Cherington On Cespedes, Lester, Sandoval

By charliewilmoth | November 8, 2014 at 2:12pm CDT

Here’s the latest from Red Sox GM Ben Cherington, who answered questions today on MLB Network Radio (via WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford):

  • Many teams have asked the Red Sox about their outfielders, Cherington says. That includes Yoenis Cespedes, about whom there have been recent trade rumors. Cherington says the Red Sox will have open minds about trades, but that “there is no particular player that we’re looking to move, including Cespedes.”
  • Cherington says the Red Sox’ previous relationship with Jon Lester might make him easier as a potential free agent target this offseason, mostly because they won’t have to do the due diligence with Lester that they might with another big-ticket free agent. In any case, Cherington likes the team’s chances of upgrading the rotation this offseason, either in the free agent market (where Lester, James Shields, Max Scherzer and others are available) or in trades.
  • Cherington says the Red Sox are likely to speak with Pablo Sandoval’s agent Gustavo Vasquez, but adds, “[W]e’re going to talk to a lot of agents next week.” Cherington does note, however, that the fact that Sandoval is a good third baseman who can hit left-handed means there’s an “obvious link” between Sandoval and the Red Sox.

    Standard one liner from Cherington.

Even if they are looking to move Cespedes, hes hardly likely to come out and say “yep, we’re desperate to move Yoenis on, he just doesnt fit in here going forward”, and drive down the bargaining tools and likely package they might get for him is he?

Few weeks yet before anything major happens i would think.

Lester doesn’t even require a draft pick, but I just don’t see it happening 🙁

Lester should get the most action of the big three since he doesn’t require a draft pick, I have him going to the Cubs!

Same here, it just seems like a perfect fit. Hopefully, Scherzer goes to the Red Sox if the Cubs sign Lester. We need an ace and he is a better fit than Shields IMO, even with his higher price tag.

you guys have any realistic trade proposals for Hamels? 4 years plus option remaining on his contract, under 100mil, 30 years old…Pretty sure if he gets traded this off season its either to the Red Sox or Cubs.

Cubs have the most major league ready position player prospects and the Mets have the same in the pitching area. I could see the Sox trading with either of them although there’s the Theo thing going!

Hamels to Cubs for Addison, Lake, and Olt!

Think their needs to be a bit more value here. Sure, Russell is a top 10 prospect, but Hamels is a top 10 pitcher in the MLB. I don’t think this is fair proposition, I still think the Cubs would have to include another guy. Keep one of Lake or Olt, and add a guy like Hendricks and I think the Phillies would bite. Heck, they might bite with just Russell and Hendricks in the deal.

          2014 19th, 2013 18th, 2012 14th, 2011 15th, for starting pitching fWar. Top 20, and trending downward. Not a top 10.

fWAR for pitchers is pretty bad. It’s based on xFIP which is not about actual results. You can’t decide how much a player was worth to his team and not factor in what actually happened.

I guess so. I’m not much of an advanced stats guy so, I don’t even know what fWar is. I usually use BaseballReference because it’s more efficient for me, and I believe it to be accurate. According to BBR, Hamels had a War of 6.6 in 2014. So IMO, he is atleast one of the top 10 pitchers in the NL.

Ha! I remember when i was following Olt a few years back when he was coming up through the Rangers system…must be he was part of the Garza trade, I’m guessing? he hasnt gotten too many chances to prove himself in Chicago, has he?…more importantly, it doesn’t look like he will get too many more chances there with the infield depth, particularly Bryant

I think the Cardinals could be involved. They’ve said they’re willing to up payroll but I think they would much prefer Hamel’s contract to any of the free-agents. Of course if the Cubs decide they really want him, they can definitely put a prospect package together better than the Cardinals.

What is the value of JBJ?
Are there any signs that he can hit .250 in the MLB?

His elite defense is valuable, and while he was really (really) bad this year, the potential he showed all the way up through the minors is still there. The Sox would be selling low if they traded him, but he’s still got a decent amount of value.

Do not trade JBJ….absolutely robbed of Gold Glove this year. One of the best defensive players, EVER….Best CF this year and it was not even close

The only way I’d trade him to the Tigers would be for Castellanos. Both are complete opposites of themselves, and are what each team needs. The Red Sox need a 3rd basemen with offensive potential, and hopefully he will get better defensively. While the Tigers need a CF who can man that huge outfield, and hopefully can hit decently with good OBP. While I don’t necessarily see a match, as the Red Sox’ll probably want to go after a better 3rd basemen on the FA market, it’s certainly a fall-back option for both clubs, in which the Red Sox have many fall back options…

Respectfully, no….before Middlebrooks , Sox had Bill Mueller, Lowell and Youk…definitely not a position where I would want a defensive liability, especially considering that Left Field in Boston is usually reserved for defensive liabilities. JBJ should stay in Boston, like I said before he robs doubles, triples and Homers, not just base hits. That’s extremely valuable IMO. I would keep him as starting CF even if his offense never really picks up.

Well, he won’t be playing CF, RF, or LF to start the season. He’ll definately be in AAA I would think. His offence just isn’t good enough to suffice a roster spot right now, when we have so many OFs who are on the 25 man. Right now, the OF is gonna be composed of Castillo/Betts in CF, Betts/Castillo in RF, and Cespedes in LF, with Victorino/Nava/Craig on the bench. That is too many OFs to have on a bench. Obviously, I think the Red Sox get rid of two of Cespedes/Victorino/Nava/Craig, with Victorino being the first one traded IMO. JBJ mightn’t get up at all next season till September, when rosters expand. The only way he gets called up is if Betts struggles and gets demoted, but I predict he won’t. Betts just has a swing that’ll translate IMO. It’s very fluid and easy-looking, similar to Miguel Cabrera, just with a bit of a higher leg lift. Of course, I don’t think he’ll hit like Cabrera but, he could be the next best lead-off hitter in the game. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Juan Lagares was better. UZR/150 has Lagares at 25.3 and JBJ at 22.6.

I understand JBJ is great defensively, but he really cannot hit. It’s not worth GG defensive for a guy who hits .189 with like 2 homers. On the flip side with Juan Lagares, he’s just as good, if not better, defensively and can hit .280 with a high enough OBP to make his speed relevant on the basepaths, unlike JBJ.

That sounds like Cherington. “We will meet with Sandoval next week”. That’s not to aggresive and fits in with Cheringtons’ unwillingness to spend his bosses’ money.

Red Sox want pitching and dont really like cespedes so they can flip him for a solid 2.5 plus war and around 200 innings of work and then extend him a QO the following year so long as he is not a flop. And San Diego has an abundance of pitching and really really needs some offense(plus hes a decent fielder too) and can also extend him a QO the following year. Sounds like a win win to me.

No. Padres will want controllable talent for their pitching. Cespedes cannot be extended a QO

Red Sox getting ready to finish turning over their 2014 opening day roster by at least 50% by 2015 opening day. By the end of the season, 1/3 of those people will be gone.

Cespey may be part of the package for Hamels. I could see more of a blockbuster deal Cespey, Buchholz and possibly Nap or Victorino in exchange for Hamels, Howard and a top “A” prospect. The Sox do not want to part with Betts or Xander. Howard could platoon with Craig at 1 B and be the DH next season.
Hamels is the prize and the Phills would have a little more money to spend. I think a Sox/Phills trade could happen early in the off-season–maybe this week.
