Blue Jays Designate Todd Redmond For Assignment

By Mark Polishuk | April 16, 2015 at 1:45pm CDT

The Blue Jays have designated right-hander Todd Redmond for assignment, as per a team press release.  Infielder Ryan Goins has been recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Redmond had gotten off to a rough start in 2015, posting a 16.62 ERA in 4 1/3 innings of work, allowing five walks to four strikeouts in that brief stretch.  Originally claimed off waivers from the Orioles in March 2013, Redmond posted league-average numbers for Toronto as a fill-in starter in 2013 and then was a solid relief arm (3.24 ERA, 7.2 K/9, 2.22 K/BB rate) over 75 innings for the Jays last season.  He held right-handed batters to a .242/.287/.360 slash line last year, though lefty batters had a much heftier .834 OPS against Redmond.

As per the MLB Trade Rumors DFA Tracker, Redmond is one of three players currently in ’limbo,’ along with the Nationals’ Xavier Cedeno and the Yankees’ Matt Tracy.

He didn’t look good in Spring either although it’s still a small sample.

Or you know, for his whole career.

Yeah, a little surprised the Jays gave up on him so soon. I think this comes down more to having too many long arms and not enough high-leverage arms in the pen. Have to think Delabar or Barnes will eventually come up to take his place.

Yeah id think Delabar. But yeah we got hendriks and estrada both able to serve as long relief. Im guessing thats why.

Yeah, and Hendriks has looked really good out of the pen so far. I think that was a big factor.

His velocity is up quite a bit in the pen as well. Pretty sure he was touching 94 mph

He was expendable with Estrada and Hendriks in the bullpen, not to mention Chad Jenkins in AAA. I like the way the Jays are pulling the hook on guys early.

Not to mention the fact they’re not overly playing to guys W/O options.

It’s time they brought Goins back up. Insurance at 2nd and shortstop. First rate defence.

Guessing they need a backup for an ailing Reyes.

Can also spell at 2nd base as well with no drop in defence.

May surprise a few people. Seemed okay in spring and early at bats in Buffalo.

He’s done that in the past too. We know what he is at this point. A defensive specialist off the bench.

Nothing wrong with that. Plenty of offense there already

        • DAKINS

You never want a sure out in your lineup. He’s good for short periods of time, but he’s not a full time major leaguer.

Kinda surprised they didn’t wait until after tonight’s game. Sanchez might be off again.

Redmond pitched last night, so he probably wouldn’t have been used anyway. Gets someone in that can be used, even if it is on the bench side.

They already got 2 long-men in Estrada and Hendriks. Estrada hasn’t been used in quite awhile.

You forgot to include Daniel Corcino of the Reds and Ryan Dennick now of the Dodgers on the DFA tracker.

He’s another Shaun Marcum. He’ll clear waivers.
