Quick Hits: Brewers, Angels, Dodgers, Astros

By | July 26, 2014 at 9:57pm CDT

Brewers GM Doug Melvin says he’s “been pretty aggressive as far as contacting teams,” but the trade front remains quiet, per Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel. Melvin reportedly checked in on right-handed setup men, but found the market lacking. According to Melvin, two players who surprisingly may not be dealt are LaTroy Hawkins and Chad Qualls.

  • The Angels were active early and often in this season’s trade market, and GM Jerry Dipoto thinks the club is ready to stand pat, tweets Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com. Per Dipoto, “We really like our team. The likelihood is that we’ll do nothing, but we will stay in touch.”
  • With rumors swirling, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti thinks a trade for an elite pitcher is “unlikely,” writes Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. Colletti is loath to part with any of his top prospects, including Joc Pederson, Corey Seager, and Julio Urias. In discussing Pederson, Colletti notes that he isn’t ready to contribute to a pennant race. Hitting southpaws and trimming his strikeout rate top Pederson’s to-do list.
  • The Astros have a handful of relievers to market this July, including Qualls, Josh Fields, and Tony Sipp. The Houston Chronicle’s Evan Drellich reports that the trio of relievers continue to draw plenty of offers. It’s interesting to see this juxtaposed with Melvin’s expectations that the Astros intend to keep Qualls.

Reliever market is always fairly quiet till the end. Good to see Melvin trying to make a 2011 K-Rod type move. Brewers could really use a nice set up arm and some kind of bench bat.

Colletti should trade Pederson and Urias for Price. Prospects rarely realize their ceiling and Price is young, has proven to be a legit ace, consistent, underpaid, team controllable for next season, and would likely be easily extendable.

Colletti should trade Kershaw and Kemp for Bedard. Prospects rarely realize their ceiling and Bedard is young, has proven to be a legit ace, consistent, underpaid, team controllable for next season, and would likely be easily extendable.

Yes, the Dodgers could easily sign price to a contract extension.

So trade a CF which the dodgers need for ace which dodgers don’t need. Doesn’t don’t need another ace they need just a pitcher who better then what they have at the 4th and 5th spot and bullpen help is a much bigger need then starting pitching. I’ll take the As pitcher who wants out over getting price

Idk if you could find a better #4 pitcher than Josh Beckett this year. I’d agree that if they wanna boost anyone from the rotation it should be Haren

He might not be better then Beckett but dodgers I think should look at tommy milone. His stats aren’t david price like. But pitches like a 4th/5th pitcher

Well many prospects have over the years trout, Harper etc.. Dodgers shouldn’t give up on a prospect just because there a chance he won’t pan out. Keep him and see what happens. It be worst if they trade him and he does well just like Carlos Santana did well when we traded him. Dodgers trade their prospects you can say we might be Philly 2.0 a lot of vets and nothing else to help build the team

Besides the fact that this wouldn’t make sense for either team at this time, you make great points.

Someone tell Ned that Ethier and Crawford are the ones that can’t hit LHP. Pederson? He’s batting .298/.412/.540 against them. Ridiculous he’s still in Triple-A.

Gonzalez also has a horrible slashline vs LHP. (.179/.239/.229)

Yeah, 17 and 19 mill respectively at triple A doesnt make sense for any team. Especially if you can showcase them at the Bigs and hope to trade 1.

Neither Ethier nor Crawford can be sent to AAA.

Which is why it makes no sense to trade Kemp, and bringing up Pederson is a guarantee of nothing. We know batting lines in the PCL don’t mean a heck of a lot, and if management thinks he still has work to do, then as fans I think we have to take their word for it.

I think dodgers should at least trade ethier his bat not helping much and dodgers would be better off giving skyle more time. Defense wouldn’t be any better but dodgers wouldn’t have ethier decling bat.

Ethier becomes expendable if the experiment of playing Puig in CF works out. In fact I think that may very well be why Puig is playing center this weekend, not that any of the wise owls in the sports media have taken any notice.

It makes sense if they can get Lester. I’ve seen enough of Pederson in person to be confident he’ll be just fine. Rather deal Ethier and Crawford of course, but no one is interested.

Is it ned who doesn’t want to trade them or are the owners making sure he does mess up the farm.

Or maybe everyone is on the same page? With the previous ownership, Colletti had little money to work with and a pretty bare cupboard in the minors due to years of disinvestment in the farm and scouting.

It’s great that Qualls and Hawkins will not be moved as both teams really need to hold onto their closers because…wait, I think I’m about to lose my own argument.
