has a good ceiling but I never heard about that injury and I thought that Dirks was ever going to return to his 2012 numbers but a 280-290 15-25 SB 10-15 HR guy which is nice but after losing Fielder we need a middle of the order lefty bat even if it is only against rightys.

        • EightMileCats

We still have a big 1-2 punch with Cabrera and Vmart. We’ve lost some power, but for every HR Fielder hit last year; how many runs did he cost us with silly base running errors or fielding errors.
If we could get Markakais without giving up Castellanos, Fields, or Thompson… I’m ok with it. But I honestly expect the OF we have now is what we’ll be seeing in April. Dirks/Davis is left, Ajax in center, and Hunter in right.

        • Tigers72

Yea I get that we are probably going to have Dirks in left and I am ok with that because he should be a good 2 hitter but I just think that the Tigers have to many right handed starting players.

I’ve never had a discussion with the Dodgers about Matt Kemp either. So I guess that makes two of us.
