Tigers Acquire David Price In 3-Team Deal With Rays, Mariners

By Jeff Todd | July 31, 2014 at 3:45pm CDT

The Tigers have officially agreed to acquire David Price from the Rays, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The deal is a three-way trade between the Tigers, Rays, and Mariners.

MLB: Milwaukee Brewers at Tampa Bay RaysTigers center fielder Austin Jackson will go to the Mariners, with Nick Franklin (from Seattle) and Drew Smyly (from Detroit) heading to Tampa in the blockbuster. Minor league shortstop Willy Adames is also going to Tampa from Detroit in the deal, per a tweet from Rosenthal.

The move brings and end to near-ceaseless speculation regarding the now-former Rays lefty, who has been one of the game’s best pitchers in recent seasons. Still only 28, Price is under control for one more season through arbitration, though he will certainly not come cheap.

Playing this year on a $14MM salary, Price will be in line for a big raise next year. Of course, one key element of his value lies in the fact that his new club will have an opportunity to explore an extension. The reason that Price figures to draw a big salary next year is obvious: he has continued to be outstanding. At present, he owns a 3.11 ERA with a remarkable 10.0 K/9 against just 1.2 BB/9 over 170 2/3 innings.

The return for the Rays is not particularly splashy, but delivers obvious value. Smyly, 25, was outstanding last year as a reliever and has since converted into a solid starting option. He carries a 3.77 ERA through 100 1/3 innings, with 7.8 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 and a 36.9% groundball rate. While his strikeout numbers are down since moving to the rotation, he can be controlled through 2018.

The 23-year-old Franklin, meanwhile, seemed without a future in Seattle after the club added Robinson Cano. Though he has spent time at both short and second, many observers believe he is better suited for the keystone going forward. He had a solid 2013 at the MLB level (.225/.303/.382 in 412 plate appearances), and though his numbers were off this year in limited action, Franklin has continued to swing a big stick against Triple-A pitchers.

Then, there is Adames, who could be something of a wild card in the deal. Just 18, he has a promising .269/.346/.428 slash line through 400 plate appearances at the low-A level this year. He entered the year as Baseball America’s 30th-ranked Tigers prospect, but appears to be raising eyebrows around the game.

That brings us to Seattle, which quietly managed to address its center field need without giving up an indispensable piece of the future. In fact, the 27-year-old Jackson will be at least a mid-term piece for Seattle. He is playing on a $6MM salary this year before hitting arbitration for the final time. He currently sports a .270/.330/.397 line that is approximately league average (as it was last year). With solid contributions in the field and on the bases, he is certainly an above-average big league regular.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com first reported that Jackson and Smyly were part of the deal (via Twitter). Mike Salk of 710 ESPN tweeted that Jackson would head to Seattle. Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune first reported Franklin’s inclusion (via Twitter).

big difference. Why trade for Price just to lose Scherzer? That’s not really an upgrade for this season which the Tigers are actually going for (The Red Sox are future planning).

Price has 1 more year of control, and a year’s worth of time to extend him for $$$ Scherzer turned down. Tigers get comp pick for Schezer when he walks. It’s a huge upgrade this season because they both get to pitch in the same rotation.

How does adding price to a rotation of Verlander, Scherzer, Sanchez, Porcello not improve them for this year exactly?

Because one of those guys will not be in the rotation come October and yet they still won’t have a guy in the BP that can get lefties out.

Price is the best lefty in the AL right now. I’ll take him over Lester. Plus, he’s under contract for 2015, and Lester is a free agent at the end of the season. I’m a Rays fan and deeply disappointed that this is all the Rays managed to get back for Price.

Mike Trout strikes out too much. Great player, but he’s ESPN’s hype machine now. As long as you don’t pitch him down in the zone, you can get him out. He can’t handle pitches up. Classic low-ball hitter.

The Jays are still kickin around somewhere too, we did sweep those A’s in a 4 game series and the Tigers right after. Granted it was before they got Shark and now Lester and Price but our offense, if clicking, is the best in the Majors. Especially with the trade deadline “acquisitions” of Edwin Encarnacion, Brett Lawrie and righty masher Adam Lind we should be fine. If Stroman can keep up his performance and our bull pen stays how its been during the second half of the year we’ll be in pretty much every game.

So the White Sox do nothing, don’t get rid of dead weight, don’t pick up any body and now the best pitcher in baseball goes to their rival despite the Tigers having a worse farm system than the Sox. White Sox might as well go all in on a full rebuild and trade Sale, Quintana, Abreu et al in the offseason and just try to restock. They are going to be bad for a long time.

I dont see why tho, Smyly has a chance to be almost as good as Price in fact if going by WAR Price has been pretty overrated except for 1 year.

        Reply
        • Yankees420

Looking exclusively at one stat is rather erroneous, especially when there’s been disputes over how well WAR really judges a pitcher’s value.

Also if you used bWAR it shows Price’s career as a roller coaster (which I believe is b/c they use ERA+, but I’m not quite sure) whereas fWAR has Price as a consistent 4-5 win pitcher every year since 2010.

Look at his other stats – In ’11 and ’12 his K/BB rates were nearly identical – 3.46 to 3.47. In ’13 he learned to walk significantly less batters, which caused a slight drop in his K/9, but his K/BB skyrocketed to 5.59. This year it’s sitting at 8.22 because he’s maintained his control (BB/9 of 1.21) but increased his K/9 from 7.2 to 9.9. The guy is a stud and is truly learning how to pitch rather than always relying on his “stuff.”

Smyly has a long way to go before he “has the chance to be almost as good as Price.” Assuming we’re talking about Smyly staying as a SP – I agree his RP numbers are impressive.

Yes good points. However (and I agree that the Rays shoulve gotten more for Price), Price has never had a season where he beat Cliff Lee’s best seson(s). Cliff Lee has 2 years left on his deal @ $25M and yet I feel that the trade market would value the 2 very very differently

keep in mind also the Rays are definitely in the running this year and this helps them NOW AND in the future, as they can slot Franklin and Smyly right into their club without having to wait. The Mets had a good strategy here, this was a very weak trade deadline as far return in terms of prospects

For all the people saying the Rays didn’t get enough, this is Andrew Friedman we are talking about. He obviously saw something he liked in both Franklin and Smyly and good for him for getting the guys he wants. As a Tigers fan, I can tell you Smyly has the potential to be an elite starting pitcher. I was really hoping we didn’t deal him and were able to keep him as a dominant lefty out of the pen. As for Franklin, he looked like a burgeoning power hitter at a tough position last year with the Mariners before he cooled off and lost his opportunity abruptly. If the Rays can bring that out of him again, this could be a very good deal.

The fact is the market has adjusted. Several years ago, sure, you’d get multiple top prospects for the final two years of an elite SP, e.g. Adam Jones/Chris Tillman + 2 others for Erik Bedard. Times have changed. Teams are now properly valuing prospects, which is why you’re seeing more trades involving major league players rather than prospects (e.g. Cespedes and Smyly). I think everyone saying the Rays got fleeced is living in the past. This is the new market reality.

There were some really bad deals made today by a few teams and the Rays just caped off the worst of the bunch after an afternoon of the Red Sox making one bad deal after another. Believe it or not, but the Yanks and Tigers are clear winners this year. The Yanks got McCarthy, Headley, Drew, and Prado for virtually nothing. The Tigers, well, I am still wrapping my head around that. The Red Sox got worse now, next year and in 2016.

Yes; it really is. By the time most get out of work in Tampa, fight traffic to go home and get the kids then turn to fight traffic again for easily 30-45 minutes or more…the game has already started. To do this 82 times a year is crazy. The dome is surrounded halfway by water and the other 50% does not have enough households to fill the stadium in a 10 mile radius. Take the same percentage of people that go to the game now and put it were the people are in Tampa and using the same percentage and you will double the attendance nightly. The main question is how does it get paid for and what does it take to payoff the lease in St. Pete.

If all the Mariners have had to give up for Austin Jackson, Kendrys Morales and Chris Dinorfia is Nick Franklin, Steven Pryor, Abraham Almonte and minor-league pitcher Stephen Kohlscheen, I think that’s pretty decent. Not glamorous moves, but the M’s have a more reliable everyday guy in CF now, and a better backup OF who has hit lefties well in his career. (And a DH who might start hitting at some point!) 🙂

You have to wonder how much of this DD planned for this blockbuster in the offseason for this year and 2015 in the event that they couldn’t resign Scherzer. Trades Fister away to show the league what Smyly can do, trades Fielder away and relies on Castellanos and JD Martinez replacing Fielder offense, gets Kinsler to be the new leadoff hitter instead of Austin Jackson, and surprisingly signs Rajai Davis to a two year deal (who can play CF and effectively replace Austin Jackson production). Not saying he could predict Austin Jackson and Smyly would net this much talent, but still, impressive.

Unless I’m missing something, the Mariners only control Jackson through 2015, and he’ll be in his last year of arbitration, which means he’s probably going to get a raise to something like $9 million. He’s a useful asset, but it’s not like they’re getting him for multiple pre-arbitration years or anything.

My point was merely that saying “the Mariners got a great CF for nick franklin” isn’t the full story. If you’re getting Austin Jackson two years ago, when he still had 3 years of team control, that’s very different from getting him now. You also have to look at what else Franklin might have brought in return. Can’t just say that because he didn’t have a future here that Seattle couldn’t have gotten a better return from someone else.

For the record, I agree it’s a good trade. Jackson’s unlikely to sign a long-term deal since he’s a Boras client, but even if he doesn’t sign long-term, you extend him the qualifying offer and either sign him or get a draft pick. Just think people need to look at the full context to properly evaluate the trade.

Scherzer turned down an extension before the season. They’ve been planning for him to bounce all season and for this price got a steal. They can use the $$$ they offered scherzer to sign price easily. Like I said a verlander price Sanchez Porcello rotation is better than a verlander Sanchez Porcello rotation so yes they are improved passed this, season

To sign Price easily? That’s laughable. Just like u said earlier who would be interested in David Price? Most GM’s. They could wind up only getting him for next season but that’s better than not having him or scherzer next year but my point is and it’s very valid that beyond the rest of this season the Tigers rotation did not improve.

You don’t think they traded for him with the intent of signing him long term? Lol that’s laughable. So if they didn’t get price and lost scherzer their rotation would be worse, correct? So getting price at least keeps a good rotation stable and not get worse so I’m correct in what I’m saying. Scherzer is older than price so signing him long term makes less sense than signing price long term. I never made the assumption that their rotation got better did i? They are improved passed this year in that they will have a rotation with price next year instead of a rotation without price or scherzer which is precisely why the tigers made this move.

Friedman REALLY needs to lay off the hard stuff prior to future trade deadlines. Seriously, it’s hard to comprehend how he felt compelled to move Price now, for this return, after holding onto him for so long in hopes of maximizing said return. Even with the Tigers #3 prospect included, it’s still an incredibly weak return for an ace signed through the end of next season.

For Torres the Rays got Brad Boxberger ( 4hits 0ER in his last 15.1 innings),
An A-ball infielder hitting .300, A utility infielder barely hitting his weight and a borderline MLB ready pitcher with a 3.5+ ERA.

For Price they got: An A-ball infielder hitting .269, A utility infielder barely hitting his weight (in the majors) and a borderline MLB pitcher with a 3.5+ ERA.

I’m not sure why everyone is saying the Rays got robbed. They gave up 1.33 years of Price for 6 years of Franklin who had a .800+ OPS in the minors, 4.33 years of a young pitcher who has already generated 6.2 career bWAR, and an up and coming SS prospect who is hitting well in low A while being the youngest player in the league.

it is not at all (I think it is an entirely overrated stat and I like OPS better) but WAR certainly is not the end all stat either.
A .649 career OPS and an OBP .291 in 416 AB’s is hard to swallow.
I like Franklin and think he has a good up side but it doesn’t change the thinking that the Rays should had gotten more.
The Mariners got a good deal though.

True, but before today we were hearing the Rays wanted can’t miss top notch prospects like Seager, Urias, Pederson, Taveras, etc. To get two guys who you have to describe as “far from useless” and “useful” instead is quite a downgrade.

      “800+ OPS in the minors.”
That is all fine. But that is the minors and not the majors. Their are NUMEROUS of players in the minors that can have an 800+ OPS but they never amount to anything in the majors.

I’m not saying Franklin won’t be anything in the majors but for a legit Ace in David Price that you can have next year, I’m expecting a bit more of a return. I’m not even a Rays fan and I think this…

Franklin is a 23 year old slashing .294/.392/.455 in AAA this year. You can’t look only at his major league stats. Have to project what he’s going to be in a few years in the majors. Rays got absolutely fleeced in this deal. Talks of Joc Pederson, Corey Seager, Oscar Taveras, Shelby Miller, Julio Urias. All they got is a middling infielder in Franklin and a number 3 starter in Smyly. Compared to the haul they got for Garza and Shields this is nothing. It really shows you why Epstein said yes as soon as Addison Russell was included for Samardzija.

Even if Moore isn’t ready, you still have prospects Karns and Romero at AAA who wouldn’t be that much if at all worse than Smyly. Still scratching my head. Definitely an eyebrow raising move, but time tends to prove Friedman more right than wrong.

On the Tigers side, clearly they’ve entered into an arms race with the A’s and I’m just praying now for an A’s/Tigers ALCS. But in the long term, can they afford Scherzer next season? With the addition of Price who could cost between $18M-$20M next year they have about $115M on the books already and I’m pretty sure that’s 7 contracts.

In this deal the Rays get a mid-rotation starter, a disappointing former elite prospect, and a fast-rising elite SS prospect. It’s not a good return for Price, but it’s in the ballpark.

I just don’t see the point in this trade now. You could have received similar value at the end of the year compared to this from someone, and still given the Rays a small remote chance of making the playoffs this year. This wasn’t a bowl me over type of trade the justifies giving up this season. Plus you essentially traded away a comp pick as well. Horrible, just horrible.

No we don’t. Price would have been a luxury. Being a Mets fan you seen our pitching and it is damn good. Apart from three or four guys we can’t get any hits on offense. M’s should still look to acquire another bat in August or wait for Saunders to come back.

Surprised Ackley is still there to be honest, and while the Pitching is good with potential to be really good, a lot riding on an unproven back end moving forward. C Young has already pitched more innings then the last 6 years

Ackley has been our hottest hitter in July (if not than our second hottest hitter). He was the least of our problems though as he is a .700 OPS hitter and plays good defense. While our CF/RF/1B/DH have an OPS below .700.

I understand that C. Young last pitched this many innings 6 years from now but the M’s should not be really concerned about him. He is a FA at the end of the year. Ride him for a chance to get to the playoffs. Besides he does not look like he is starting to get tired on the mound but looking stronger and stronger as the season goes on.

I have always liked CY, the way he adjusts in game. Many, more talented pitchers could learn something from him.
From this distance though insurance innings, back end rotation type seems like it could be very useful there. Granted I only get to see a handful of M’s games a year.

As for Ackley, aside from a really good start and recent hot streak, I felt like he is a prime change of scenery guy. Great swing, quick, probably could hit more HR in a different ballpark, but still should be a doubles -gap hitter. Again as a fan from a distance I see an under performing player who just hasn’t had all things click at once yet.

I agree regarding Ackley, but if he has a .700 OPS while we have struggling hitters at other positions there is no real hurry to get rid of him. Besides change of scenery type trades are usually done over the winter.

He has a very pretty swing but his eye is often too good for his own good and gets called out on borderline pitches just a bit outside. Also when Ackley hits (like he is right now) he hits the other way very often. The times he struggles is when he pulls everything…

Cubs should of flipped Russel and Arrieta for Price. That deal would of been better for the Rays. Heck, I would of been fine with them adding someone else to the deal for price. I for sure thought it was going to take more highly regarded prospects then what they got.

Sure it does, getting an ace pitcher on a team that lacks starting pitching, they have the money to extend price if needed and he would be the veteran piece among a team full of young guys.

Pretty bold assumption that Price would be an automatic extension for a team like the Cubs in a clear rebuild. Do you really think an ace like Price wants to be at the head of a rebuild project when he’s already sniffed the World Series?

I think he would go for it because by the time his contract runs out they should have the main pieces in the farm either in the majors or on the brink of breaking out and once those prospects arrive it will most likely be a great team, and plus the appeal of helping to lead the cubs to their first world series in over 100 years might be a factor also.

He wouldn’t but the Cubs do have the money that it would take to sign him for a long term extension. Not sure if he wants to head a rebuild just depends if Price is after the money at this point in his career or a WS. He also said recently he see’s the young prospects that the Cubs have and that they may be very good in the next few years (which could happen as soon as next year or the year after).

Too much “if” — Samardzija and Scherzer serve as proof of that. I could MAYBE see the angle if the Cubs asked for (and received) a 24 hour window to negotiate a pre-trade extension.

In terms of how they performed this year, Jeff Samardzija had a better ERA for the Cubs than David Price had for the Rays. What you’re suggesting essentially rewinds the tape to the start of this season, which found the Cubs in last place in the division and wildly out of contention early enough that they traded 40% of their pitching staff nearly a full month before the deadline because hey, why not, it doesn’t matter.

Please note: I am NOT saying Samardzija is a better pitcher than Price. What I’m say is that the Cubs need multiple big changes before anything is going to matter, and dealing one of the biggest positives on our major league team isn’t going to get us to that point. As I pointed out in another comment, I would take my chances keeping Arrietta and looking to sign somebody like Price or Lester during subsequent offseasons. If we were closer to contending it might be a different story, but we’re just too far off right now to be trading big pieces, especially with no guarantee Price stays in Chicago beyond 2015.

It really does. They have the money to lock up Price. He also said recently it would be cool to win a world series with the Cubs and recognizes that the Cubs have the young talent to be a true contender very soon. If they only had to give up Russel and Arrieta (and maybe another minor piece) to get the chance to get Price and extend him, it makes perfect sense.

That is very true. I just am going off of the value I see in the players that were involved vs what I proposed. Arrieta has been really solid this year and Russel is supposed to be a stud SS. It really does boil down to how the club who is obtaining the players values said players.

Arrietta has been solid, and I dont see Theo dealing him. More likely spend the 100+ on a front of rotation starter this year to pair with him. Then take stock as the pitching prospect (which I think get under valued because of the bats in the system) develop. Go all in on Price as a FA in 2016

The $20m is key I think. The Rays tried to play it super cool but I suspect they absolutely HAD to trade him now or in the off-season. They just couldn’t afford him next year. Maybe other teams picked up on that? Or I dunno what happened. I’m sure they got what they could.

Russell, plus maybe Tommy Milone (fairly similar to Smyly, although slightly older and a lesser pitcher), and a mid tier prospect strikes me as a much better haul than what the Rays got here.

This seems about right, except that I’d add that Craig’s bad year does seem, from a distance, to be more than random. His bat seems to have slowed way down. Can’t pull anything inside anymore. Kelly is a ground ball guy who had a terrific year last year without seeming to have great stuff. This year has been more like what you’d expect from a 4-5 starter.

I could see a team like the Mariners placing a claim on Zobrist because I feel he would be a good outfield bat for them if they could work something out with the Rays because he hits lefties pretty well. I’m just not sure if he could make it to them.

I wouldn’t mind Zobrist as well but he will be claimed long before the M’s have a chance. I think the Red Sox still want to contend next year and they will claim Zobrist if given the chance.

They might but I don’t think they would be able to get an interdivision trade done, although they do have the pieces to pull it off and it they gave the Rays some pitching prospects they might be able to pull it off.

Ok well they will still claim him regardless as than the Rays will pull him back. Just block the Rays from trading him somewhere for some value. That way Zobrist won’t be traded till the offseason.

Zobrist would get claimed for sure. Hamels would be claimed by the Dodgers if the Yankees or the Red Sox didn’t claim him. If Lee pitches at least 1 or 2 games during the next few weeks and does well, someone will claim him.

But the question is who will claim them? I can see the Yankees or Mariners placing a claim on Zobrist, and the Giants/Dodgers/Cardinals placing a claim on Hamels or Lee, The giants might even place a claim on Rollins if he’s put on waivers and try to either use him or Crawford at Second (Although I’m not sure if either of them could handle second)

Waiver priority is given to the player’s current league first. It’s not “AL then NL” specifically — AL players are offered to AL teams first, NL players are offered to NL teams first.

Hopefully today will seal the fate of Jack Zduriencik in Seattle. Tigers end up getting Price from Rays for next to nothing, the M’s gain Austin Jackson, which straight up for Nick Franklin is good, but nothing was done to make an impact for this team or to address another starter for a playoff push. I absolutely hate the A’s, but wish Billy Beane was the M’s GM. He’s not afraid to pull the trigger on a big deal.

The M’s don’t need starting pitching, It would of simply been a luxury if they got somebody like Price. You also say nothing was done to impact the team but adding Jackson does quite a bit to improve their outfield situation which was one of their major problems. So Jack Z did address their biggest need. Although it’s not a flashy move like acquiring price it’s still a solid move that could help them in their playoff push.

Don’t forget though Ace that the Tigers didn’t need starting pitching either… but it doesn’t hurt to have the last 3 AL Cy Young winners in your playoff rotation when you are pushing for a World Series… There is need and then there is what makes you better, David Price makes every team in Baseball better.

I think the M’s have a legit shot at the second wild card, but then of course who doesn’t. They got Jackson who is very good at hitting lefties which is something they have failed to do this year. I believe that this could be a step in the right direction and that the M’s could come out and surprise everybody like the 2011 Diamondbacks did, or the 2013 Red Sox, or the 2012 Giants.

Realistically Jack Z hasn’t done too bad considering the team he inherited when he took over. It’s taken him a bit longer than you could’ve hoped, but he came from a scouting/development background, and he’s done an excellent job of building the M’s farm system into something that should continue to feed the major league team for years to come.

Would you have rather traded away Walker for a few months of Price? So that Price could join Felix in losing 3-0 and 2-0 games? Doesn’t matter if we had Price or not. We’re not getting past the A’s scoring one or two runs.

I’m saying the Rays ended up settling for a lot less than everyone thought it would take to get Price. The M’s should have been able to package something better than what the Rays ended up with even without trading Walker. As for Price, it’s more than just a few months, he is under contract next year also, so Tigers already positioned for a run next year also. Even adding Austin Jackson, which again straight up for Nick Franklin is a good move, but still not the impact offensive player the M’s needed. It’s terrible when your biggest offensive weapon is your 2nd year catcher. M’s need another Thumper in the lineup.

I would argue that Jack Z got the overall best bat he could acquire at the deadline. Teams did not want to move position players that could make an impact this season. For all the players that moved, the three best proven hitters were Yoenis Cespedes, Austin Jackson, and Allen Craig. Craig is having a terrible year and is a big risk and the A’s weren’t going to trade Cespedes intra-division and heighten the chances of facing King Felix in a one-game playoff. Jackson is an above average hitter and fielder and controllable for several seasons at a position of need for them (CF). Hard to acquire something like that.

As if Addison Russell was ever on the table for Price….while the rays look like they got less for price than many thought, Andrew Friedman has a proven track record as a GM of a small market team and bring successful. He took a guy that is uncontrolled thru 2015 and wasn’t going to resign anyways and turned it into a promising 25 year old controlled thru 2018, a 2B with potential and in a logjam in Seattle after getting Cano, controlled thru 2020 and an 18 year old SS prospect whose holding his own in a league where he is the youngest player and by all accounts is a good all around SS prospect jumping immediately to the rays #2 prospect on MLB.com. it’s all about filing every hole with decent controllable players instead of having 1 stud who you realistically can’t resign.

What do you mean as if Addison Russell was ever on the table for Price? You would rather have Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel over David Price? I don’t quite understand your logic… if Russell was on the table for the Cubs he was on the table for the Rays that is for sure. The thing is Friedman somehow wound up with spare parts for Price… Franklin had no position in Seattle, and Smyly has no spot in the rotation if Price comes in, so in a David Price trade he is expendable… Then Detroit sends Austin Jackson who is a .270 hitter with little power and maybe slightly above average speed to Seattle… and a shortstop prospect in Low A… Nobody gave up anything significant except the Rays… Bad trade for sure.

EDIT: Please keep in mind I’m not saying these guys will or won’t pan out, and that they won’t be successful I’m just saying you can get better pieces than that.

Yes and No… Samardzija came along with Hammel and their combined salary is 11 Million this year with Samardzija going to arbitration next year. Price makes 14 Million this year. Furthermore Billy Beane proceeded to pick up Jon Lester, although admittedly while moving out Cespedes but that is still taking on more money.. All indications are that Oakland ownership is willing to spend 3-5 Million. Price would probably earn something like 16-19 million next year through arbitration which is more than Samardzija will cost next year for the As… but its David Price, what owner wouldn’t bite that bullet… Worst case scenario they could flip him in the winter after trying a run at the World Series… so it definitely could be done, plus there is nothing to say that Tampa can’t take on a little salary in a Price Trade for a better return. Be it in retaining salary or in taking back a roster player.

Then you flip him in the Winter after your post season run… big deal you probably get a similar return to what you spent and you had David Price for a post season run… but the notion that Russell is somehow off the table for Price but on the table for Samardzija who is giving up homeruns twice as often in the AL as he was in the NL this year, and Jason Hammel who is not going to pitch in the rotation for the post season making him a bullpen arm….. C’mon man.

The price for Price is going to be less this off-season because he has 1 year of control whereas a team gets him now to help win a championship and another year of control they’re willing to pay more for that.

It seems to me Andrew Friedman made a rushed decision because he feared he would get lowballed in the winter, which is entirely possible because everyone knows the Rays need to get rid of David Price… But I can appreciate you saying they would need both Samardzija and Hammel, there is a certain appeal to getting two starters back, but Hammel was never pitching in the post season anyway, so wouldn’t you rather have David Price pitching for you instead of Samardzija in the post season, because I think you would agree it was beyond doubt that the As would make it to the post season this year when they made the Samardzija trade.

I didn’t say a lot of salary, we are talking 1-2 million or taking back a useful roster player that has a smaller salary, like how Boston took back Cespedes… That was their haul for Lester… They were willing to pay Price to play the entire year if they were in the hunt for the post season… so even though they would get some salary back in a roster players salary it would still be less than David Price’s salary… so they would still be shedding payroll and acquiring talent…. So yeah they would.

Rather than reply to the exact same comment again Jim Johnson… I will edit this one… Tampa won’t take on useless salary, but if they take back a player making 2-5 million and he is a good player that balances the salary, and if he is a good player, Tampa will want him as part of the return.. Teams often look at salary when making trades… one GM might propose something and the other might say, I’m taking on too much salary I need to change one of the pieces I’m giving up with another that has more salary to balance it out… and then negotiations really start…..

Price has a bigger price tag than Samardzija. There’s a value difference there for most clubs, especially the A’s. They aren’t going to get saddled with price 18+M,arbitration next year, so yes the A’s preferred Samardzija. I also have seen on this site, they only were willing to add Russell if they got Samardzija AND hammel. Not one or the other. Had p Price had more controlled time and less of an arbitration estimate for next year the return would’ve netted them Russell, but Russell was never on the table

The Tigers may very well win the ALCS. Yoenis Cespedes is a low average hitter though, I don’t think he was really that valuable .256 Average, .303 OBP and 17 Home Runs… I think the As will be better off with Lester than him in the post season… Hitters like that just don’t succeed when facing the best of the best in the post season…

Kk I didn’t look up the stats, but I was mostly referring to his lack of success in the world series. I should have been more clear. But upon looking up his stats, I have seen that he has only really been there twice… although one could argue twice is a lot for one career. The more concerning thing is that his ERA in the ALDS is 1.79, in the ALCS its 3.55 and in the WS its 7.20 which is a bad trend… The tigers aren’t playing for anything short of a World Series and the deeper Verlander goes the worse he gets… although the sample size is admittedly small. But what post season sample size isn’t.

I think you need to look up his stats, verlander allowed no runs in 15 innings against the As last year with 12.6 k/9. He also allowed 1 run in 8 ip against the red sox.

The As are fifth in the majors in homers and 15th in average, they rely on the long ball. The tigers did that in the past and now they are moving past that as it doesnt work in the playoffs.

I disagree, I think it is a foregone conclusion. We have beat the A’s every single time they have made the postseason since 06 due to our pitching. Their offense is not as good as last year and once again they will lose.

Look for Tigers to make another move before September to bolster the pen.

This feels like the Bartolo Colon to the Expos trade. Crippling for the Rays.

Just doesn’t make sense. How do you trade a year and a half of the third best starting pitcher in the world for this? This has to be about the money. They had to have overplayed their hand, then were forced to take basically the only offer. How do you not get one blue-chip prospect? I just don’t get it. This could be the nail that seals the coffin on the Rays for the next two, maybe three years. They needed that big starter. A sad day to be a Rays fan.

Every trade the Rays make is about the money. Hard to compete in a small market, let alone one where the fans refuse to show up.

I think there’s a silver lining for the Rays…they’re on a great run right now, without Matt Moore.

I understand your optimism…but I’m not buying it. You can dress up the pig…put lipstick on the pig…but in the end…it’s still a freakin’ pig.

I think this was two part trade; salary dump and getting a couple players they have liked a lot over the last couple years. I’m not arguing about the trade (even though I would not have traded him this season), I’m arguing the players they got back. I would have rather kept him through next season and got the compensatory first rounder instead of what they got.

I just hope we are ‘all’ wrong and the three players they got all surpass our expectations.

I’m a Red Sox fan, I hope we are all right about the 3 players they got! I’m just saying that this team has played great lately and I don’t think losing Price completely cripples them because they replace him with Matt Moore next year. Boston wishes they could replace Lester with a “Matt Moore” kind of guy but their only hope is to land Scherzer or Lester in FA.

Does this make up for the awful Doug Fister trade the Tigers made earlier this season?

Tigers got: Lambardozzi who got traded away for nothing, Krol for a ERA over 5 (which we call up Hardy that is 5 times as good, plus it looks like he got sent down), and Ray who is a typical low class lefty that is not a difference maker.

If the Tigers don’t trade Fister, then Smiley goes to bullpen and they don’t have to worry so much about the bullpen. Plus i am sure the lack of potential the Rays got will even out some day when they trade Zobrist or whoever.

I would say it absolutely does. Price is better than Fister and had less injury concerns. Plus moving Fister allowed them to “audition” Smyly for teams this season as a starter. I don’t think the Rays would have been as interested in him if they hadn’t gotten to see what Smyly could do at the major league level for half a season.

That three-team Tigers-Diamondbacks-Yankees trade is just the gift that keeps on giving for the Tigers. Tigers land Scherzer and Ajax in that deal, giving up only Edwin Jackson and Curtis Granderson. Tigers now land David Price for AJax, one other top prospect, and a lowball prospect. Love it. Meanwhile Curtis Granderson has been solid, but much more expensive the past few seasons and Edwin Jackson, is, well, Edwin Jackson.

Looks like this just lit a fire under Sanchez. Now if it does the same for Verlander, Tigers should a have a long post season…
